Hi again. I changed the blade even though it was to the same spec and set it up from scratch. Everythig released and moved as far from the blade as possible. Did the whole set up again even setting the teeth gullet in the centre of the top wheel. Ran it for a minute as instructed and then tried it, What a difference Now it cuts with NO run off. At least there is no disernalbe run off. This both with the fence in place and free hand. This way may well help others to get the set up as good as it can be. Thanks again for your video and input. Cheers.

Susan, this has helped me realise some steps that I missed when realigning my Scheppach bandsaw!! She's old and blimey hard work... And never knew the trick to flip the blade for teeth direction!! Good call!!! I shall retry with mine in the morning after seeing this as it will not cut straight at the moment; currently cutting to the left a lot :/

Bought an Aldi Workzone HBS20, which is essentially the same bandsaw but re-branded for £79.99 in May 2017. Excellent little machine, but I snapped the blade when it jammed the other week. Got two new 1400 mm by 1/4" blades from Machine Mart for £10.20 each (inc VAT) in Aug 17 (for similar Einhell bandsaw). Did same as you, unpacked and found they were inside out, but easily sorted. Happened to "Google" Scheppach HBS20 bandsaw blade changing and led me to this video on KZbin...very helpful, changed first time, no problem...thanks!

Hi, I purchased this band saw a few weeks ago to cut tube cane for bagpipe reed manufacture and it worked fine for a few weeks however the bottom belt keeps coming off after a few seconds running , I've done all the set as per your video and used the adjustment you did to get the blade in the centre of the wheels but no luck. BTW your video was great for setting it up, the instructions that came in the box were useless so thanks for that! Hoping you could give some advice. Thanks.

First, tension on a bandsaw. I have a bandsaw (Makita) much like yours. I adjust the tension by ear. It should make a "ping" sound and not a "clank." When the bandsaw is not in use, let off the tension. Second, clearance on all the guides (and thrust bearings) is best adjusted with a feeler gauge, usually sold at automotive parts stores. Lacking that, use a bank note on the guides. Third, the solid guides are at best unsatisfactory. Phenolic guides are much better if you can find them in the UK. Makita uses ball bearings which are fine. Lacking these, wax the blade with hard wax; a candle held to the blade when it is running will do the job. It will cut better and the blade will last longer. Waxing helps anything that cuts. When I have a long ripping cut, I try to remember to wax!
@jimbo26297 жыл бұрын
A bandsaw is mainly for freehand cutting. The fence is usually problematical. If you don't have a circular saw then you have to plane or sand after your cut. The blade will wander more with the grain. You need a 4 or 6 tpi (teeth per inch) skip tooth blade for least wandering. For a finer finish more teeth and a wide blade and a slow feed. Once you have cut a curve the blade will always wander one way. Keep one for straight cuts and one for curves. Set up the bottom guides carefully as they are a pain to adjust. If the tension is too high the blade will break and the bearings will wear out. Adjust the top wheel to get the track in the middle of the top wheel. On a cheap saw the bottom wheel tracking may be off centre and not adjustable. If the wood scorches the blade is blunt or you are feeding too fast. MOST important, never have a finger in line with the blade. ALWAYS either side with each hand. Especially when cutting close to your hand. You can use some sort of push stick. Never ever cross your forearm in front of the blade. I have no connection with "Fine Woodworking " but it has useful tips on use and safety. That's what I read. Blades often need flipping before fitting. No shame in not knowing that if it's not in the instructions. I hope this is helpful. It's just the way I have done things for a very long time, not necessarily the right way. Never switch on with the covers open. Tie your dangling hair back if you don't want to be scalped. No loose sleeves. Always watch the blade cutting. I can't think of anything else.

I bought it recently and I had to put a washer on the bottom wheel so that it was level with the top wheel. Because the saw blade was very protruding from the bottom wheel. I have shaped the washer because it has a rectangular part in a hole with a diameter of 14mm. It has been better, with the saw more stuck inside. The fixing screw has the left-hand thread - Reverse
@herebutnotthere34536 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I have to do that also. Look like the machine model received "updates-down", as mine have four door locks (2 on each door) and the same protruding problem and so much more difficulties than her to set up the blade in a working way. Fact is I bought on Amazon and exchange the first. So i seen the exact same difficulties on each one, side to side. Have also "finishing and planing" the wheels and tires, while spinning, with a dremel...

Hi Susan, excellent video. Just a few add ons having just gone through the assembly process...the blade Teath should extend slightly forward of the side bearings...otherwise neither teeth or bearings will last long :-) the other (as I think pointed out by another commentor) is that the drift is really only a problem if you use a fence,,, as you obviously need the blade and fence parallel. ..but if it's significantly off, you need to reset the table position which you should be able to do with the nuts holding the table to the incline mechanism...hopefully you only need to do this once at set up after changing the blade or taking the table off for any other reason.... excellent video though. Justcwish I'd seen it before assembling my saw! :-)

You can use a piece of paper jammed between the blade and the back stop to achieve the half mill clearance. Of cause you can use a feeler gauge too AND keeping the feeler gauge/paper jammed against the blade until you tighten the lock nut you won't find that the guide moves onto or away from the blade.

Adjustment is similar to a running machine belt, balancing the two pulleys / rollers. When I used to use the old bandsaws in the factory many many years ago to cut wood for outside moulds and small strips when making a classical guitar body it was beneficial to drop the top guide down to the thickness of the wood to stop the blade wondering about it should give more accurate cut Line.??

Yes, you should always bring the top guide down to just above the work. I've probably been a little slack in that respect

Do you mean it slips off the upper wheel? It should just be a matter of adjusting the upper wheel with the screw at the back.

It's a 1400mm x 1/4" 6tpi blade. I don't know the make - I bought it at the same time as the bandsaw from the sales guy at a tool show. It's a big improvement, but some of that may be that it's better adjusted now.

@SusanGardener8 жыл бұрын
I think it's very good value. I had some problems with the fence slipping, but maybe I can glue some sandpaper to the fence clips to stop them slipping. It's smaller than many bandsaws, so you need to be aware of the size of work you need it for. Once set up correctly it cuts well.

Thanks for advice and sorry for my not perfect english

+violinerpl you have to align the wheels using the adjustment screw on the rear at the centre of the upper wheel. Rotate the wheels by hand and adjust the screw until the blade is riding in the centre of the wheel.

How thick material can you actually saw with this type of bandsaw ? i know its all about how much pressure you put on the material when sawing, but i mean how thick is it possible before the motor starts to say: HEY.. i can't handle this thick material, please choose something thinner..
@SusanGardener8 жыл бұрын
That's a very good question. I will know more in the coming months and will post back when I've tried various woods. It 'feels' like this new blade could handle 50mm hardwood but I think the thickest I've tried so far is about 30mm of oak which was easy. I'll be trying a thick chunk of sycamore soon.
@HearGear8 жыл бұрын
I was just watching you making a bridge for a guitar, i think that what mostly Pine wood so maybe not easy to tell about the harder woods like rosewood, mahogany and maybe even ebony. i am a electric guitar builder and need something to use to rough shaping the body before routing the contour of the body, a electric guitar body is about 40-42mm at the most, and in my caste mostly Mahogany. So i am thinking if one of those bandsaw would be good for that. Of course i will use it for other things as well... i think that the motor in your bandsaw is 300 watts.. does it feels like the motor can handle alot more or maybe not alot more than you already have been sawing with it ?
@SusanGardener8 жыл бұрын
+HearGear I remember getting a lump of rosewood/pine stuck in the blade guide and it stopped the motor, but maybe a jam like that would stop a higher power motor anyway. My feeling is that you could cut a hardwood guitar body without an issue, but I was warned when I bought the saw that I'd need an upgraded blade, which is what I was fitting in this video.
@HearGear8 жыл бұрын
Yes, those stock blades are mostly crap anyway so i really think that your blade upgrade was a very good thing to do. And yes, i think if something get stuck at the blade and make a jam i think any motor would stop.

@Susan Thanks for the review. I think bandsaws and routers are what God used to make the world. Well, that and a scraper. @HearGear Thanks for asking: that's exactly the question I wanted to ask. I have a chance at one of these for 80€: I think I'll take it.

HI I just bought one of this model and after assmbling it I found that the run off was quite a problem. I was using a 6 mm wide blade (1/4 in) with 6 TPI. Using it freehand I could follow a ling fairly well, allowing for run off, but when following the fence for a straight cut it always ran off to the right, looking at it from the front until it was struggling. I watched you in the other videop trying it out and it seemed to cut really straight. Was this so? and do you have any sugestions as to how to cure the run off I am having to deal with. any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
@SusanGardener8 жыл бұрын
If you set your fence to the drift angle then you can cut straight. You need to get it properly set up to minimise the drift angle. After I upgraded the blade the drift was almost zero, but that could simply be because it was properly adjusted
@SusanGardener8 жыл бұрын
And by setup I mean getting the blade centred on the wheel and getting the bearing and guides close to the blade

Can you put a 12mm resaw blade on this?
@saiancantin76677 жыл бұрын
Hey Susan, I was wondering which blade you installed in there. I remember you saying it was better adapted for hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, but I was wondering if the upgrade is worth it (resawing veneers, shaping braces, general guitar work). How much does this blade cost?
@SusanGardener7 жыл бұрын
+Saïan Cantin I'm not sure about the blade in the video, as I bought it with the bandsaw on advice from the salesman at a tool show, however my latest blade cost me £14 inc postage from nlstools.co.uk. It is absolutely worth it. I broke a blade during the recent bridge plate stock video of my sg1 build and had to go back to the original blade - it was awful - I couldn't cut against the fence and the angle I had to hold the stock at to get a straight cut was very big. The replacement blade by contrast cut with very little drift. It's never going to be perfect as it's a 6mm blade so is very dependent on the blade guides, which are not very good, but the improvement you get with a new blade is fantastic.
@saiancantin76677 жыл бұрын
thanks!

Thats weird, here in germany about every bandsaw blade retailer ive seen can make some custom that cost about 10-5 euros + shipping. There are two stores that might have them in stock in my town. As soon as I have time I will go and have a look. But i've already seen some online with 12mm width with 4-7 tpi, which I think would be brilliant for resawing veneers.
