Festool Domino DF 500 Set // Unboxing & First Impressions - WOW!

In this video, I'll show you the most expensive tool I've ever purchase - the Festool Domino DF 500 Q-Set with box of assorted Domino tenons and additional cutters. This is a wild tool that has blown me away in the first few days I've owned it. Let's take a look!
NOTE: After using this for a few days, I highly recommend NOT placing the material you're cutting into on a flat surface as this can sometimes cause you to accidentally reference of the base, rather than the upper plate. It's best to clamp the workpiece on the surface of the table with it hanging slightly over the edge so that the table will not interfere in any way.

@@MasonWoodshop The dowelmax is well-made, very accurate and has a lower cost of entry, but the domino has a pretty decent speed advantage. If I ever get to the point of production speed being an efficiency bottleneck, the domino will be the first tool I buy. Have fun with it!

Be careful when doing dominos on a table like that. Depending on how thick the material and how you set your fence you might be referencing off the table instead of the top of the boards. The actual formula is that you'll have problems if "fenceSetting + 10 > materialThickness" (find the fence setting from the scale or dividing the integrated gauge value in half). The 10mm comes from the distance from the middle of the cutter to the bottom of the machine.

Yes!!! Thanks for noting this as this is exactly what I’ve encounter after making this video. Working off the table has solved all of these issues and the only time I’d work on the table is if the material is thick.

Definitely what he said. I cant speak to how all users go with this but certainly at my work, the guys who use their bench as the reference face have the most issue with misalignment. If I could give you or any new domino user one piece of advice, if you're working with std 16 and 18mm board, start off using the 5 x 30mm dominos with the corresponding 15mm plunge depth. Everyone, (and I do mean everyone!) plunges all the way through a seen face at some point. Especially if you don't have any more board left!!! Ask me how I know ha.

Oh and to go along with the alignment accuracy thing, have a look at the seneca woodworking Domiplate. I have two, the 12/18 takes care of the not having the in bulit 18mm stop and the Zero/12mm. I can't articulate the instruction of how to use it in here, it'll just be confusing, but have a look they're great. I use that when I'm putting in dividers of shelves. Whilst the TSO Bigfoot is very well make and good, I actually never use mine, I just pull the machines foot out to the highest setting and its fine for any cabinetry task IMO.

@@WhangaFish That's a great tip! I've been mostly playing around with 6mm and luckily I've only had one accidental plunge all the way through (luckily just on a test board).

@@WhangaFish The Seneca Domiplate has been on my radar the past week or so and I think I'll get one once a Canadian retailer has stock (oddly out of stock everywhere I've checked). I did just get the TSO BigFoot but haven't had much opportunity to play around with it yet - hopefully I'll get a bit of time this weekend.
