Tagliavini was a very elegant tenor. A lesson on how to sing for new young tenors.

Bullshit , if you sing like that nowadays you will be out of job!
@sugarbist7 ай бұрын
@@connormacleod2023 Dear Conner, you may right, but we'll never find out. There's no one around that has the technique to sing like Tagliavini. I recently heard a Ballo in Maschera from the Met with 48 year old tenor Charles Castronovo. His vocal line is all shot up. Chopping phrasing and unintentional different colors of voice. His high notes were not well focused, but guess what? The Met audience still showed their gratitude. Back in the 1950s or 60s there's a good chance that Castronovo would be a singing waiter in an Italian restaurant or singing operatic performances at local theaters. 59 year old Roberto Alagna is being promoted by the Met to sing Calaf and Otello. and I'm Frank Sinatra. Enjoy

@@sugarbist Еxactly Castronovo can do same falsetto voice and same pianissimi , the difference is that he overdarken ' s the voice in order to appear more masculin than he actually is. Castronovo is a descent singer in his repertoire and a great charmer . If he was at the time of Tagliavini the ladies would have waited for him not for Tagliavini simply he is not a handsome man.
@sugarbist7 ай бұрын
@@connormacleod2023Funny though, that not so handsome man was successful in chasing the ladies, but I do doubt the ladies chased him. My father saw him live and claimed his voice carried very well in the theater. I had dinner will him and a group of up and coming singers at the ''Tiro A Segno Club on MacDougal Street in NYC, it had to be in the late 1980s. He did not sing that night, but had a pleasant conversation with my father and other family members at the dinner. I just said hello and listened, but my dad reminded him of a time he was outside the Rome Opera House to see Gigli in Ballo and how Tagliavini at that time imitated how Gigli would sing a certain phrases in an aria. Tagliavini laughed and said he often did that when going to see Gigli sing. Tenor voices like fingerprints have that individual quality, but Tagliavini often sounded like Gigli as perhaps early Carreras had some inflections of Di Stefano and to a less extent, perhaps early Pavarotti with Bjorling. Never the less it's disappointing when A tenor like Castronovo at age 48 or 49 gives a sub par performance of an opera he's not suited for. I remember Salvatore Licitera, may he rest in peace, was a pretty decent tenor, singing roles like Ballo, Cavalleria, Fanciulla Tosca etc, then he sang 9 performances of Forza at the Met in 2006 of which I heard one on a Saturday Matinee radio broadcast. I felt bad for the guy, because he was overwhelmed and sounded awful. He was simply over parted for the role of Don Alvaro and having Debra Voight as the soprano didn't help him much. But guess what? It didn't stop the enthusiastic Met fans from applauding exuberantly. I think, at least in the tenor category, things look very gloomy. There are some interviews here on YT with Corelli and Stefan Zucker you may be interested in. Enjoy
@connormacleod20237 ай бұрын
@@sugarbist Yeah , that' s a holy truth. It was well known Castronovo is not suitable for the Ballo even before he tried it. Licitra, peace on his soul, was a good voice but never payed attention and respected ,,the passagio '' register of his voice. Another truth is that every great tenor have his days off also. And it is truth that a lot of them are influenced by Gigli who managed somehow not to sing the hall aria in a full voice but to be convincing enough .

Of Course this is beautiful, but the greatest tenor of all time? Tagliavini was limited in repertoire. No Chenier, Turandot, Trovatore, I Pagliacci, Fanciulla, Forza, Carmen, Don Carlo, Gioconda, Manon L., Ernani, Aida, Luisa Miller, I Lombardi. Pavarotti sang many lyric roles and was '' NEVER'' a screamer. He had an excellent steady vocal line with impeccable diction.
