What about areas that are 90% bare due to lack of water. If I apply a heavy top dressing there, will the st. Augustine grow and spread into the center of the bare area from the nearby grass? Each bare area is approximately 35 sq. ft. Or is it a lost cause and should I just plan on laying sod in those bare areas. If I go the sod route, should I place a thin layer of black cow down first since it’s very sandy?

Bigger bare areas like that need sod. Thin areas you can apply soil. Yes, apply soil underneath the sod especially if sandy!! I have some top dressing videos on my channel.

It's definitely late in the year for that. That should have been early March. If you have not fertilizered the lawn yet this year, I would do a low to middle rate. If you have just use micronutrients.

I use organic fert in the summer, Texas heat +100 degree days can’t handle synthetics.

I live in Texas City, tx...next to Galveston on the gulf coast. St augustine is predominantly the grass here. What about using liquid iron (simple Lawn Solutions, etc) and milorganite about every 6 weeks during the heat of the summer... maybe June - August? Thanks

After two months of fertilization by lawn guy. A lot of the st augustine mixed in has very bright florestant yellow now. What is that? I had it before and iron had no effect on it.

That's called chlorosis. It can be from a lack of iron or stress to the turf. If the lawn is being regularly fertilizered, I find that to be from stress or damage to the roots most of the time.

@@bettercallchadd He said it was from when he sprayed weed control. I have never seen it this bad. He did get rid of just about every weed so thats a positive.I did have him aerate the lawn today since the sod is so old wanted to try and get neutrients in there. I just hired this company 2 months ago, prior I did all the lawn care but it got beyond my control.

Granular iron doesn’t work. Foliar applications work.

Granuler does work. Maybe a cheap brand won't be as effective, but I have used effective granular iron.
