Ferrari 499P LMH Testing at Imola ahead of the 2024 WEC Italian round!

Last November Ferrari AF Corse and BMW Team WRT made a two-days collective test at Imola Circuit with their Hypercar-class contenders ahead of the 2024 season, during which the Italian track will host a round of the FIA WEC (World Endurance Championship).
Ferrari was there with one of their 499P, a car that already showed its true potential last season, which will become three in 2024 with the addition of No. 83 driven by Robert Kubica, Robert Shwartzman and Ye Yifei. The crews of the other two cars will remain unchanged as for 2023: No. 50 will be driven by Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen while on the No. 51 there will be Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi.
The Ferrari 499P has been designed under the LMH (Le Mans Hypercar) rules, which consist in prototypes designed from the ground-up with optional hybrid power. Together with the LMDh (Le Mans Daytona h) cars, prototypes based on a shared structure with mandatory hybrid power, both will be raced for the overall victory in a single ''Hypercar'' class both at the Le Mans 24h and in the FIA WEC.
The 499P has semi-permanent all-wheel drive: in fact it's powered by a 2,992 cc, twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing around 670 hp on the rear wheels plus a bespoke, high performance 200kW (270 hp) electric motor on the fronts. As required by the regulation (but adjusted from race to race by the Balance of Performance), the maximum power is set to approx 680 hp/500 kW in total, so the on-board electronics manage the power level in all circumstances, using the hybrid "boost" starting from a regulated speed (which was set at 190 km/h for the 499P for the last part of the 2023 season).

I first went to Le Mans in 1979, long after Ferrari's heyday in Sportscar racing, and in all the years I went there, there was nothing as big as Ferrari's Prototype return in 2023, they raised its profile to a whole new level; if they never won it again it would still be huge, but winning it first time out has made it a must see event.

Actually Rally1 era is one of the worst for WRC: 2 and a half manufacturers involved, fragile cars, very few participants, Toyota dominates and M Sport is just there to make number this year.. Yeah they’re pretty fast, but costs a lot. If LMH/LMDh teach one thing, is that pure performance is not essential for a technical regulation, to be great.

@@kakahuete9656 Yeah the stealthy sound of the ferrari’s TT-V6 really does made the 296GT3 like a fish out of water, but the 499P on the other hand…the sounds fits perfectly with the spaceship-like prototype aesthetics. But still, so far it’s a competitive engine tho so props to them anyway.

Great Video Bozzy! 😁 The 499P is just a pure work of Italian art and just behind the pug, is easily the best looking Hypercar in the field! Do you think they can challenge the Toyota's again not only for Le Mans honours but the WEC title as well? I agree, its a shame ferrari went to a v6. It just doesnt sound good. It sounds better than the 296 I guess.. but this thing would sound so much better with a proper ferrari v8 or v12. I think I recall enzo ferrari saying a long time ago he would never give up the large 12 cyl engines, and that the heart of ferrari are the v12's, he even hated turbo's, he always wanted that raw screaming v12 sound in his top tier race cars. He'd be rolling in his grave if he could hear the vacuum cleaner sounding v6's they put in their race cars now..

Exactly the same from what I've heard in person. The car in this video should be the same as last year since the test was held in November just after the last round of the season. Maybe it's just Imola that has such a unique way of spreading noises due to trees and its ups and downs ;)
