I do believe your ferrets may be used to rats already,but still the bodylanguage of the rat suggests it's in defensive mode. The ferrets don't seem to know how to handle the rat as a friend, even though they are taught to not kill them. The rat isn't really relaxed. I don't believe it really enjoys it. :(

As someone that has had both as pets, the ferrets are playing. If they weren't, the rat would be dead. HOWEVER, that rat is terrified. Its trying to get away from them and can't. The rat's body language is defensive throughout the entire video. If she went in the cage on her own, I can only assume she was trying to assert dominance and scare the ferrets out of her "territory." She was not playing or having fun. I think it's very telling, also, that there is no sound. A few times in this video the rat flails around and I would not be surprised if it was screaming.

I've had many rats before and that rat is trying to show its dominance over the ferrets because it feels threatened and cornered. I would not suggest letting them play inside of the cage where the rat can be so easily cornered, try letting them meet on a kitchen counter or somewhere open where the rat can run further and you are ready to grab the ferret by the scruff if it makes any false moves. That will allow you to slowly let them acclimate in a safer place that doesn't have bars that slow your grab for the ferret down, with those creatures , a second can be a life and death difference.

You're rat probably has an aggression problem and that's why it keeps going back for more. Doesn't mean it's ok to let them play. Way too dangerous. Your rat can be being bruised internally or even bleeding inside from the strong teeth and jaws of the ferrets. One bite I saw in particular was really hard. somewhere in the first minute or so. The ferret bit down through the hole into the rat's back. HARD. You can't or shouldn't take chances with your rat like that. We have to protect our pets when they act stupid. I had a rat with an aggression problem and he acted like a fool, lol. Loved him dearly, but dang, he didn't act very smart sometimes.

From the rat's body language (I've had several rats), it's not scared so much as... well, it's in 'dominance mode'. Saw this posture a lot with males, upright, paws out, pushing at the ferret as if to assert dominance. So, while not terrified or being abused, it's trying to assert itself against a creature twice as big as it, while the ferret thinks it's playing. Not exactly cruelty ut I also wouldn't do it myself.
@cazumirayne198210 жыл бұрын
While I don't think this rat was scared for it's life I think it would have been more reassuring if the video had sound as it's the only way we'd know for sure. Sound says a lot more than body language in this case. I'm a rat owner and rats aren't as innocent and victimised as you people think. A previous rat of mine used to hunt for mice and kill them if one of them was unfortunate enough to end up at their turf. If this rat felt threatened, it would attack and bite with no problem. It didn't. Don't be so quick to judge something you know nothing about. The owner said they had been raised together since birth. The rats are most likely used to rough play and more importantly it's being monitored. I'm sure if the rat made alarming screeches the owner would take it back out.
@COSGUK3 жыл бұрын
Ok read description, if the rat is doing on her own and has the ability to escape then that's fine. Just one thing though, at one point a ferret has it's jaws around the rat's throat. If they had bitten down you would be one rat short. Even though domestic ferrets have no experience killing things their prey drive is still very active and can kill other pets. Raised together or not. Just a suggestion. Try and make it so the rat doesn't enter the cage anymore.

Ok so I see this has been going back and forth for a while so here is my two cents. A cornered rat is not a happy rat. rats can only flatten themselves and squeeze through things when they are relaxed so it was quite possable he could not get back out again. this rat is fearcely holding his own against two ferrets who eat rats and other small animals in the wild. just because domesticated animals aren't focused at first doesent mean they won't decide to be. also i think ferrets are stinky dirty and I would have grabbed that rat back out of that cage so fast. but that's just me. we live in a society where when you buy an animal it's yours and you make the decision unless there's proof of ungoing crewlty. your rat looks to be in amazeing shape for the jumping around it does but again this is not something I'd let happen this was scary to watch I thought for sure that rat was a goner but he always managed to get back out of it.
@michaelsago16034 жыл бұрын
I don't care if the rat got into the cage by their own accord or if you put them there. It's your responsibility as an owner to protect them from dangerous scenarios. This is a VERY dangerous scenario, and your rat (and even your ferrets potentially) could've gotten VERY hurt. Doesn't matter if there was any bloodshed this time or not. There easily could've been. You don't let scenarios like this happen if you can prevent it. Period. Honestly, it's not the best idea to introduce rats to other animals in general, but it's especially bad to have them in a caged environment with a predator. Luckily (and it it luck, not what will always happen), your ferrets appeared to not be going in for the kill, BUT your rat was showing many signs of being stressed. You can't make the excuse that the rat could've gotten out, bc even if a rat can technically escape through a space, it is hard for them to do so, both physically and mentally, if they are stressed out this much. If you were in a room with a dangerous animal that could kill you, would you try and defend yourself, or slowly squeeze through a narrow passageway to get away, leaving yourself fully exposed to attack? I'm mainly typing this out as a teachable moment to anyone watching this video rather than trying to dogpile on this person specifically. Just, if you're watching this, PLEASE to not think that this is okay or let it happen.
@gracewatwood551611 жыл бұрын
Hey, rats are NOT nasty! As you can see in the title it says PET rats. Pet rats are actually a lot cleaner than ferrets and definitely smell a lot nicer, so don't say things about a domesticated animal when you've obviously had no experience with them.
@chloecapray12 жыл бұрын
I hope you know that's REALLY dangerous, for your ferret and your rat. They are not playing, ferrets lke to toy and chase around their prey before they kill them, just like cats. The two of them ou can see cornering the rat and trying to catch it. You can look up videos of people who raw feed to their ferrets and the ferrets will easily kill a rat. Ferrets are carnivores and you're lucky your rat wasn't killed.
@FIFAMAX9 жыл бұрын
As many people have said, the ferret is playing, but the rat is scared, should be obvious from the body language of both tbh. If the ferret wanted to kill the rat then it would have clamped down on the rat, but eventually the rat will bite that ferret and it will end badly for both.
@fredherbert8945 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about ferrets' body language. They may be playing. But I do know rats. And this rat is not happy. Rats are ballsy if they haven't another way it'll try to fight. This rat's not happy and feels threatened. He goes between submitting, boxing stance and fleeing. The rat can't go through the bars if it can't relax its arched spine and flatten himself. If the rat went in on its own accord, that's because they're very curious, that's why I let my rats free roam in a safe room with their toys and a built "castle floor" while I'm observing and playing with them. Otherwise their curiosity can get them in trouble. The strength of those ferrets is obviously too overwhelming for the rat. The rat is not playing. Their body weight and way of playing can cause physical injuries to the rat that can be irreversible and lead to accidental death. In which case it's idiotic to pair them together. There are ferrets that do play more softly with smaller pet rodents. But these aren't it.
@joleneruelle71419 жыл бұрын
Okay...I DID read the description..so I DO know what's going on here. I just wanted to say that even though they have been raised together..I personally wouldn't let this happen. I know both species are highly intelligent and can defend themselves..but I don't think it's safe to allow the rat access to the ferret cage. Domesticated ferrets aren't as used to attacking and eating their own prey as wild ferrets..but they are strict carnivores and in the wild, have been known to take down birds, all rodents, and even Prarie dogs. They are predators. All your pets look in great condition, but just my opinion, ide be way to scared for my rat to let this happen. :/ (owner of 6 ferrets.)

Jesus Christ, that poor rat is terrified. Everything about its body language screams alarm, stress and defense, there is no play behaviour there. Maybe the ferrets are playing but that rat sure as hell isn't. I'm reasonably sure the only reason it didn't bite the ferrets is because it knew that would escalate the situation very quickly, and a rat doesn't stand a chance against 1 ferret let alone 2. Maybe it was not in danger of being physically hurt but it didn't know that. This shit is pretty much psychological torture.

This is funny and backwards to my experience, your ferrets are up on the rat, in my case my boys are all over the ferret, they really cant seem to understand why my lil Fursnake baby has fur on his tail LOL. The sweetest thing was my Fursnake has become so imprinted to my rat Tetra he starts fussing if Tetra isn't around him for long periods of time and as soon as Tet is loose he will run over to him and start licking him then start playing with him. I have had a lot of backlash about having both animals in the same house let alone letting them all run free together, we have a guineapig, 4 rats, a cat, a chihuahua, and our latest edition my dear sweet lil fursnake (Noodle). I think people severely underestimate the ability rats have to accept other animals into their own packs, let alone how to handle most other animals. The moment Noodle gets slightly to rambunctious, Tetra just as if Noodle where a rat will hip bump him then pin him down and force groom him till Noodle settles, then start play wrestling with him on his terms. Everyday I see my rats training my lil fursnake. I do think mixing the two can be very dangerous, but I think if you have very good trust worthy rats, who are accustomed to being around other animals, bringing a Ferret into their home can work, I don't know that I'd trust doing that the other way around.

I've read the description and a lot of the comments, and I just want to say that I actually do not think this video is cruel. When I first started watching the video, I thought this was extremely cruel. Then I read the description and kept watching the video... I can't attest to normal rat behavior (I've had pet ferrets but not rats), but I can at least say without a doubt that those ferrets are only playing. If these ferrets actually wanted to hurt the rat, this video would have only lasted 30 seconds. And while I am okay with you letting the rat in here on his own accord (with close supervision), I do think you should have let him out a bit sooner. As the video progressed, it did seem as if he was starting to want to leave the cage more and more. I don't think the rat was ever TOO distressed, but I think that 5 minutes of this was more than enough time for them to play/hang out in close proximity (13:48+ is excessively long for an animal to keep it's guard up)

Why on earth would you even do this? First of all, that cage doesn't look big enough for all 3 of them. Second, that rat doesn't have anywhere to run if the ferrets chase it. Third, there is only one rat in there and it is EXTREMELY cruel to keep such a social animal on it's own. Yes, it's with ferrets, but that's definitely not the same. Fourth, ferrets were literally bred to hunt RATS, and other small animals, so not a great idea to stick them in a confined space together. And 5th, housing those 2 species together is going to be very stressful for both of them. Please listen to the comments and stop trying to make yourself feel better by telling yourself that it's fine, because it's not. LISTEN TO THE COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know rats well but I have a good knowledge of ferrets and a ferret who put himselft on the back is an act of submission. Also, ferrets have a jaw 2 times stronger than cats then if they did want to hurt that rat they would have. The ferret is the domesticated form of the polecat, a ferrets does not exist in the wilderness. They don't have the same hunter instinct as the polecat have. This is pretty much the same difference as between the dog and the wolf. I only see curiosity there nothing more.

I'm not sure about ferrets' body language. They can be playing.

That ferret is trying to kill the rat... I know that ferrets are obligate carnivores and eat mice and the wild, and rats aren't much different. The ferret could get hurt from being bit by the rat, and vice versa.

My sister has a little maltese mix that will try to go up to huge dogs and try to start a fight even with two of them. Just because it does that doesn't mean you should let it. I heard of someone who had a mouse escape and go right into the rat cage and they woke up with one less mouse. They don't always know what's best for them.

Why the fuck do people say "your ferret could die you know" no it can not by a rat a ferret would rip it apart
@christopherfrawley25605 жыл бұрын
Ferrets play hard, and have developed defenses that other animals do not have. I could go on and on about the difference between the two animals but you where lucky the ferrets where just messing around. Over time they will get carried away and kill your rat if they haven't already. Your rat dosen't have a scruff and they will snap its neck sooner or later.

My ferret used to play with my pet hamster and they never had any problems. Some ferrets are just friendlier.

ferrets are very efficient killers if they wanted to kill that rat, they would have been dead in the first couple minutes and there would be blood.

Cruel irresponsible unaware person. Best to let them live seperately. It actually looks like the persons intention is for a live feeding session.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/havbpIOkjJh2mNk. Notice the difference of the rat's body language. The one of the link above is playing. The one of this video is not. The ferret of the link above is only one ferret. And it's being gentle knowing the rat is smaller.
