One thing I really like about this channel, is that the size of the knife on my laptop screen is about exactly the same size as the knife actually is. When I hold the same knife up to the screen, its the same. I think thats awesome, and great for comparisons.

The Stinger is probably my pick for knife under $100 for 2020. Great simplistic design with a very slicey blade made of great steel and is comfortable in hand. Great video once again MC!

Nitro-V is almost identical to 14C28N in composition and doesn't seem to have any performance advantages over it, but may have better marketing value. Both steels are sensitive to heat treatment, and budget knives running 14C28N soft may have tarnished its reputation a bit. To get the most out of these steels for EDC tasks takes high hardness and a very acute edge angle; Nitro-V or 14C28N sharpened to 12 degrees per side will keep up with S35VN at 20 on most tests of edge retention.

Had one for about three weeks now. Carrying it constantly. Size, ergos, design, build quality are all excellent. Slices like crazy. If this was on PB washers, and it had the QC Waypoint steels, I would say it was the perfect knife. For me, at least.

AEB-L is a FANTASTIC steel for kitchen knives. I have one and love it. It's super tough as long as they get the heat treat right, and the Rockwell hardness is at least 61. It's not very stainless though. But I love mine. I didn't even spend all that much money on it. Maybe $70 or so for a 7" Gyutou. The best part about it being super tough is that the makers can use thinner blade stock, which leads to laser beam cutting edges. But that makes sense, because AEB-L was developed to use in razor blades.

Don't recall where I picked it up but I thought stainless started at (around?) 13%. I thought I got my info crossed when you said 14% in another vid. I checked knife steel nerds while writing this and in a post/article about D2 it says stainless is fuzzy and given around 11-12% but D2 has that 11-12 range and is considered semi stainless. Then it goes into how temps affects high carbon and chromium %s affecting the end result but thats all out of my realm lol

Going by Cedric's rope cutting test Nitro V cut twice as many times as 154cm

I think he does a great job, and his content is a huge boon to the knife community. However, that wasn't anywhere near the same result that Larrin Thomas (professional metallurgist) got. I think that particular cut test on Cedric and Ada's channel might have been an anomaly. Scroll down to "edge retention" and "summary and conclusion". knifesteelnerds.com/2019/09/23/nitro-v-its-properties-and-how-to-heat-treat-it/ Edit* - this all comes down to proper heat treat. This is just one explanation as to why there's such a significant difference between the two results. This isn't my area of expertise, so all I can do is provide the information I've read.

You say the edge retention isn't the great aspect of NitroV, yet according to Cedrid & Ada's retention testing, it did better than S30V, S35VN, 154CM/CPM154, as well as D2. Of course it isn't going to be as good as the high end super steels, but it costs less than half the price of typical knives with those steels.

Nitro-V wouldn’t flex like a machete blade needs to, it would just shatter. It’s too hard and brittle. No one uses it in lengthier blades like that (that I have ever come across.)

For a blade that small a finger choil is totally unnecessary. It cuts down on the amount of useable cutting real estate. You can always choke up on any blade by grabbing it between your thumb and forefinger. Nice overview

Well if 154CM and S35VN are heat treated correctly, they'll outlast Nitro V by a long shot. Seems like you're comparing poorly heat treated examples of these steels with properly heat treated Nitro V

How about you two dust off your reading glasses and have a look at this article - knifesteelnerds.com/2019/09/23/nitro-v-its-properties-and-how-to-heat-treat-it/ It's especially satisfying to be right when more than one person says you're wrong. You can tell me all day that YOUR blade is special, and that performs better than this. If that's the case, make a video and prove it. Otherwise those are empty words. On paper AND with testing from knife steel nerds, this stuff performs exactly how I originally described it.
