@@bx16v That is one aspect. But turbo is worse for reliability, that's why. For V12 less strain on each piston, because the force is more distributed. Make a high capacity V12 and you have big pistons with less strain on each of them. As opposite, make a small engine, one piston, big power. That piston (and cylinder and other parts) is doing all work, it captures all punishment. But in the end what matters is of course how well the engine is made. Bugatti’s EB110 4 wheel drive and a heavy quad turbo V12 lead to drive train losses and thermal challenges. With both solutions being heavy on top of that. Obviously there is beauty in the technical achievement and the complexity, Especially back in the day. The recipe Jaguar went for with the group B derived turbo V6, RWD was, with regard to results, more promising and ultimately worth it.

The SS version was just better in every way even being lighter than the XJ220
@jimtaylor2943 жыл бұрын
^ Nope. The EB110 struggled to reach its recorded speed, even after Bugatti took the wing mirrors off. The XJ220 could reach 223mph with minimal fuss, and in 680hp XJ220S form top 230mph. Not bad for half the cylinders and turbo's :D . (and less than half the Turbo Lag) Plus: She humiliated the V12 Pagani Zonda *twice* in 1/4 mile drag races; due to having vastly more torque and groundforce. I think that's 3 to NIL in the XJ220's vs Italian competition sphere. (though not the first time that Jaguar produced a car that left an Italian car maker stumped for a response)

It’s manic. To start the car, you insert this key that looks like it folds in two, then you depress a squishy rubber button to the right of the wheel, while pushing in the brake and clutch pedals, which both feel lightly sprung under the feet and make a noticeable “click” sound once they reach the end of their travel. At idle, the car feels lumpy and sounds almost (from the cabin anyways) like a muscular American V8 idling. Once you give it some gas and ease out the surprisingly light clutch, it jutters forward (not so smoothly) and the wine of the gearbox as well as the change-in-pitch of the engine starts. The engine becomes surprisingly smooth, but not very torquey up until about 3600RPM or so, with the only hint at power being the huuuuge “ssshhhhh” sound of the turbos and the wastegate “pash” every time you upshift. Every upshift brings out the clicks of the shifter gate as well as the clicks of the pedals. Past 3600RPM the car becomes manic, and you hear more turbo sound than you do engine sound, and the shift from redline brings an immense “WAPASH” from behind you. The suspension is immensely stiff, but not jarringly so - it feels compliant. The thing you notice most is the sound of every tiny little rock and pebble being spat up by the wheels hitting the underside of the car, as the carbon fibre and the car having no sound-shielding really work in tandem with the engine, turbos, gearbox and little “snick snick” sounds of everything else to make the symphony of noises quite loud and visceral. If you experience it once (as I did - only once), it’ll remain an experience that you never forget, for as long as you live.

"and the engine from a V6 metro lol" but Metros don't have V6 engines... unless they are Group B rally cars. Let's try that again with a bit more honesty. "And the engine from a Group B rally car" Suddenly, everything makes sense, no one is confused.

The Brits love the Jag, but back then I don’t think we heard anything about it in Canada... it was always F40 vs 959.

In my mind the peak of the super car is the F1, such incredible engineering and it deserves a real head to head with the F40.

I like Freddie on top gear. You can tell he loves cars and that's what top gear was all about. You can keep the friendly banter because that's a bit too fake but Chris and Freddie just talking about 2 legendary motors is great tv

The F40 is just the most timeless and legendary car, I have seen a few at shows, close up, they still look like spaceships from the future, especially with the front and rear panels open, nothing else comes close for a sense of being special and sheer presence, you hear people say "There's an F40 over there" and you have to go look, virtually no other car can illicit this kind of reaction.

I'd still rather have the 959... much more car in every way.

I like Chris's quote from the excellent F40/50 comparison he did. While sampling the F40's power, he said.... ''What did they (the other manufactures) think when they released this thing? they must have thought, we might as well pack up and go home''

There’s NO WAY I’d choose the Jag over the F40
@Ureallydontknow3 жыл бұрын
huge empty engine bay. heavy car. broken promises. cancelled pre-orders. looks good though. it needs a modern twin turbo ford V6 swapped in but then the value would go down. the jag is not so good at tight corners and low speeds so it has a purpose as a big long car.

I used to live in Darwin and my father was a customs officer. When they did the Cannonball Run there (where they could go as fast as they could on the open roads), I remember seeing what was left of the F-40 after it had the fatal car crash that killed 4 people. I was a teenager at that time. I'll never forget it. My father also saw it as he was doing customs, checking it out of the country. Sad that both drivers (doctors) were killed, plus the 2 people doing the check point. That F-40 was a beast though. Man did it kick ass in the time trials.
