Ferrari 458 Italia - Buyers Guide

Hi, I have owned a 2013 458 Spider in Hong Kong since 2017. Luckily being a 2013 car it does not have the issues of the earlier cars. It's an amazing car and one you can use everyday. It is also very reliable. One downside, as with all direct injection engines, is the carbon bulit up in the inlet port and the inlet valves from the phenomenon of blow back at idling. This can easily be addressed by either cleaning the intake valves with walnut shell blasting or dry ice blasting. Of course the intake manifolds have to be removed to carryout this operation. I have recently had walnut shell blasting to clean the intake valves of the 458 and the engine does run better. It is something absolutely well worth doing especially for a 458, being the last NA mid-engined V8 Ferrari their value is going up.

I own both a Porsche 997 and a Ferrari 458. Porsche has lost a bit of its reliabilty and Ferrari has gained a lot. So I would call it equal. You can daily drive a Porsche as I did and you could do this as well with a Ferrari. Although my Ferrari is too precious to me to do so. The Porsche had some little issues over the years. Nothing big but sometimes a little this and that, like power leaking out of the battery which was hard to get to the bottom of it. I put 40,000 km on my Ferrari 458 in 4 years, often on the Autobahn here in Germany. In the Ferrari the onboard diagnose sometimes tells you bullshit and wants you to see your workshop. Switch off and start again often solves the problem. All in all both reliable cars.

I'm a big fan of the 458 and you mentioned the dash getting hot. In direct sunlight or eve on a cloudy day, I can imagine can get pretty hot in there. If you can leave the windows cracked, if that's not to much of a security risk and also, maybe white alcantara or some other leather that doesn't absorb much of the heat energy or infrared radiation. I appreciate your video on these issues with this type of vehicle!

Headliner was an issue on mine the mirror knob broke really easy and the ceramic brakes always made a noise other than that it was an awesome car 💥💥💥

For some reason I have to have the "Wheel Bearing " kit for my driver side. They thought it was Caliber was closing down of the brake pad. The Brake pad on driver side was worn out and the other side was perfect. So they thought it was not opening all the way. But the deeper they went they found 5 shims, one was Ferrari and others were not. It is the weekend so I don't know if that means someone had done something with the wheel for track or what. A bit confused. Looks like it will be about $5400. But I don't know if that is for the kit or includes labor. Other than that is has been problem free, like a camry. Just change the oil and drive. I always take it to the Dealership, expensive, but people like to know if they buy a car it has been looked after. Did you ever see bearings on one side needing work. There was never any noise that I could hear.

Did you buy from a "private seller"or from a Ferrari dealership? Was it a certified pre-owned?? If it's a certified pre-owned there should be no issues leaving the dealer... And for years... Don't know Ferraris re-edited m record n record for reliability even if bought new.

Things like this is why the Ferrari owners dont drive their cars that often. They store it in the garage and look at it for few years and sell them with low mileage. My heart was set on a ferrari(360) but my logic told me to get a 911. '14 c2s acquired it in '15 it now has 55,xxx miles with zero issues.

I would say the McLaren does, but it is more adjustable with the suspension settings. 458 is much better for a long-term daily, McLarens are 50/50 some are great and some are terrible. I would say overall the 458 is much more reliable long-term.

@@HBiAuto nah - I got a 488gtb last march instead - and its awesome !! I dont regret a thing - just glad I got rid of the F430 = what a money pit & seriously flawed transmission.

⁠f430 only issue was really the gearbox. There is the typical stuff engine mounts, valve cover leaks etc. the 488 have turbo issues too that are more of a headache honestly. None of these cars are perfect, you just need to find the one you love the most!

I love the car so much , that I want to go with my emotions. Thinking of the 2024 Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio same designer as the 458 with a 6 cylinder Ferrari engine. Working out to get it , I think 🤔 is a go. 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider retirement !!! Great times ..

A big issue that I have learned thus far in my research is to NOT purchase a 458 that is 2010, 11 or 12. IFFF I can get the funds I will only purchase a 2014, 15.
