Happy sunshine smiley face. This is a great option for those that do not have a collection of tubes to try. the base is a great place to jam the components i love it.
@phillanassa7592 ай бұрын
This is a good option going forward. As certain tubes become rarer and more expensive, this is something that will keep gear going into the future! I like the LED idea, but it has to be DIM as dim as the OEM vacuum bulb it replaced. I think your next experiment should be for linear CB amps.. for those specific to the power tubes have become prohibitively expensive. Now all you have to do is engineer the grain and the grit that vacuum bulbs have and solid state often lacks..

I have had comments disappear from multiple KZbin channels. Totally innocuous. No rational explanation. Channels for electronics, computers and wrenching. They appear to post, but on edit attempt or page refresh they are gone. So far, though, have not been unsubscribed.
@theLuigiFan0007Productions2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I've run into that as well. It's the automatic filters removing something it detects as "not allowed". Anything with a url causes it to delete a majority of comments before they post publicly. And once it deleted a comment of yours, it's more "suspicious" of the next few you write from my experience. I don't miss all the phishing comments, but I am pretty annoyed at how often it mistakenly deletes mine... if Google search can verify the safety of links and content, KZbin's comment checker can as well. It's just lazy design.
@theLuigiFan0007Productions2 ай бұрын
Additionally, the creator can manually review some of the comments and approve them. However, some things just go into the void never to be seen again. And other times, a video gets so many comments you'd need a full time crew to just read and approve comments all day to review them in time. So, I understand why creators don't always bother reviewing anything that gets held.

I did this many years ago when I needed the unobtanium magic eye 6CD7 (EM34). I used a 6AF6G and the missing amplifier triode section was solved by using a DN2530 N-channel depletion mode high voltage mosfet driving the deflection vane. The second deflection vane was connected to the first via a 50v zener, so when the first sector was closed, the second sector then started closing, exactly like with the original 6CD7. Another good mosfet is the LND150 or the DN2540, the latter good for 400v. Now some folks may chime in why I did not use the 6AE6 as a driver for the 6AF6 : I had a space issue, very small radio 🙂

My grandpa had an AEG super 264 W (I think W is for Wechselstrom which means AC power) and his room had a window to the big garden of the house. He used to turn it up very loud and do the gardening or walking around in the garden. As he became older, he turned it even more up :). I managed to take a look at inside of it several times after he passed away. It had expectedly a giant oval speaker and several tubes.

Although still plenty around some are getting really pricey especially audio outputs. Would love to see a full resurrection where you make all solid state replacements and a comparison of quality. I always look forward to seeing what the next video will be, love the channel 👍

I believe the tubes in this Tolex covered receiver are *directly* heated, where the heaters in the tubes are also the cathodes. There is an "instant on" effect, similar to transistorized electronics. One could theoretically replace every tube in this radio with transistors, if accommodations are made for voltage and biasing requirements of replacement transistors .

I really like the idea of making solid state replacements for these low voltage tubes. I don't know why somebody didn't think of this before. The HAM radio club (in high school 1978) had a pile of Korean War walkie talkies that we could convert to 2 meters. The biggest problem that we had was getting replacement micro-micro tubes. (I can't remember what they are actually called but the tubes are about the size of your pinky finger). The tubes were normal values but miniaturized. This would have been a great solution to that problem. I don't know why none of the teachers thought of this --- If you wait long enough the answer always comes?
@sgath922 ай бұрын
There were a few electronics magazines around the 1978 era that had run articles on this basic premise, though its been so long I don't remember which magazines they were to say how popular they were (I don't think it was QST). One of the best things about the internet is being able to search a wide variety of content by text/keyword where as in the pre-2000s unless you happened to luck across the right issue of the right magazine, finding such a project was not always going to happen. The first solid state tube project I lucked across was in the mid 90s when someone in Japan had done a write up on converting a 5-01A tube Atwater Kent model 20 to solid state, allowing it to be operated off a 9v smoke detector battery. Of course, other than the schematic it was all in Japanese so I had no idea what it was saying. Always wanted to give that project a go.

There is the Nuvistor tubes that were even smaller and introduced in 1958 by RCA. Other manufacturers followed suit. RCA used them in their color TV sets in the tuning sections until they started moving to 100 percent solid state color sets around 1971.

@rennethjarrett45802 ай бұрын
I found this one very unique. I have seen to sub a diode for a rectifier tube but never any other tube till now. The thing is in tube radio sets not many tube are needed, but in a comparable transistor set there are more transistors then the tube version... If conversions are able to do all of the tubes, it proves the transistor set design is over done, since you don't need that many transistors. However I do know many electronic specs claim a diode to be counted like a transistor. So if the tube modified to a transistor design contains diodes that would equal more transistor like parts... So it might not be a win in that regard. But it will allow the tube systems to be able to be repaired even after the tubes are all gone.
@eDoc20202 ай бұрын
Part of the difference is transistor sets usually have push-pull audio output for much better battery life.

When hurricane sandy (or Irene?) flooded parts of Long Island there was a guy on the Antique Radio Forum whose collection got flooded. A surprising amount of his early tube stash did not survive the flood waters (lost vacuum and took on flood water) despite being rescued from that environment very quickly after the disaster. I've heard similar stories about 7 & 9 pin tubes going to air because of corrosion around the pins if stored outside in sheds/barns without ever being dunked into water. In the lab, you can use a glass under vacuum to harvest some noble gases as the glass will keep air out, but not certain nobles. What any of this means for longevity in the next hundred years of these already up to 100 year old tubes is anyone's guess....
