Friedman was living in his own bubble and kept rejecting every fact Kishore threw at him. That's the typical arrogance of the American elites.

Friedman is an absolute nobody and cannot be considered an intellectual... The fact that he genuinely thinks China is governed by a "social credit system" is hilarious and confirms his cluelessness

Reading from the comments, sounds like Thomas is true to the new York times rhetoric. He's still stuck on the same mindset that kishore has said on Western mindset

Impressive presentation by Mr. Friedman. This conversation should be carried by NPR and CNN platforms. Language barrier can be overcome with tech, Google and Baidu, Microsoft the like could collaborate and build apps to help people everywhere communicate.

I think we should note Kishore’s final remark before jumping to conclusion that Tom F is ignorant and arrogant. “Very few people in the world can speak for two hours without making the audience fall asleep”. I find this conversation to be insightful, balanced and thought provoking. He is evidently respectful when the need to push back arised; he would address Kishore by name whenever he wanted to make a key point. Two hours well spent thank you Tom, Kishore and LKY School.

Friedman's suggestion that the rest of the world would be out of their minds to let the Chinese dominate high tech and move up from middle income to high income status is childish. I'd like to ask: was the rest of the world out of their minds to let the Americans technologically dominate in the past century? Where's the international consensus on this, I'd like to see the white paper of entitlement. In any case, the Indians will give the Americans a run for their money in IT and telecom!
@watson70424 жыл бұрын
spot on! one point to add, the fact of China being able to capture the high end sector will give the rest of the world especially the underdeveloped world hope and confidence that they can do the same thing by routinely imitate China model.

He's also completely out of touch with the shift on geo-political weight left behind by US unilateral withdrawal from world leadership. In fact many countries do textile these days not China because China is shifting to a consumption industry and many other countries are benefitting from a secondary market beyond the US. If the US does not want to lead in certain fields, go with its own pace, China will step in with these traditionally neglected countries and provide them for cheaper and likely in very quick time better. Made in China, nothing wrong with high speed rail which Freidman was happy to compare in first slide. If they can trump 'Made in Americas' with Boeing right now, no reason why they cannot go upstream and build commercial aircraft with quality. Too many people including Freidman mired in red herrings to really see what is going on with the rest of the world. India has recently signed an understanding with China to develop deeper coorperation which suggest many third party countries the US assumes may fall on their side feel the US is now a bit of a spoiler and too unpredictable to be too close with. Whilst US is fixated by China, China and the rest of the world are moving ahead.

I did not realize how pompous and pedestrian Mr. Thomas Friedman is or can be. He knows so little and yet talks and speaks with pedestrian superfluity.

Even intellectuals like Mr. Friedman need time to get used to the fact that USA could be world No. 2 someday. Free Markets and democratic system won't likely to change that fact.

Its actually far more scary that Freidman carries these perceptions of China than Trump. No one put a gun to Big Corporate America's head to go into China. If you don't like the terms of the tech transfer don't do it. Let the Europeans steal the show. Everything is of course a US-China perspective for Friedman but Kishore should have reminded him of the larger picture. Amidst all the spoiling the US has clumsily attempted to make under both Obama and Trump administration to disrupt OBOR, more countries have signed on and more countries have found that CISCO has more back doors than Huawei (which has zero) One simple question. Freidman likes to call upon the Chinese to show good will and trust. Who trust the US? Paris Climate agreement unilateral withdrawal. Did not honour Iran Nuclear treaty. You can see even friends US has tried to entice onto its side have become cautious (Vietnam and India) On that note, the elephant in the room, is India has actually moved closer toward more cooperation with China in recent months which is a monumental geo-political shift not captured by ANY Western main stream media or otherwise. Why not? China also happens to be India's largest trading partner and they actually honour their agreements.

22:17 . he is correct, to be competitive in the future students and new workers today have to be prepared to be a life-long learner because their skills will be outdated after a decade or so. And it will even be outdated earlier in the future , so never asked your kids what they wanted to be when they grow since their skills will soon be outdated 23:00

American rhetoric of China is rife with accusations of IP theft and forced tech transfer. However, there's very little appreciation of the profits US corporates benefited from being in China {to the tune of hundreds of billions or trillions?) . It was a quid pro quo exchange. All foreign investments are attached with some form of tech transfer clause, no matter what country. Grow up and compete as you claim to be able to on the basis on your vaunted 'American exceptionalism and ingenuity'.

Mr Friedman, I have enjoyed and learn from this talk you shared. I was Very DISAPPOINTED with you Obvious BIAS in your political comment talk (1.5700 time line )about Representative Devin Nunes etc. I happen to know the representative and his work. I take offense to those comments especially when you did not back up with any facts. In addition...what is so wrong wanting to improve its citizen--- $$ 4 million jobs created since he was elected in other words more Americans are now employed than ever recorded before in our history. $$ New unemployment claims recently hit a 49-year low. $$ Median household income has hit highest level ever recorded. $$ African-American unemployment has recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded. $$ Hispanic-American unemployment is at the lowest rate ever recorded. $$ Asian-American unemployment recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded. $$ Almost 3.9 million Americans have been lifted off food stamps since the election. $$ Record number of regulations eliminated. This is a Real Killer for business and an Albatross. $$ United States is a net natural gas exporter for the first time since 1957. These and many more which I did not list....and you want us to go back with Obama and his policies which are Liberal and Repressive and make its citizen Dependent on Liberal policies with half truth and falsehood? In addition, I was about to buy your book but after listening to your comments and one particular comment made by a verified reader and I will paraphrase this reader's comments--Tom is a Reporter....I ( reader) worked for 4 decades in advances in computer science and technology...Tom has made factual errors that would not been toleraed if he were to work for G20...reader gave up on p71.where Tom misinterprets and experimental result and gets the speed of light wrong by a factor of 2/3...makes a erroneous statement about how fiber optics works. ( KEY--problem here is) Reader states: I don't read Tom Friedman for entertainment or distraction I read him to learn, and if I'm not sure that he's getting the facts right, how do I know that I am, in fact, learning anything? So, I pass on this book. I agree, I will PASS on this book! In addition, Dr Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow, Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore may I humbly suggest that this guest is NOT worth having as a speaker at NUS for those above reasons.

eric quek Lol when I saw who was the speaker I tell myself maybe I’ll read the comments first. Because I already made up my mind what kinda BS someone from NYT might churn out and after reading the comments here I’m glad I gave it the miss and waste my time on it. Btw, for me to read the comments I already gave him the benefit of doubts but I was right, based on the comments here. Thx.
