From what I understand Festool has updated the tool so drift isn’t an issue any longer but this is still seems handy.

It seems to me that you can get perfect repeatable results with the domino as it is. I don't understand why this is better?
@blacklabelcarpentry4 жыл бұрын
There have been several users that have encountered fence drift, which this attachment eliminates. This attachment also takes out any guess work when working with dimensional lumber, all you have to do is change the depth. Taking out guess work reduces the possibility for user error.

I had the same question; I haven't used my new 500 very much so I can't comment on the fence drift issue. The base plate furnished by Festool looks similar to this add on product. It might be useful if our presenter would compare the two plates and indicate how his is superior to Festool's

Having had the domino nearly as long as they became available i would definitely recommend the domino plate from senaca woodworking, i have seldom removed mine since i got it years ago, and fence drift can be a real problem one of few from festool beside the price s good video subscribed

I have the Domino and this plate. I’m still learning to be accurate with both. One problem I still contend with is making false cuts when starting the machine. As I push the lever to on I make a small plunge 😡. Do you start the machine off the work and then aline it?
@tsouder65 Жыл бұрын
pinch the switch on so you are not pushing down on the switch
@blacklabelcarpentry Жыл бұрын
I always start the machine, making sure the power button is fully pressed down, and then bring the domino to the work surface. Unlike a router, it is safe to turn on before bringing to the work surface, as long as you dont plunge until you’re ready
@johnmccracken6497 Жыл бұрын
or you can simply pull back on the domino with one hand while you push the power button forward with the other hand

I noticed you're using hardwood plywood...when I buy plywood it is never 3/4...it is actually 1/32 under 3/4... same for 1/2 inch. My question is whether the "3/4" setting is for material that is actually 3/4 inch.... I understand that you may not always need to have the domino exactly centered on the board thickness so long as you keep your reference surfaces the same...but sometimes you do need to center as close as possible on the board thickness. If my board is exactly 3/4 inch will the Domino Plate accomplish this? Thanks!
@blacklabelcarpentry Жыл бұрын
Israel, you are spot on with not needing the domino to be exactly centered and this plate will work with any thickness material, but of course the placement of the domino will only be 3/8” on center or 1/4” on center as it is for 1/2” and 3/4” material. I have found no issues using the plate on the slightly smaller thickness plywood as it’s not quite enough to make it structurally weaker. If your board is exactly 3/4”, the plate will work perfectly. They also make a plate for thicker material. I believe that plate is 7/8” and 1”

Getting here late but I saw this add on accessory about 10~12 years ago. What does it accomplish? I have had a Domino since 2008 and cut well in excess of 10,000 mortises with the 5MM cutter. Plus numerius sizes with the other 3 cutters. I have never ever wanted to hold the Domino upside down. IIRC you mentioned fence drift.... Do you mean slippint out of adjustment? There is a screw to tighten the lever for a tighter grip, I have never had to do that either.
@blacklabelcarpentry2 жыл бұрын
So the plate eliminates fence drift. I do understand the ability to tighten the fence, but every now and then it seems to not register perfectly (only out a touch that catches a fingernail), so the do I plate eliminates any possibility what so ever of drift. I have even used this plate trying to be quick and make an errorr, but the plate has such good surface coverage, its very stable. Using the domino upside down feels no different to me as i put my hand at the very back like a pool cue.
@11211lcb2 жыл бұрын
@@blacklabelcarpentry if you are more confident using the plate I have no issue. Fortunately I have not witnessed this situation. It seemed to me upside down would present an awkward step to operate the on/off switch, spinning the Domino around. I just realized that I will have had my Domino 15 years in May.
@blacklabelcarpentry2 жыл бұрын
@@11211lcb you do have to flip it over, but its never presented much of an issue for me. I do however need to realign my domino fence as I've noticed its about 0.35-0.50mm out of square. Not that im building submarines, and wood moves, but its always nice to be as precise as you can!

very informative video, i am drooling over this machine. i have a question, pardon me for my lack of knowledge. can domino make a through joint, so that the domino (biscuit) is visible on the face of the project? your reply will help me a lot. thanks

Thank you. Yes you can! the DF500 offers dominos up to 50mm in length. The DF700 offers domino lengths up to 140mm. I have seen a fw makers exposing the dominos and its quite a unique look! thanks for the great question

At the start of the video an overview would be nice. Why do I need this?
@blacklabelcarpentry2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Steve, i will take note of that. If you did need further explanation after the video, the Seneca plate is great for cabinet builders, or anyone working with 1/2”-3/4” material that want to achieve flush results. While the domino itself is a great tool, sometimes you can encounter a slight bit of fence drift, which the do I plate eliminates completely.
@stevestewart54962 жыл бұрын
@@blacklabelcarpentry What is fence drift and how does this eliminate it. can you provide an example . Thanks for the quick reply,
@blacklabelcarpentry2 жыл бұрын
@@stevestewart5496 fence drift in this case is the fence moving upwards as you apply downwards pressure. Now you should never apply that much pressure, but sometimes things come loose or need adjusting. You know you’ve encountered fence drift when you may have a slight difference in height when 2 pieces are joined together. It’s not usually much, but enough for you to notice if you run your nail over it. The domiplate eliminates this chance ever happening, even if you decide to rush through a project. Ive had great results when taking my time, but also doing a test when i tried to be fast and not pay as much attention, and i still had great results. Seneca woodworking have some videos on this attachment, and Ryan Murphy at US Tool & Fastener can also attest to the great results

But the domino has a built in plate. Looks like you use it backwards? Why not flit it over and use the plate at 90?
@blacklabelcarpentry3 жыл бұрын
yes it does, and while i have used it like that from time to time, the Seneca plate removes any chance of fence drift and allows me to reference 1/2" or 3/4" material exactly every time without having to think
