I think that most people with a 488GTB have a daily car like a Range Rover or Porsche 911. The Ferrari is a weekend car as you've suggested whereas the 911 can be used daily. However, the Ferrari offers more thrills and looks way better.

Fast Er My '73 is heavily modified and still reliable. My '97 Turbo S has nearly 200k on the clock and never left me stranded. My '15 Turbo S has also been fantastic. I had a '11 Turbo S that was OK. But of course not nearly as bad as anything ever made in Italy. Unlike Ferrari Porsche takes care of recalls as soon as there is a problem. Unlike Ferrari that took years to admit that their 458 occasionally would burst into flames. I owned a 360...or as i knew it the money pit. It was beautiful garbage. I've lost track of how many times I've picked up or dropped off my former business partner at the Ferrari dealership (in my 911 of course) for a repair on his POS 458. This is his second 458 and both have been beautiful garbage. I see my mechanic once a year. I see his every couple of months. And each time I hear "If you can afford the car you can afford the repairs and maintenance".

Im American and Id rather have a 488 than a C7 Z06. You gotta think about it, a Corvette is worth a lot of money. Especially a Z06 which can be what around $80K-$90K. But a lot of people can acquire a Corvette with a lot of hard work and a good paying job. You dont have to be rich to get one basically. Now a Ferrari on the hand which costs $200K-$300K, you gotta be rich and even for most mid class people that would be too far outta reach or just out of the budget. You might be able to get an older Ferrari but a newer one would cost a lot plus all the expenses after buying it. I agree that the Z06 is a world class supercar for performance but if someone gave me the option between the two id take the 488. If it was my money and i was making a decent amount id get a Vette or a Viper. If was filthy rich id get them all haha!

@chele0898 жыл бұрын
It might not have the wow factor when you look at it. But after driving them back to back you will have your wow-factor handed to you by the Turbos speed.
@MNMaveRick8 жыл бұрын
Which turbo? They are both turbos, which means neither will ever sound as good as a normally aspirated engine and a Porsche 6 cylinder will never sound like a Ferrari, even the subdued turbo. They both perform great, so it comes down to wow factor and a Ferrari never has its wow factor handed to it, while the 911 continues to be the same stretched out Beatle it has always been.
@chele0898 жыл бұрын
Rick Pihl Well one of these cars is actually called 'Turbo' so it is obvious which car I'm reffering to. Besides that, the Porsche is faster than the Ferrari in every measurable instance. Objectively the Porsche is the better car. If you base your car buying decision soley on looks and sound you just buy to show off. If thats the case, the Ferrari will definatly fit you better. I'm not saying the Ferrari is slow, or even a bad car because it is simply not. But the Porsche is just faster.
@MNMaveRick8 жыл бұрын
To say the Porsche is somehow measurably faster is to count tenths of seconds that will never change the experience of the lighter feel of the Ferrari compared to the heavy feel of the 911. No real world test will favor either cars performance in any major way, it comes down to the driver in every case. Objectively, they are too close to call in performance and the difference is not enough to choose the ugly 911 over the Italian piece of art and yes, the sound makes all the difference in the world and the 911 sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I will say that the turbo has also ruined the Ferrari compared to the 458, but not nearly as much as how the turbo compromises the flat six.
@chele0898 жыл бұрын
Rick Pihl You're a little biased I think. The Porsche is not ugly but it doesn't try to be a beauty queen either. You're right, the Ferrari is pretty. But the Porsche follows one simple philosophy wich is form follows function. And if you think about it, that makes a lot of sense. Ever sat in a 911? The dropping hood in the front and the realtively big windows give such good visibility, especially on track. Also, Porsches all-wheel-drive system allows the 911 Turbo to reach up to its full potential come rain or shine. The Ferrari is a nice second car but the Porsche is a first car, one that one drives every day. You also gotta take into account that the Turbo is Porsches Grand Tourismo type 911, layed out for Autobahn comfort and sheer speed. If you want a raw car from Porsche, buy a GT3 (RS). And that one provides plenty of lovely sounds.

Reviewers call the Turbo S "..the everyday supercar". Which to me is an oxymoron. How can a supercar be driven everyday? :) Supercars are supposed to do one thing well...go FAST and handle with precision. Not to be comfortable on less than perfect roads. The Turbo S is a GT car that does most things well if not better than most. But it lacks the "experience & sex appeal" of the 488. I think a 1st time driver of the Turbo S would leave the Turbo S impressed and with a small grin. He would leave the 488 wanting to smoke a cigarette. :))) If you had to choose ONE car to own. If you could only choose ONE dream car to put on your bucket list. You had days to live...I think the clear choice would be the 488 GTB. :)

Porsche traditionally is among the most reliable brands...especially compared to other super cars.
@888mf47 жыл бұрын
Bit of an odd road test to have two journalists testing different cars. In addition you can't really compare a 911 Turbo S to a Ferrari 488. The Porsche has a rear engine layout and 4WD. I would compare the Ferrari to another mid engined supercar like the McLaren 650S or even the new 720S. The Porsche doesn't have a direct competitor which is why it's been so successful over the years but I would say an Audi R8 comes closer as it is also 4WD and German. The R8 is also roughly the same price once its loaded with options.
@tigerinsofia8 жыл бұрын
The 488 is a large step backwards from the 458...sorry but the 911 Turbo S is ahead in every aspect.
@Dgannt8 жыл бұрын
+tigerinsofia In what aspects? Design? drivers car? Drama? Excitement? Agility? Special? Sorry but most people pay all that money to get a sports car that thrills them, not one that is "practical", or to use as a "daily". And something that is special and makes them feel special when driving it. Not a car that looks like any other of the 10-12 models that most can't see the difference between them. And a modern sports car that has such a harsh ride in 2016? Sure it can be used daily. For 2 days before your back gives up.

@davidef.87648 жыл бұрын
+IIproductionsII of course u see more 911s, they make unlimited variants, start under 100k, various dealerships and production isn't capped like Ferrari. Point is although an amazing piece of engineering, it's not a Camry and if you really want to have fun behind the wheel, the Ferrari is the way to go. reliability and servicing is expensive on both
@davidef.87648 жыл бұрын
+IIproductionsII they aren't more reliable, they seem more reliable. older Ferraris had annoying service intervals while Porsches didn't but they've had their share of issues. You can match the sound and sense of occasion of a Ferrari. Porsche is good for a semi everyday sports cars.

Why do they always say for special occassions when it comes to the Ferrari? So its not an everyday car then? You buy a car to drive and love. Not just to take out every now and then so on that note Ferrari loses to every car out there and IS NOT the every day car! A real stupid mentality filters through the car world!
@durrantmiller88108 жыл бұрын
+sw1000xg Because most insurance companies will only cover a few thousand miles a year on cars like Ferrari. If you go over the limit they won't cover the costs of an accident
@ikarugaxx37496 жыл бұрын
You can use it everyday and run 20.000 kilometers a year with it. But do you even imagine what the running costs are? There's a class of people who can afford to buy such cars and use them moderately. Then if you are a multi - millionaire I agree with you, no reason to not use it all the time.
@aristosachaion_4 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you know this, but Ferraris have a reputation of catching fire or breaking down when you least expect it. That's why it's not an everyday car. You can drive the Turbo S forever and it'll never fail you.

+scomberscombrus no, the actual curb weight of the Ferrari is around 1600kg. Ferrari usually give out only the dry weight, without the sat nav, power seats etc, then assume you paid an extra 100k on carbon fiber options. In reality, these 2 cars weight is definitely within 100kg if not less.

Then the actual curb weight is 1585kg. now look that up on google, wiki, anywhere. I guess everyone else in the world just make up numbers. Ferrari is the most honest brand in the world. +W-James The classifications are pretty fluid, and there's no clear definition on what a "supercar" is price and performance wise. Top Gear Magazine preferred the 570S over a 911S when comparing it alongside an Audi R8 Plus V10. I can't imagine the GT's changes like cast iron brakes or nicer interiors would deserve reclassification.

The 488 doesn't sound that good. It's quieter and lower than the 458 and only makes one noise. Certainly no opera singer (a terrible cliché anyway)... Also, why has the UK motoring press collectively started quoting torque in Newton Metres (NM) instead of lb/ft? I'm sure they do it in mainland Europe or whatever, but having only heard lb/ft for the last ~15 years, I have no barometer for how much is a lot of NM, especially as it doesn't relate to horsepower as closely.
@johnjackson128 жыл бұрын
+Mikeado66 750nm equates to 553lb/ft, which is an insane amount of torque! For a rough calculation in your head you want to knock off around 25% of what the nm torque is. And i agree the 488 doesnt sound that great IMO. I know it will be massively faster than the 458 but speed isnt everything, sometimes its the drama and noise of how it gets there which counts

Right on bruh, it's firing order is like a 2xL4, so no sound quality, just brainless (loud) noise. But, being flatplane allows it to have twinscroll turbos and separate the exhaust pulses, lower lag etc. Such effort is expected from a know how monster as Ferrari.

Between 1980 and 2000 supercars gained 30% more power and nearly the same weight. In the last 15 years, they have gained a similar amount of power for no gain in weight. Many are now a fair bit lighter and are ridiculously fast.That Porsche is accelerating faster than gravity.
