Larger Extension Tables
To start Festool upgraded their slide-out extension tables, making their footprint bigger and better stability. They also put the MiterFast finder at the rear of the tool. The MiterFast makes the transfer of inside and outside angles from the workpiece to the saw quick and easy without complex angle calculations.
Dust Collection - Locking Hose Connection
Festool plans to make this upgrade on all their dust ports moving forward. The new connection is effective at collecting dust and now allows the hose to lock in place and prevent accidental disconnects. The hose port accommodates 27mm inside diameter and 36 mm outside diameter.
Pro Tip - We found that the Kapex has the best dust extraction when you cut/shorten your hose length to 6 feet and use a 36mm Festool hose.
Electronic Brake
The 1,600-Watt motor in the Kapex utilizes direct drive for a more efficient transfer of energy to the blade. The motor also has a magnetic brake to reduce the time needed for the blade to spin down. The electric brake that will stop the blade with in 3-seconds. This brake has a magnet around the armature, there are no contact points, and will not wear down over time.
Rail Forward design
The Kapex features a rail forward design which increases precision and creates a compact footprint. With a rail-forward design, the Kpaex REB can be placed against a wall for all cutting tasks, maximizing the work space. The rails are 30 mm in diameter and wide apart. They were redesigned to further reduce deflection and head play, especially when tilted to a 45-degree bevel. The rail forward design has long been a favorite in the shop and in tight working locations, like up against a wall. It also assists when transporting or storing the saw.
Portability
The saw weighs (47 pounds) allowing the Kapex REB easy to move around the job site. The Kapex's head locks down making it compact and preventing head movement. A two-handle location keep the Kapex REB close to your center of gravity which allows for a safer way to carry the saw.
Counter Spring Balanced Bevel
When adjusting the bevel on the Kapex REB a counter spring balances the saw head. This keeps the saw head in position even when it is not locked in place. This makes dialing in a micro-bevel angle adjustment easier and more accurate.
Bevel Lock Knob
Since we’re talking about bevels, it’s hard to overlook the Kapex REB “Bevel Lock Knob.” The knob conveniently located on the top of the Kapex REB to control the bevel positive detents and to lock the bevel angle. The bevel knob has three settings: positive detents at 0 and -45 degrees, free movement between -45 and +45 degrees and free movement up to 47 degrees. Bevels can be made to the left or right and the bevel gauge appears on both sides of the saw. You DO need to remove the fence in order to achieve a 45 degree bevel - man I wish that weren’t necessary.
Special Cutting Position
If I said you can have a 12” miter saw in a 10” blade would you take it?
One thing I learned about the Kapex REB is that it has a “special cutting position” that, locks the saw head in and allows a deeper cut at the fence. When employed, it provides greater than usual cutting capacity by utilizing the back portion of the blade more effectively. A lever controls this features and allows you to cut crown molding up to 6-5/8" in the nested position and vertical cuts 4-3/4" x 3/4"
Crown Stop with Base Extension
Sold as an optional accessory, the Crown Stop with Base Extension (494 369) attaches to the left and right of the Kapex using a V-Groove and locking knob providing additional support surface and aiding in the utilization of the special cut position. The crown stop allows the Kapex to be used in the special cutting position to cut crown molding up to 6-5/8" in the nested position.
Dual-line lasers
A favorite feature of ours is the dual-line laser. The laser is adjustable and projects a dual-line to either side of the blade to accurately define the cut area for precise cut placement.
This laser has spring-loaded carriages inside the tool that protect the laser during transport. One tip that a lot of folks don’t know is that the laser lens can be cleaned over time for better visibility.
Another unique feature of the Kapex is a special trenching capability. Simply flip the green trenching lever forward, and a twist to set cut depth. This features can be used to cut kerfs and trenches to create lap joints, dados or bend a board.
Conclusion
We think the Festool Kapex REQ makes sense for contractors looking for a high quality, precision tool that was designed to deliver functionality.

Bought a damaged late model Kapex off Craigslist. Took it to the dealer to see about repairs. They had a fitted shipping crate on hand (Festool requires that of dealers) to ship the saw to the Indiana repair facility for $50 each way. When I returned to pick up the repaired saw I felt sick when I saw the long list of parts replaced and adjustments made. But get this: even though I was not the original purchaser, all the repair charges and shipping were free because the saw was less than 3 years old. That alone takes the sting out of Festool's high prices.

Mark Koons 12 year old kapex 120 sent in for preset accuracy adjustment. Ended up with recommending we replace the fence. Over the 12 years this was the 4th time sent in for repair. Don't know what the other three were for. Really felt like they were taking advantage of the situation. Hobbyist left it in the same place in his work shop the entire 12 years.

I don't know what pieces are available for owners to purchase but I know some essential parts are not for sale to the public. Between Festool, Felder, and German auto manufacturers, my opinion of their business practices is negative and generally I'd select the better Japanese products.

I am DIY, I love this saw. It is so precise and enabled me to do what professionals do with more accuracy. And the handle is very intuitive. The handle is not on the side of the blade but in the line of cut. It won’t shift the blade to the side no matter what.

@@trevorm7013 I have found that getting really accurate miters can depend on the wood itself as in if the wood has been squared up to perfection with jointer and planer. Once I took the time to process the wood, even if it looked squared, the miters came out way better.

LOVE my Kapex. Honestly, one of my favorite day-to-day features compared to my old Dewalts is the hold down clamps. Those screw type ones from other saws take so long to be actually useful. The Kapex clamps with their quick release mech is genius.

Rob, you and crew do a thorough job when you do reviews! I have had some different experiences, yes. I have seen some misses to, but maybe I am very annoyed when manufacturers miss what I see as obvious misses on function and user-friendliness. One of those "misses" is the obvious inability to use the kerf cutting function properly because the saw arbor does not meet or cross the plane of the back fence! The blade is rising behind the arbor and you will never have a proper dado or rabet across the width of a board without a "spacer" to allow the arbor centerline to meet or cross the back edge!I I have made my own "accessory" for my rail and axial 12" Bosch mitersaws. No tools, no screws, but accurate and solid hold to my back fence. Aids in dust collection too! Btw, when I began in the trade, the best motorized mitersaw was a 9" Rockwell with a wood bed! Carbide blades were not invented yet!

i have owned many compound miter saws, Dewalt, Bosch, Hitachi and many Makitas including the newer LS 1019 L and the Kapex is the only saw that gives me table saw accuracy. Like many, i couldn't justify the price fought purchasing for years, but i do not regret it at all, it was money well spent. i find that the blades on their saws are great too, both on the Kapex and the track saws..thanks for the .great review!

Another very well put together review, Rob! Its exciting to read the comments on this one because of all the controversy over price, ergonomics, and design. I've never used any Festool and have been planning to buy a Dewalt DWS780, but this makes me want to at least play around with the other brands' models before I commit. I would really like to know what your guys think of the kapex and other tools that you review outside of the head to heads. It helps to get all angles positive and negative to try to avoid surprises on a big purchase. Although, I understand if you are wary of letting other people drive your Mercedes.

Didn't mention the most important change in the newer model imho which is the motor improvements. They have increased the power and hopefully improved the notorious motor failure that has plagued this saw. I sent mine in before the 2 year cutoff after talking to them at AWFS in Vegas. They replaced the motor with the newer one at no charge and what a difference in power. It doesn't bog down nearly as bad and so far so good!

Always enjoy your content Rob! At our shop we have 3 different sanders, ts75, Domino, and 4 midi's..All Festool. Other then capacity, I prefer my cordless Makita x2 tracksaw vs ts75. Everyone grabs my cordless Makita x2 10 inch mitersaw over the Bosch x glide (which I absolutely despise) . Bosch has the GET75, which is comparable to the rotex. We have started, using Mirka 1 sander, which quit working after 3 months (trying to get it warrantied at the present) . My point is Festool charges a premium for their innovative tools, problem is other companies are catching up to them. At a huge reduction in price. The handle,cords, and price would keep me from buying the kapax. Corded tools need to be better in absolutely every way for me to pay 2x,2.5 isn't an option. I love quality tools, and now many companies make them!

Ive had the Kapex for somewhere around 4 years. I use it for all applications and currently framing inside of a 120 year old condemned remodel building. I treat this saw like your guys treat your tools. I posted some pics on the festool owners group on the topic of toughness. I strap it to the boom lift with a sysvac to work on the oriel windows and we know how jerky a boom can be and the compact design makes it easy to work right in the basket. All 45's cut side to side duue to wide 1x so the fences are off. Bottom line. I beat on this saw like any other tool and it is still accurate. It aint all shined up like every other youtubers kapex tho. and my festool sanders... they take the worst abuse of all. My point i guess? Its a good saw and the ability to flip a switch to bevel side too side instantly alone is worth the money. To the knuckleheads that say its all plastic. Show me any scms that isnt covered in a plastic shell

How do you hold a handsaw? Can you imagine cutting staight with a handsaw that has it's handle on the side? Part of the precision of the cuts comes from your hand not skewing or misaligning the blade. If you think the machine should prevent misalignment under any force, you're terribly wrong. If you where to build such a thing, the saw would be twice as big and 4 times as heavy.

Nice. Here's another one for you. Deck screws, epoxy or ceramic coated. What's the best. I know there was a point the "Deckmate" changed who the manufacturer was. I remember calling to talk to the original manufacturer before the contact info was fixed. This was when they switched to that Torx-25 bit. The manufacturer told me that Home Depot had flipped the contract to save money and I am convinced the newer product is inferior. Any time I've pulled an old deckmate (combo PH2/SQ2) out of an exterior project, it's hardly showing signs of rust. With the "newer" deckmates, they're extremely rusted and even sometimes the heads snap off when trying to back them out. You guys do great reviews. What's the best ceramic coated screw? I bet you guys would do a great comprehensive comparison. These are expensive so it would be nice to make the right choice going forward.

Besides the initial price tag the other thing that keeps me away from the Kapex is the arbor size that limits my blade choice and eliminates my ability to go to the orange big box and pick up a Diablo replacement like I can for my 10 and 12" dewalts!

Joey DaFish I’m a huge fan of Forrest blades. However, Festool factory Kapex blades have been AWESOME and VERY durable. No need to upgrade. I’ve not had to sharpen either my 60 tooth or 80 tooth in over 5 years. I have a spare 60 tooth I keep on hand. I recently compared the unused new 60-tooth with my 5+ year-old original. The difference was negligible. I put the original 60-tooth back on the saw for another year. It has generous carbide so I’ll have it resharpened when it’s needed. My Kapex may be THE most-used tool in my shop and on remote sites.

@@williamsmith9026 you're right - only track saws. In mitre saws you care about cut depth against the fence, portability, power, length of crosscut, ease of setup, accuracy and dust collection. The Festool beats most contractor saws in accuracy (this is anecdotal as I've never seen this actually measured) and dust collection (this seems to be fairly well-known). The rest comes down to function of the saw and ergonomics. Every contractor saw arguably has a much quicker stand setup that's one piece (vs the multiple pieces for the Festool), and the start handle is particularly awkward. It has its purpose - but it's hard to say that purpose is worth 2.5x the cost when you're not getting that same increase in production. Bosch, Makita, DeWalt and Milwaukee all make incredible, durable, well-made and well-engineered saws - Festool capitalizes on its niche I'm just not sure why it's so much more expensive than the next most expensive saw (Bosch Axial Glide).

IMO, the main advantage the Kapex has over (most) other CMSs is that it takes up less space, because it can be placed with its back to a wall. If you have a small shop, that can definitely be worth the price (though you might also consider Bosch's "glide" saws that can also be placed against a wall).

​@@ILruffian it's one of the big reasons I'm selling my Dewalt DWS780 and getting a Kapex. The DWS780 requires so much space and then if you want to hook up dust collection to it, which is mediocre at best, you need another 8-12" of space because it hooks up at the further back spot on a slider. I have cabinets that go 36" out from my wall thinking that would be enough, but I still couldn't fit it with dust collection hooked up. That was the final straw for me and a Kapex is on the way. I have a garage shop and can't dedicate the space the DWS780 required. The dust collection on it was horrible too.

10:11 - Has the depth range been altered for the REB? One of my problems with the original KS120 was that the depth stop's range was very limited.

Tried and true Dewalt 12" miter Sliding saw does 7 1/2 nested crown and 6 1/5 nested base. This thing needs to be 12". However, 10" saw will cut majority of the standard today's trim. But once you get into custom. It may become an issue.

Great video Rob. I think the dust collection efficiency is the number one feature that helps justify the price. I've been using the Bosch 12" axial glide miter saw for about 8 years now. I love the fact I can place it against the wall when using, but the dust collection is extremely poor and there is some blade deflection due to how the saw is held into place by the axial arms. I believe a Kapex will be the replacement for my Bosch when the Bosch finally gives up. Stay safe brother.

He mentioned using the 36mm hose for dust collection and cutting it down to 6 ft. I asked at Woodcraft whether this can be done and they called Festool and were told you can't do that any more because the hose ends aren't the same size. I suspect they might be getting confused with the new 27/32 hose (which is the standard hose that comes with their vacuums now) that goes from 27 mm to 32 mm and therefore has hose ends that are different sizes (ID). Does anyone know if you can still cut a 36 mm hose? I also was having a hard time finding another 2 hose ends for 36mm hose so you could still use the other section. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated

Ive got the first model which I bought just before this one came out.I bought it for the dust extraction cutting MDF trim which will probably get us all eventually.Dust extraction is good.I find its a good saw but no more accurate than my Dewalt 717 which is a very nice saw for the money.Buy 4 Dewalts for the price of the Festool.

Late to the review but I like the idea of the Festool. I’m about to return my 3rd Makita LS1219 in two weeks. Very disappointed in the quality control. It’s a lot of extra coin for the Festool but I should have followed my own advice in the beginning - Buy once cry once.

A few days ago I bought a Makita 40v cordless got it home and discovered it was cutting 1mm out of square over a 200mm depth of cut so no better than my old saw i was replacing. I took it back to the shop and checked another 2 saws of the same model and they both had the same error on the same side. I needed a saw quickly for a challenging joinery job so rather than waste more time checking the accuracy of saws in the same price range I bit the Festo bullet and bought the Kapex 120. It's a dream compared to the cheaper brands....no tears this time!

As you said Rob I couldn't justify the price and kapex doesn't offer much than the front rail and dust extraction , so I went with the dewalt 12" flexvolt and it's very accurate saw for 60% less money , and no matter what festool claims regarding the height cutting capacity, still can't beat the capacity of the 12 inch

Very accurate saw ,but the dust shroud still catches on the fence when cutting at an angle ,ie 20 to 45 degrees ,and you have to remove the fence festal wants to look at this problem ,other than that it’s a very good saw

Rob… what about the new cordless Festool miter? It seems to be very capable with the exception of cutting base in the vertical and crown nested. I hate lasers so the Kapex would bother me after using shadow line saws but the new Festool miter uses the shadow line. The biggest question is… can a 8.5” miter saw be a primary miter saw for a trim carpenter?

Very important it doesn't matter which machine.the best you can do buy always a Slide Compound Mitre Saw with the handle in a line above the saw blade,everything has to be in line Slide bar rails,handle,and saw blade. it's better no tilt saw blade, and engine with softstart . Doesn’t look like true direct drive, no belt or gears ? Looks like where the motor is mounted it would have to transfer from vertical to horizontal ?...is it a flex shaft ?

I have achieved great accuracy with my new rail forward Makita. I am a pro and have had all brands. The Makita is the smoothest saw I have had yet. That Festool motor doesn't sound too healthy.

@@williamvolbrecht2232 the 75 is great and has no competiton for it's size. But the ts55 is underpowered, just get the mafell, it's a little more expensive but the king of saws (one of the only affordable mafell tool tho hahah)

I've used the ts55 for about 11 years. Incredibly accurate saw. Great for plywood and sheetgoods. Underpowered for thicker materials, for instance trimming bottoms of drawers or beveling sides of doors. Extreme precision for fine cabinetry or millwork.

$1500… not a big deal. I just wish Festool would listen to US buyers and make one more saw.. in its line. Festool… if your willing to listen make another saw. (1) keep striving to high quality. (2) offer a 12” saw (3) offer a horizontal handle (4) use a shadow line and add flood light that lights up the right and left wings but don’t wash out the cut line. (5) keep weight under 50 lbs.

Kunjiklub _ I think the led light is the better choice- it never can lose calibration and auto adjusts for blade thickness

@KelMaster Construction Good points. I've only used a DeWalt miter saw with the XPS so I was just wondering the difference with the laser. So far I really like it, and as you mentioned, it doubles to illuminate the area.

Apparently that is not their plan and makes sense to me. I heard the are developing a power bank to plug in their power tools (vac, mitre saw etc). I personally don't think the technology is good enough for cordless mitre saws yet.

Handle position is a deal breaker otherwise I'd own one . Everything else i love other than the stand , but i would just stick with the toughbuilt stand i own . But that handle positing having to stretch up over to press the safety realise is just too much . Bosch 12" Glide beats this all day long

I've been using my Kapex for 10 years and it runs like the day I bought it. Considering buying another one for a renewed warranty if there are some new features that make it worth it but I'm expecting the one I have to last another 10 years at least.

Problem is that the handle/trigger isn’t oriented properly. It’s vertical and it should be horizontal. It’s very awkward to use.

I am considering buying one. However here in Australia if you purchase with the stand its almost $3,000. Even without its just over $2,000. Its not for the DIY for sure. I earn my living making doors and windows so if its serviceable for many years then its an investment.

При условии длительного ,( кратковременного ) хранения пилы kapex ks 60, допустимо или хранение пилы с кареткой ( головой) закреплённой в самом нижнем положении ( как при переноске) или она должна быть в верхнем положении ( поднята) , я к тому не повлияет ли это на упругость пружины в будущем. В инструкции такой информации не нашел

Rob, What does the REB stand for? You kept saying in this video REQ. I have had mine for 11 years , it just quit on me today. I think it is the switch. Has anyone you know that has had to ship theirs in for service? I heard they replace anything that could be worn out making your cost to repair expensive.

@@ConcordCarpenter Thanks Rob for responding. I watched several KZbin videos repairing a Kapex, I just ordered new parts for mine and will be repairing it myself. I am replacing the switch, electronic board and brushes. That should keep me going for for a while. If I had sent it to Festool I am afraid it would have been to expensive not worth it, because I would like a new one. Why spend $800.00 -1000 on repairs when 500.00 more get a new saw.

I have a Delta Cruiser and a Bosch I can't understand what this saw is doing to justify close to 1000.00 more in price. Nobody ever actually says why it's worth the money. I've got 1200 invested in 2 saws that have great accuracy, ergonomics and features. What more is the festool giving me?

solomon quinn Festool received about a 1-2 percent repair/return on their Kapex motors burning out. Their process is when a tool hits a 2-3 percent of failure is when they start looking into why or what is happening. With the Kapex , Festool started early , redesigned the motor and has been fine ever since. It’s tough to break an impression, I get that!

Totally agree with you here. That handle design looks like it would be hard on the wrists after a few cuts. The wrist doesn't naturally flex that way.
