" FESTIVAL " 67 DOC NEWPORT JOAN BAEZ DONOVAN DYLAN CASH PPM

Murray Lerner’s 1967 documentary on the Newport Folk Festival entitled Festival!. It’s a remarkable look at the mid-60s and the particular counter-culture that the festival attracted, as well as, of course, the legendary musicians who took part in it: Son House, Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, Donovan and Bob Dylan (where his infamous “electric” set took place in 1965, which Lerner’s cameras captured)
On December 19, MAD screened Festival! with Sui and Murray’s son, Noah, in attendance. Noah is a director in his own right, having made numerous short subject and feature-length films, the bulk of which are documentaries themselves.

It’s funny that Joan Baez was Dylan’s girlfriend around 65 but she said he was completely stoned all the time which caused her to split from him. She was completely anti drugs. She later lived in an anti war commune and she flushed a huge bag of grass down the toilet and they all stood around her and said Joan tell us slowly what did you do with the drugs?

The young people attending the festivals in the video were the grandparents and great grandparents of young people today. Some people's grandparents would have been conceived at the festival. As part of that generation it is great to see us when we were all young and beautiful. And the music was great then too.
