That crazy instrument is a Hurdy Gurdy, a medivial string instrument with similarities to a violin. Instead of a bow the strings are rubbed by a wheel connected to a hand-crank. Via wedges the strings are pushed similar to the fingers on a violin. In a way it sounds like a kind of bagpipe, an instrument that also appears in this song. In Fireschwanz songs this player either plays a Hurdy Gurdy or - more often - a violin.

😂😂😂🤭 That cranking instrument was a hurdy gerdy😂😂 This is likely in Germany where there are so many amazing Castles, many that I explored as a child when my father was stationed on the Americain Airforce base Ramstein. Yes, the same place that Rammstein took their name from.🙄 Angus is also a lead vocalist guest in one of my favorite NanowaR of Steel music videos.😃 So glad that you loved this super-group song. So many big Metal names all in one performance. 🥰🥰Much love from a Canadian Dear🇨🇦

So, the weird instrument is a hurdy-gurdy (never knew that word in English, I'm German, here it's called Leierkasten), the girl playing it is Stephanie, who is usually the violinst in the band. The ruin/castle where it was filmed is the Burg Gössenheim, kind of close to Frankfurt (for US standards), more or less between Aschaffenburg and Würzburg, in Bavaria (Franken).... We had a picknick in the castle where the shield maids did their performance. Great location, great song, great view - and super cool because Alea wasn't around during the filming, so he did his part later on and was added to the "movie"..... Great one! We're now totally fan of Feuerschwanz

The instrument is a Hurdy Gurdy. Instead of a bow it use a wheel to get the strings to vibrate and it uses keys to press the strings sideways.

Feuerschwanz (foy-air-shvantz) translates to Fire Tail, with the 100% intentional double meaning/ slang translation Fire Dick. It was founded in 2004 as a parody band to counterpart the (sometimes overly) serious medieval folk scene, with silly and/ or raunchy lyrics and ambiguous stage names. Over the years they left the on-the-nose parody while keeping a mostly humorous or at least light hearted approach and evolved from acoustic folk over folk rock into folk metal. Their original material is usually in German but in 2020 they started doing covers in English too. The featured guest singers have worked with them prior to this. Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum) was guest singer on another cover song (Ding [Thing]) which ultimately led to the founding of the side project The Dark Side Of The Moon, which was mentioned in the comments already. Thomas Winkler was guest singer on the live version of the Ed Sheeran / The Hobbit cover I See Fire (credited as Angus McFife, his stage name when he was with Gloryhammer, his new band is Angus McSix which is also his new stage name). Members of Feuerschwanz and Saltatio Mortis (in this case represented by singer Alea der Bescheidene = Alea the Humble) have collaborated on several occasions, for example both of SaMo's bagpipe players featured on the live version of Schildmaid (Shield Maiden). By the way, Saltatio Mortis made a wonderful cover of Electric Callboy's Hypa Hypa

Best Manowar cover ever🤣 - complete with intentional irony (Manowar does it unintentionally😅) and a *ton* of good singers, especially noteworthy (in addition to the two from Feuerschwanz themself, *Hauptmann* [armoured] and *Hodi* [long flowing hair]) are... okay, everyone but I'd check out especially *Melissa Bonny* (dark dressed lady with impressive face makeup) of *Ad Infinitum* (her own band) but for maximum effect I'd suggest checking her out in *Jenny of Oldstones* in her side project with guitarist *Hans Platz* (top hat) *The Dark Side of the Moon* and *Alea der Bescheidene* (bloke with the impressive full beard) singer of the band *Saltatio Mortis* - for something anglophone (they chiefly do songs in German) I'd suggest the Elder Scrolls Online tie in *Pray to the Hunter* - and for *extreme* "He-Mannishness" see Angus McSix - used to be Angus McFife seen here armoured in Green, then left Glory Hammer and re-incarnated in golden armour as Angus McSix and I'd suggest checking out *Master of the Universe* (see the singular?^^) for a maximum blast of absurd but great fun power metal. Oh it was filmed in some random ruined castle in Franconia, probably around the corner from Feuerschwanz' home. Not a joke: We in Germany have more castles (and Palaces, and residences and whatnot) than the US has McDonalds eateries... Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

You may also know Saltatio Mortis from their cover of Electric Callboy's Hyper Hyper as they're one of the 7 Artists on that cover EP. They have a lot of great songs and i love their gaming related stuff, like the dragonborne comes, my mother told me or pray to the hunter. Their latest album Finsterwacht (Darkenguard) is dedicated to the german D&D alike pen and paper RPG "Das Schwarze Auge" (The black/dark eye) and their expansion of the same name.

These guys are both hilarious and awesome. The guy with the chainmail hood, the guy who was playing the pipes, drummer, guitarists, and the ladies fighting with axes are the regular bandmembers, plus a violinist who isn't in this for some reason. The cranked instrument is a hurdy gurdy being played by the great Patty Gurdy. For recs I give you their cover of Rammstein's Engle: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enPEgnmoYtl9fcksi=HA6uyO1QB0S7tux7 and one of their original songs, Memento Mori: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5rFZmdjoruhfdksi=LF0dG72YvSsxW51D

Just one little correction: that's not Patty Gurdy but Feuerschwanz's violinist Johanna playing the hurdy gurdy.

@@lisacheney7904 No problem. Johanna doesn't seem to use the hurdy gurdy that often too, out of my head the only other video that comes to mind is Skaldenmet. And I believe when playing WotWU live she also uses the violin most of the times but not 100% about that.
