He had to bowl as fast as he could in Rawalpindi. It's the slowest track in the Solar System. I've heard rumours that there's a slower one on Mars, but that's because there's no soil there. Or air. Or gravity. Or people. When he was finally able to bowl on normal pitches, he found he could achieve hyperspace just short of length.

Ponting looked clueless? Dude, you couldn't make any less sense, could you? Yes, Akhtar was at his peak of his powers back then and he was bowling at the fastest pitch in the world but you keep forgetting that he was bowling to the best batsman of fast bowling on the planet. Akhtar sure did hurry Ponting a couple of times in that spell but to say Ponting looked clueless will be doing him a huge disservice. The thing that made Ponting stand out from any other batsman was that he never took a backward step and thrived in a challenge. Ponting ended up playing a couple of swashbuckling pull shots off Akhtar that spoke volumes of the greatness of the man. This was fire against fire but in the end, it was Ponting who came out on top!

Akhtar was a gangster on the field, and I'm from his city Rawalpindi, he is popularly known as the RAWALPINDI EXPRESS. Such an exciting bowler to watch.

The 8 minute debate was a good one, though a little long. My take is that sometimes even the best of players aren't that good communicators and can't be coaches. In cricket also we have second or third tier players becoming coaches and they are successful, it's rare and lucky to have someone like JL

10:38 Well it's basically a Fast Bowler thing. They take such a long run up, raising body temperature & heart beats to end up with a shot being hit or a close call or anything short of a Wicket, that naturally annoys them a bit, so they tend to be quite aggressive just by nature & sledging becomes a part of it.
@farooqdar1932 жыл бұрын
JL told akhtar you will be tired in couple of overs and then I will be incharge. Akhtar hits JL on hand and makes fun of him(hurting hand gesture) when he balls the next ball. @WTBob20054 жыл бұрын
There is nothing better in cricket than a fast bowler bowling genuine pace, and the batsman not taking a backwards step at all. The crowds love it, and get right behind the bowler, chanting him in, and he lets it fly. And the batsman needs genuine courage to get in behind it to play it. It’s one the best aspects of cricket that just isn’t found in baseball. A pitcher can pitch inside, but he can’t deliberately aim at the body and intimidate the batter. Once is a walk, the second is probably an ejection. A good fast bowler can bowl 6 uncomfortable deliveries in a row - have a rest and bowl six more.

If you want to see the toughest batsman in cricket take a look at this battle between Steve Waugh and Curtly Ambrose. It was on a green seaming wicket and Ambrose was tearing Australia apart until Waugh came in and basically said I've had enough of this and won't back down. Justin Langer was a young 21 year old watching this in the change room and was late quoted as saying. "....watching this the hair was standing up on the back of my neck and I said you're crazy (Steve Waugh) but if you're willing to stand up to Ambrose in these conditions, I'll go to war with you". Watching thus is what made JL the tough batsman he was. You have to react to it you will love it. BTW Australia lost this test but went on to win the next with Steve Waugh getting 200 not out and it was the first time the West Indies were beaten at home for 30 years. Steve Waughs stand here was what set up the win in the next test because he let them know that we aren't backing down anymore. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bITQqKKaeJx4b80

Before JL became coach of Australia he was the coach of the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League. This is the Australian T20 domestic league which allows each team to play some overseas players. Whilst the other teams went for big name batsmen and bowlers, JL would go for lesser known players who met his standards of wanting to play for his team and would embrace the standard of team first and last and not the size of their paychecks. The Perth Scorchers are the most successful of all the teams in the competition under JL's coaching despite every year the experts discounting their chances.

It is so interesting and intriguing (I wouldn't use fascinating because the two are related is known) to learn about baseball and if the games are similar and different in the way that they may be cousins the nuances of playing and coaching and the mindset seems to be so related. I had written earlier that discussions are fun and I think one of the reasons is that it is becoming a fair exchange of both sides learning and comparing the two games so similar yet so different.

Test cricket is all about hanging in there as long as you can and score some runs. The strike rate does nt matter as you got lot of time to play unlike T20s or ODIs. JL was such a customer who is good in hanging around and not loosing your wicket against tough bowling. He was an accumulator of runs facing touch challenges. And not to forget consistent fast pace bowling from the Rawalpindi Express! He comes second in my favourite Pakistan bowler. First one is obviously the Sultan of Swing!

As long as the batsman offers a shot/stroke against a ball, the bowler has a chance of getting the wicket. Langer was an opening batsman for the Aussies and Shoaib a very fast swing bowler. So Shoaib's objective is to get a wicket while the shine of the ball gives him the advantage while Langer's objective is to hold on as long as he can and take the shine off the ball so that it will swing less as it will give more talented batsmen down the order like Ponting better odds Shoaib is frustrated that Langer is not offering shots to his good balls while Langer is trying to get the bowler off his rhythm by taunting him about how he can read that bouncer. All in all, this is what Test cricket is all about, 3d chess where the players are trying to take the mental upper hand.

This was 8 years and a shoulder reconstruction after his best. Shoabs was 161.7, a bit above. But the first ever test was done in 1975 by a University in W.A that scientifically measured Thommo at 161.00 kph during an afternoons spell in a test match against england. What are the odds that the only time he was measured happened to coincide with the fastest ball he ever bowled? Minuscule, this was just an average spell for the guy 160, his hottest he would have been 165 minimum.
