FERRYBRIDGE COOLING TOWERS DEMOLITION

Watch these iconic towers fall with planned demolition explosions.
The video is a fitting tribute to the towers and although they are gone, this video will be there for future generations to watch. We hope you enjoy watching it.
Work began at the site in 1962 and was completed by 1968. On 1 November 1965, three of the cooling towers collapsed due to vibrations in 85 mph winds. Although the structures had been built to withstand higher wind speeds, the design only considered average wind speeds over one minute and neglected shorter gusts. Furthermore, the grouped shape of the cooling towers meant that westerly winds were funneled into the towers themselves, creating a vortex. Three out of the original eight cooling towers were destroyed and the remaining five were severely damaged. The towers were rebuilt and all eight cooling towers were strengthened to tolerate adverse weather conditions.
Commission of Ferrybridge C began in 1966: one unit was brought on line, feeding electricity into the National Grid, on 27 February 1966. Following the cooling tower accident, it was expected that the station would not be opened for some time after the scheduled date. However, it was possible to connect one of the remaining towers to the now complete Unit 1. The reconstruction of the destroyed towers began in April 1966. (extract from Wikipedia)

Nice video. I designed the strengthening of the towers after the collapse in 1965. I also went to the site to supervise the "Rehabilitation" works. I was at the blowdown of tower 6 in July and at the blowdown on 13th October. There are many versions of the reason for the collapse of 3 towers in November 1965. The real reason is that there wasn't sufficient reinforcement in the shells. The funnelling effect between the windward towers onto the leeward ones resulted in the leeward ones being subjected to a higher wind speed. My calculations showed that the reinforcement in a critical area of the shell would fail (reach yield stress) at a steady wind speed of 68mph. On the day of the collapse, the station anemometer was recording gusts of 72mph. My videos are on my KZbin channel tmfarnham.

I was the chain lad (the "apprentice" who holds the staff and the dumb end of the tape measure) on one of the 4 towers in the rear row of the 8 in summer 1964. I like to think it was the roundest one and the one that did not blow to pieces. "My" tower was within the 2" tolerance that was acceptable. One of the towers (no names no pack-drill) was visibly not round when viewed from the ground - the guilty are probably all dead by now! It was a 6 day a week job, I was armed with a big spanner and a template cut from a sheet of plywood called "a sweep". My "ememies" were the "Paddy" scaffolders, who were the best-paid on the job and came to work in a Bentley. There would be some sort of fuss about the way they had rigged the moulds and/or the positioning of the reinforcing bars inside them. Adjustments would be made and then I would have to start all over again. We were on a basic rate plus a bonus for achieving a circle of concrete pour into the 4' high mould every day plus danger money for every 10' over 50' up from the ground. The tower thinned down to only 5" so provided one could cope with the stress that was pretty good money for those pushing a barrow full of concrete around the tower from the hoist. ----- or making good the putlog holes in the concrete/painting the inside with tar/consolidating the pour with a vibrating poker/rigging the reinforcing with a roll of iron wire and the deft twist of a pair of cutters. As every day the 8 - 16' assembly of scaffold poles climbed up another 4' to squat on top of yesterday's tower. One day some negligent JCB driver dug up our water supply, so it was noon before any concrete could be made BUT we still got the ring filled before nightfall. Health and Safety? In a good month, nobody died on site. The nearest I came to such a serious accident involved my boss the engineer. He stood on top of the mould and jumped down the 4' to the lower of the two boardwalks. There was a crack like a pistol shot. He ended up kneeling on one leg across the missing board. To this day, I can still see the two halves of the broken board gracefully pirouetting down 100++ feet into the pond of water in the base of the tower. The qualifications for the job probably involved being able to bend a 6" nail with your bare hands - something I could not do. I can remember that a pint of good bitter was 1/10d and a pint of mild as little as 1/5d [£0.09 & £0.07 approx] though sadly I cannot remember the names, with the exception of the 15 year old tea boy, who saved me from being bottom of the pecking order.

@@Urbanlad-Yorkshire Not all "radiation" is the same. As write this cosmic rays are probably shooting through my body in the form of sub atomic particles. Obviously a nanoparticle of plutonium is potentially far more dangerous. It is thought that tiny particles of blue and brown asbestos have the power to snip our DNA but there again young healthy DNA has the ability to repair itself. At he age of 75 my DNA is probably in a state of fraying at its ends. So far I have managed to dodge the virus - perhaps my ffp3 mask has helped.
