Alright, everyone enjoys a friendly little testing shoot out between tools. Today in our very non scientific test we will be pitting the Festool TPC 18/4 Hammer Drill/Driver versus the Makita GPH01 XGT 40V Hammer Drill/Driver and the Milwaukee Gen 3 Hammer Drill/Driver (2804-20). All three of these tools are the top of the line from each brand. Let's have some fun!

Enjoyed watching your comparison. The TPC is my one and only drill. It combines power and sensitivity. Nevertheless the Festool is very heavy for repetitive work. Cheers from Germany :)

Seems a bit heavy, but not out of line considering it is a hammer drill. Spit on about the power and precision. 👍🏻

Great video, thanks! I'm bet money that the gearbox design of the Festool was licensd from Fein. I have a 12v Fein drill that has the exact same gearbox and guess which one was released first? The Fien at least 5 years ago. I've never seen it in another drill, even from German brand drills. Festool's oscillator and angle grinder are almost certain from Fein too. The Festool Fastfix and Centrotec accessories are exceedingly useful. Yes, it's all expensive but quality costs. On the Festool, at speed 4, because the RPM are so high, there is next to no torque. Same speeds 3. If I was doing anything heavy, I'd use the Makita and for everything else, I'd use the Festool. Remember, the Makita (140 NM) has almost twice the torque of the Festool (75 NM). I'm not a fan of Milwaukee as I think they sacrifice finesse and longevity for pure power which is penny wise (marketing) and pound foolish (tool life). Your observation on the Milwaukee heat at 37:37 may go towards proving my point.

Thanks for doing this video review. Not so helpful for me, but it was enjoyable to just watch (I already have experience with most of these). I have the TPC and love my 18v Makita's, and have used the Gen3 Milwaukee. I returned my Milwaukee because I tried out 2-3 of them and the trigger kept snagging on something internally when I would go to actuate it and I just wanted to try it out and see if it was better for me. My Makita's and Festool have never had issues, and I just didn't want to deal with it. I sold a different Gen3 to a friend who's an electrician and the entire chuck sheared off during normal use. Milwaukee isn't terrible but it's not for me. I really appreciate the electronic clutch on the Festool. I have both the TPC and the T18+3 which has always had the most accurate electronic clutch of any drill I've used. I do wish there was just a little more torque in the 4th gear on the TPC, but I'm sure it was sacrificed for having the 4 gearbox. It still does everything I'd want, and those extra seconds aren't make it or break it life or death situations, hah. The only downside is the price and the dirty looks you get from other normal construction folk who find out how much the brand costs. I wouldn't trade my Festools back for anything though- They're insanely smooth which is something they don't make well enough known, like butter. Some info on the TPC- after my own testing- it really does NOT like self-feeding bits especially on the 3rd and 4th gears. If you used old school spade bits without the self feed- it would work on the higher speeds. I can blast through with a 2" holesaw on 4th gear, but like you found with the spade bit, a meager 1" bogs it down because it sucks in super fast and hit's a huge amount of torque resistance. The lower speeds in gear 1 and 2 will chew things up all day long. It's fine for me, personally because I have monster right angle drills and so forth for going through things for the rougher construction. The winning part of the TPC for me is the offset chuck, the 90 degree chuck, and the rotational stop as well as the higher gear 4 speed for generally smaller drill bits. I've had my Makita's bind up in the past for me and gotten some nasty bruises on the back of my hand slamming into it or pinning my hand against a wall.

Thanks for the comment and information. I am not one to usually care what others think, these tools are phenomenal and I really appreciate their features and ergonomics. I would agree, those 3rd and 4th gears are really fast and don't like a lot of torque. But for the right applications, those gears are great and when you need the torque, 1st and 2nd get it done. The anti rotation feature is great and a real wrist saver! 👍🏻 Enjoy your Festool's! 🔥

There is an open drill setting on the clutch for when one is using drill bits on the Festool drill. It should show the symbol of a drill bit. That removes the torque stop and allows the drill to actually drill. At least this was the case on my PDC which was the original version of the drill you're using.
@garnerreviews
@garnerreviews Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. 👍🏻 This is the case for all drill/drivers I believe. The clutch setting is useful when you are trying to control how deep you drive a fastener. Great for assembly work etc. Thanks for sharing and watching.

I think the dial on the Festool is like the Milwaukee where drill mode and clutch settings are on the same selector. Festool also has some additional light settings on the dial too if I remember right.

If you ever get a chance to snag a Metabo 18V....the Metabo BS or even GB 18 LTX Q I drills have electronic torque control and over 1000 in lbs torque...plus similar quick change accessories to the Festool. The BS can do 3800 rpm in 3rd gear. The GB has auto-reverse chucks for tapping threads, too.

They randomly neglected to release the quick versions of their newest LTX 2-speed drills in the USA because…Metabo. I owned the three speed and while running circles around the similar Fein 4-speed and PDC, Makita could run circles around all of them. I’d like new 2 speed Metabo but I guess I’m going to wait a couple more months and pay three times the price for the Mafell version. 🤷‍♀️

@@robertrada4783 Would you expect the GB LTX Q tapper to be a solid drill? I do wish they could go even lower in torque but I guess that's why folks get the Festool CXS. But for a DIY drill the Metabo GB LTX Q looks amazing. Just wish it came with most of the attachments in a kit and that the dual charger wasn't stupid expensive.

Lol, indeed classic. 😂 If you can get your hands on them, I think you would really like them. Honestly that's why I really like the Makita tools, they seem to be a great balance between refinement and raw power. 👍🏻

I just got a job that requires a higher standard and tougher drill than my little 12v Bosch multi chuck drill. I love the Festools look. Out of DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, and Festool...What would you recommend? I have to be able to drill sometimes 1/4 inch thick steel with circular hole bits and other sheet metals. Price is an issue...but I'm willing to fork over for my first Festool if need be. It's better to buy a tool that's more expensive when it comes to making money with a tool. I am just building my little tool collection really so...having a nice nice drill I think is a must (My coworkers HATE it and get pissed when my drill dies and have to ask to use theirs)

Great question and thanks for watching my video. Honestly this is a tough question but I will try to walk through my thought process with you. Are you working primarily with steel or what do you primarily work with? Maybe you could let me know what is your trade. Depending on what you are doing daily and what trade you are in may move you toward a specific brand.

@@garnerreviews Thanks for the reply, your video was great and informative. Right now I'm installing, running, terminating, and other tasks for data cable. Sometimes we need to drill into spots for mounting security cameras or setting up switch boxes. I drill through wood, sheetrock, sheetmetal, other metals as well. The size of my bosch was nice for fastening scrws or bolts and vise-versa but the other day my drill with two full batteries died after one hole in 1/4 inch thick steel (which is pretty hard stuff). Thank you for your help and responding :)
@garnerreviews
@garnerreviews Жыл бұрын
Honestly any of the upper end drills from any of those companies would do the task for you. If you are on a current 18V platform it would probably be worth sticking to that platform. If you aren't on a 18V platform then you have freedom to choose but you may want to take some time and think through possible tools you may need in the future and pick the platform that will provide those tools. My immediate thought is that if you are free to choose a 18V then you may want to look into the Bosch lineup specifically for the 18V Chameleon (GSR18V-535FCB15) Flexi-Click. I would assume that the different heads like the 90 degree or the eccentric head would come in handy while drilling in tough to reach areas. And the Bosch 18V Core batteries are top tier and have a great runtime for their size and power. I would probably not go with the Festool for this application. The TPC 18/4 could certainly handle it but Festool as a battery platform is geared towards more finish type tasks in general. Another brand to maybe consider if you run into a lot of steel work is Metabo. Top tier tools but come with a price tag and may be hard to find locally depending on your area.

You said drill mode for festool. When in drill mode the clutch setting are redundant. You need to be in driver mode. Unless festool works differently?
@garnerreviews
@garnerreviews 2 жыл бұрын
So with the Festool, the drill is in either drill mode or hammer mode (selector on the top of the drill) and if you want to engage a drive mode with a clutch setting there is a dial on the backside of the handle. It gives you 13 clutch settings I believe and then a drill setting that ignores the clutch. Hopefully that makes sense. I will put out a short video on that tomorrow to show the difference. 👍🏻
