Cheers James, just got my Ferrex bandsaw on the latest round of Aldi Special Buys. It was a bit of a faff to set up, but following your guide to blade tracking and bearing alignment made it a lot easier. You can definitely tell this thing is cheap - paint in the threaded holes for the vacuum port needed to be tapped out, table isn't very flat and needs a fair bit of adjustment, extension table guides weren't in line with one another and prevented the table from sliding, lower plastic blade guard was badly fitted and rubbed on the blade, and the wheels struggle to tension thicker blades. That said, it's solidly built even if the attention to detail isn't quite there. After messing with it for half a day, it's happily resawing 25 metres of 100mm thick timber with a new SabreCut blade from TuffSaws, so I'm pretty happy with it. Great video, much appreciated!

10:48 The lower bearings can be adjusted before you put the table on. That should make it a bit easier.

My wife works at Aldi, and she’s always bringing me home discounted tools, grinders for a Fiver, packs of flap discs a quid, cordless drill a tenner, cordless mower for £20 etc, etc. I really can’t fault Workzone/Ferrex tools as the price they are for the quality is spot on. Great vid bud. I’ve just bought the evolution RAGE 5S table saw after watching your review. It’s a real step up from my Aldi £79 quid one.

You lucky bugger! That's some great deals you have mentioned. Personally I prefer the ferrex range to the workzone I think it's a step up in quality. The rage 5s is a fantastic tablesaw, the wing extensions I find really useful, recently changed the blade on mine and tuned everything up, still works and cuts brilliant

@@JamesManCave yep, the Ferrex seems a bit more well thought out, I’m trying to find out what the cut outs in each side are for, the large slot under the blade holder(I’m guessing the fence) and the odd shaped slot under the push stick holder?? Cheers.

Hi James. Just unboxed mine... got rid of the blade immediately as I'd heard elsewhere it's blade was pants (I think Peter Millard) and I have spent the past hour trying to get all those f**king bearing wheels a papers width off the blade. It seems impossible?? I rarely read instructions - where's the fun in that? - but it does say to tilt the table before opening the bottom door... just so you don't dink your paintwork! This was a super useful vid - thank you - I hope I get mine to behave like yours... I can barely slide the table extension on! I will file it tomorrow.

Another good review. I’ve had the 8” saw for 3 or 4 years. Cheap as chips and it feels like it in every respect but for all that it’s still going strong and with an upgraded blade it does everything I need it to do so I’d recommend it to anyone. This 10” saw looks like a step up though so if mine ever packed in I’d be looking for one of these when Aldi has them in.

The Snodgrass method is for saws with crowned tyres - these are flat so the tension should be equal across it, so teeth don’t need to be in the middle, the blade would be better centred on the tyre.

Got one myself and must say I am very impressed. Took a bit of focus to get it set up right. The only downside from my perspective is that the base was bent badly on one corner, in production by the look of it, as the paint is untouched. Checked all the angles and cutting square and cleanly. Put a 18mm ply base under it to compensate, and its working well.

Got mine a couple of days ago and it has a big bend in the base too. First thought was that the courier had dropped it, but I think you might be right about it happening before or during production as the weld line on the base to frame joint is banana shaped. Decided to send mine back, which is a bit of a shame as it seems decent for the money and I expect they will be out of stock by the time they come to send out a replacement.

Just bought this model on the strength of your review, and I've now come back to your video to set it up, as the Aldi instructions are dreadful and incredibly confusing to follow. I bought the Sheppach badged version, before I saw this review. I got over the first hurdle. 2 out of 5 people seem to have had their purchase damaged in transport. The fence is excellent, I’ll give it that. And that’s where it ends. The table needed some bending to get the two halves, either side of the gap, level. It’s done. Thanks for the heads up on the Snodgrass method. Invaluable. But won’t fix a cheap bandsaw, sadly. I have tried everything, but the blade moves significantly in both planes. The backwards forwards movement leads to the sideways movement, so only one problem really. Either the top wheel is wonky in some way causing it to track badly, or the blade is not made to a high tolerance. It will cut, but I’ve got a rough, and wavy finish. Do I send it back. Have I got time to get a quality blade and try that before my 30 days are up? Decisions decisions. I could use the side bearings to keep the blade straight, but you’re not supposed to are you? Nearly forgot. That lever for the tilt, a faff to put on, and having to take the table off again to get better access to the lower bearings, it’s now barely working. Could find a wheel. The final straw is the upper guide unit... there is so much play in it, that when you reposition it, you have to check where the back bearing is, and hold the unit while you tighten the knob. There goes convenience. Looks like you’ve got a good’n there. I’m not going to work a bandsaw hard, but I do need accurate and clean cuts, or my future plans are out the window. I didn’t expect much for the money, so I shouldn’t be surprised with the quality of the components. Bearings that barely turned because they’d left off a washer. Lower side bearings with two washers which put the bearings too far forward on the blade, even with the carrier unit set as far back as possible. Not thinking of selling yours are you.😃
@JamesManCave
@JamesManCave 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, when you said about the movement of the blade I was thinking it might be a poor unaligned weld on the blade, so was gonna suggest getting a new one. But with all the others you have mentioned it may be worth sending it back and asking for a replacement. My table was straight and level out of the box, I think had it of not been, I would have sent it back then. Hope you get it sorted
@tabriff3832
@tabriff3832 4 жыл бұрын
Just having my third look at it. The wheels themselves seem perfectly round, but if you watch the rubber tread you can see it is not. Might not be a consistent thickness or crudely glued on. What I an seeing on the top wheel is the rubber is not wide enough to fill the track and there is not a consistent gap to either side. I think that is throwing the tracking off, moving the blade forwards and backwards and because it is a crowned wheel the blade moves side to side because the circumference of the wheel is in effect changing. Pity, it has some string points and maybe I could fix the poor bits (also mitre guide sloppy in track). I can see the blade moving about coming off the bottom wheel as well. Anyway, thanks for your reply, I think it’s going back. Not sure where to go from here. Seems like a lottery under £300. Many seem to share the same frame and main parts as well. Cheers and enjoy your bandsaw. PS will check blade on a flat surface, though I have tried both blades they give you.

Hi, My Ferrex bandsaw arrived today- and what a nice piece of kit- well made and with a 550watt motor and the option of two speeds. It was virtually set up to exact needs, and your video was a big help, in making the whole process a bit easier. Only one minor problem- the front vacuum connector holes had been tapped and then painted so I had to run a 6mm tap through to ease the threads- otherwise perfect and all for £149.99 delivered as they refunded the £9.95 because of the shit delivery company who were 5 days late.

Great review and setup James! I couldn’t get the stock blade to cut that well, but swapping it out for a 1/2” tuffsaw blade made a big difference. Are you getting much vibration from it? Mine shakes about like a washing machine on full spin - doesn’t affect the cut, but makes it uncomfortable to use! 🤷‍♂️👍👍

Hey Peter, thanks. I was a bit concerned about the blade before I set it up as the weld on the join didn't look very good, but doesn't seem to affect the cut at all. I've also bought a 1/2" Dakin Flathers blade to swap out for the stock blade. I'm not getting much if any vibration from it, doesn't move on the bench whilst using it, but I know what you mean as I had that type of vibration on the little parkside bandsaw I bought. This is the 3rd Ferrex machine I've bought, and so far all seem pretty good value for money. 👍

@@JamesManCave Interesting, thanks! Yes, the vibration was bad enough I almost returned it, but it was fully sold out by then, so decided to stick with it and I’ll see if I can sort it out later on - might get a video out of it! 😂 Yes, the Ferrex branding seems to have marked a shift in Aldi’s buying; previously they seemed to be lately re-badged Scheppach, with Scheppach handling customer service, returns and warranty claims. The Ferrex stuff I have is all marked as ‘made for Aldi in China’ so I guess they’re buying direct, albeit likely from the same factories as other ‘manufacturers’ 🤷‍♂️👍👍

Nice one James. This newer model looks far better built and powerful than the previous Aldi model that I have (its the old workzone model). My old one is still going good, but then again, I use it only like once in a month or so for my kind of hobby stuff. The only upgrade done was to get a couple of different TPI blades from tuffsaws website. Regarding Dust extraction, mine is spot on with just a shop vac attached to the port. Very few dust on the lower wheel area.

Hi mate, yea I have the parkside Lidl version of the older type bandsaw. I liked that one, apart from the rip fence and the height of cut. This one has a much higher depth of cut which will suit my needs better, as for the dust collection, it has 2 ports on the machine, a normal size port, and a 4 inch port. So to really see how good it is I'm going to have to get one of those metal bin type dust extractor's 🤔🤪

Hi Phil, thanks. The max depth of cut on this bandsaw is 130mm, on my smaller Parkside one its 80mm, so quite a bit of difference.

Is the table self-aligning or did you have to set it up yourself? If you set the table up please show how you did it.
@JamesManCave
@JamesManCave 3 жыл бұрын
The table adjust with the lever on the back of the table, when you release it you can tilt the table to get it level, then there is a adjustable stop under the table so you can keep it level

Question, I've got one also and am quite impressed. Have to say it's my first one so nothing to compare to. Anyhow, does it run smoothly? Mine the whole thing had a bit of a wobble that I can't get rid of like a wheel or something isn't true! Thinking on giving the warranty number s call. Great video anyway!
@JamesManCave
@JamesManCave 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Peter Millard over at the 10minute workshop had the same issue, can't say I've experienced it. If it is something like the wheel not true deffo ring the warranty line. Peter solved his vibration issue by putting rubber feet in each of the corners, may be worth a try? Or try clamping the base down

@JamesManCave

Hi Jim, as of yet I haven't changed the blade on it. I do have 2 blades here for it from Mr bandsaw, a wider rip cut blade and a think detail blade. So once I give them a try I can update you then. But I really do recommend this saw from the use I've had out of it so far

I have a recordpower bandsaw, a big unit from probably the 90s and I actually sold it to buy one of these.. The recordpower is built like a tank, but it was more trouble than not with it.. Blades hard to source for it, no mater how many times I tried to balance the wheels, I could not get rid of the wobble, Such a shame because its a saw that would easily last a lifetime, but just not accurate enough for the small work I do with my buisness.. Fence was trash on it also.. I picked one of these up under the original scheppach name for a bargain, it was missing the mitre fence and the base was twisted a bit, I slap of a hammer bent it back into shape, I have a far better mitre fence with my table saw anyways so noting lost..

Thanks James' Man Cave for this set up, I started to use it to setup....then ...... everything stopped !!!. Upon trying to initially tension the blade the top knob turned about 4 then the blade TWANGED OFF the upper wheel !!, tried it several more times and did the same thing. Took to bits and noted the top square ended nut thread (cheap rubbish) had stripped threads after 1 cm down, luckily the 'barrel' which the handle turns threads was still intact. Local DIY shop had hardened steel bolt and all was good. Looking forward to good service from now on ;-), Thanks for the guide setup excellent. Bought new Tuffsaw blade as recommended: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWeYe6N4j9SUZtU who bought me to your setup ;-)
