I decided to put my blackberry patch right into the ground. I actually had a hog in the same location and moved him around 4-5 months ago. He was there a little longer than a year. I’m not going to fertilize them this season. I started with 5 plants of 3 different varieties. I am going to mulch them pretty heavily though. I want to do 2 more rows of 5. I want at least 2-3 different varieties in those rows.

I enjoy your in container blackberry related videos, thanks for sharing this tip! We have black cap raspberry canes in 17 gallon buckets and I'm looking to get some marion berry starts. We've been using Espoma holly tone on our canes with good results, and found Jobes holly food on clearance to use, but like another commenter mentioned, a hit of a strong balanced chemical fertilizer at the right time can really kick fruit production into high gear.

That's crazy. I just fertilized my blackberries *today* Is there a drone or something? LOL! I just threw a shovel full of chicken house floor around each of mine. It's got wood shavings and dried out chicken manure mixed together that's been sitting for a while. It's getting watered in good and hard right now. I'm also trying something new with potatoes, wood chips and chicken manure that may really be a back saver. Details to come if it works.

First growing season for my Prime Ark Freedom blackberries. Seeing some good growth now. We just put up the trellis this weekend like yours. Praying this storm tonite doesn’t knock all the blooms off. One problem I’m seeing is NO BEES! Where are the bumble bees? Is it still too cold here in Texas? I have 12 Prime arks and 6 of the Ouchita that were sent by mistake. They don’t even compare to the growth I’m seeing with the Prime Ark. I’m so excited. Thanks for all your tips. Following your suggestions. Getting more tubs from Leon soon. Yay!

You said you covered the top layer with wood chip mulch. Was that from mesquite chips? I have heard that mesquite roots have phytotoxins that prevent other plants from growing around them. Question is, do those phytotoxins extend into the trunk, and how long do they stay toxic after the tree is dead and made into wood chips? What are your thoughts.
@BIGALTX

We are not far enough west into Texas to have any mesquite trees. So I’m sure there were no mesquite chips in all these loads. Mainly oak, pine… Etc..

With this continued string of warm weather days in East Texas, I'm having a hard time holding off on planting my vegetable seedlings. Have you picked a date for putting out tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc? Five of the new primacanes, in wicking tubs, are showing leaves. The sixth blackberry looks like it will remain a dead stick. This year, I'll have a row of blackberries with one funny looking tub of a vegetable - peppers perhaps. Your hat reminded me of Greg Key's "Mr Hoss" old hat from his videos. Continuing to enjoy and learn from your posts.

I'm in north east Texas. After years of gambling and planting early ( some paid off ) I wait until after Easter to plant. When you win some and lose some with a whole garden it really hurts on the lose some.. I do raspberries in wicking tubs also and some of mine dead canes ones are just barely starting to come back from the roots. I have some that are growing crazy.. you would think they all look the same but they don't..

Good morning, my blackberries are looking good this year since adopting your way of fertilizing. Thanks for the videos... Another quick question. Have you ever had a problem with snakes hiding in your vines? My brother said he constantly had snakes in his vines that were planted in the ground. So much (2-3 times a week) that he dug them up because he was scared of the wife or kids getting a snake bite. Always rattle snakes waiting on rodents and birds I assume, maybe they blackberries also.

No. That cane will produce a few berries in the spring. Then, many more canes will come up from the ground. Leave it alone. Watch some of my videos on pruning, because you will need to prune in the early summer. You should have a lot of canes growing by then.

In what sense do you like the HOSS 20-20-20 fertilizer over Miracle-Gro? I've been using Miracle-Gro for years with fantastic results. And I see that the HOSS costs a lot more. Close to double.
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX Жыл бұрын
Not sure about the cost difference, but there is a difference in the NPK rating. Miracle grow, unless you’re getting the special tomato blend, has too much nitrogen in it in my opinion. Flowering plants need more of the second number which is phosphorus.

How do you address the salt build up in the containers when using synthetics?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 2 жыл бұрын
It IS a concern. Not sure of the salt content of the 20-20-20 I'm hoping (since the containers are open on top) that I get enough rain and irrigation to "rinse" much of the salts out. BUT... I'm considering organic for next year... OR... The "Pelleted Gypsum Soil Conditioner" at HOSS TOOLS is supposed to reduce the salts in the soil. I'm going to give that a try. Check it out here... under "Fertilizers": bit.ly/homesteadadvisor Good question :)

Following your videos closely. I want to try blackberries, but am having no success with even raspberries (I bought Fall-Gold yellow raspberries several times over the last year, but all but one plant has died!) I am living in Cyprus (moved from Singapore 1.5 yes ago, so first time living anywhere but the tropics,) where we have had first a summer with records heats and then the coldest winter in 15 years. I have tried as much as I can think of; moving them into different areas with varying amounts of heat/light, less wind (I’m on the coast so the salty sea air cuts through our house on all sides,) different soils, but I’ve come up empty, after all this time. As I said, one is still alive, but it is suffering, not just failing to thrive.

Properly termed a molasses tub in cow country, they are often used spiked with minerals/salt for the cattle such that they are healthier and have a touch of sugar to keep their gut bacteria happy during the winter time. A happy cow is a happy cow. They tend to pile up around ranches that feed their cows these molasses tubs and they often will be glad to be rid of them for nothing if you ask first. Otherwise they might be available at a nursery that has a connection to several of these ranchers. The sellers of mineral tubs claim they will send a truck to recover the empty ones, but after two decades and nobody shows up, you kinda have to come to the conclusion that they don't care about the end game on these things at all.

Would you do water soluble triple 14 the same as a 13? I also have fish fertilizer and kelp available I can use, just not sure whether that would be right for them. And for new plants you are just putting in and getting established, could you direct me to which video in your playlist you went over that on, or is that on your video about the self-wicking tubs? I couldn’t seem to find it again to review before I get my new babies in their tubs 😆😅
