This event was part of the British Library's Beautiful Science events season 2014.
Festival of the Spoken Nerd: stand-up mathematician Matt Parker, geek songstress Helen Arney, and experiments maestro Steve Mould hosted an evening event exploring the laughs, graphs and gaffs of science. An outstanding set of guest geeks including citizen science gurus Erinma Ochu, Jonathan Swinton, and the BL's own data visualisation experts gave the audience an opportunity to get down and dirty with data in live experiments, and hear the backstory to the Beautiful Science exhibition.

If you count the Parker Square as an effect, Matt is right in the middle of that Venn diagram

The business with the arm swings meeting at the bottom is the reason why golf clubs are mostly the same length no matter how tall you are.

This is like taking thirty random words at a time from various parts of Shakespeare and stitching them together. This jumps from mid-skit to mid-skit with no rhyme or reason. FotSN is much more entertaining (and coherent) than you're making them seem here.

Convergent Hand Height - remarkable, unexpected: why?
@alcesmir
@alcesmir 5 жыл бұрын
Not that weird, just a consequence about how ratios work. Let's work under the assumptions that we have roughly the same body part ratios regardless of height. Specifically, assume that the ratios of height, height to the shoulder and arm length are independent of height. If that's the case we can think of the arcs of circles with centers at the shoulder height with arm length radius. I extracted some rough measurements from daVinci's Vitruvian Man (because why not) and plotted circles for heights ranging from 1.4 to 2 meters (0.05 meter increments): imgur.com/a/47aiNsh Pretty close considering I have no clue how correct the ratios in Vitruvian Man is, and changing the ratio slightly you can get configurations that are essentially spot on to the Matt's result.
