The centre exhaust does not shoot flames because over 3000 rpm the outer two have valves on them that open so the centre 1 is redundant over this rev number. Thats why when you drive the car around town slowly its very quiet. I drove a hire 458 spyder for the weekend last weekend and over 3000 rpm you can here the outer two start working

I think it has to do with the way the 458 exhaust is set-up. I'm pretty sure the third pipe is mainly for aesthetic reasons(though It still works) while the two pipes on the outside are responsible for most of the gases exiting the car.

I'll never get why some guys want "LOIUDER" exhausts. Especially on cars like the 458/488 or any Lambo. They're "loud enough" bone stock. Do you get a prize if you have the loudest exhaust on the road or driving through a tunnel in Monaco? But, if some guy for some reason wants the "F1 sound"...fine. If that's his thing. Her thing. I think the Ferrari's pre-488 sounded great as is. Naturally aspirated. Not that he 488 doesn't still sound good. Just not as good as the 458. If they could put the 458 engine in a 488 body then they'd have something there. A closer to flawlessly designed Ferrari. Same with the 911's. A 2018 911 body with a 96 air-cooled flat 6 engine. One of my favourite 911's is the 1996 Turbo S.. Ferrari Speciale 458. (engine).
