Resurrecting this comment thread. I was inspired by this build and ended up making a party face that was Wis based. I grabbed Shillelagh and Magic Stone. I used the Two-Bird sling to increase my chances of hitting someone at range each turn and stack Dreadful Strike. I picked up the Crusher feat to allow me to move enemies away from my friends while freezing them in place with the fear effect.

Another thing to note about Plant Growth, especially for Rangers, is that the duration is instantaneous. This means that the effect that causes them to grow is magical, but after that they're nonmagical plants hindering movement. You know, the kind of movement hindering nonmagical plants you can move through without being slowed as part of Land's Stride. It also means Plant Growth is immune to dispel magic as there's no magic remaining to be dispelled. I just love that spell.
@jambamenome84813 жыл бұрын
Best for combining with any sort of 'Difficult Terrain' effect, as they stack. 1/2 movement speed, whilst every foot costs 4 feet of movement? Anyone walking in that space is moving at 1/8th their normal speed.
@predwin19983 жыл бұрын
@@jambamenome8481 Difficult Terrain and Plant Growth do stack, but not exactly in that way I'm afraid. Difficult Terrain doesn't cut your speed in half, but rather makes it so that for each foot you want to move, you need to spend 1 additional foot of your movement. So when you combine the two they move at 1/5th their normal speed, which is still quite a hinder. I think it's strongest when combined with displacement effects, as they continue to work at full capacity. Even if we just look at the Shove action or Tasha's Telekinetic feat, that mere 5 feet push suddenly costs the target 20-25 feet of movement to return to where they stood instead of the usual 5-10 feet. If you move them even just 10 feet, many creatures might have to take the Dash action just to get back to wherever they stood. If the movement effects are harmless you can also use them to move your allies trough and save them 20-25 feet per 5 feet you move them. Essentially any forced movement becomes roughly 4-5 times as powerful as it would normally be, since the distance moved relative to the distance a creature could move normally is greatly increased. I also consider Plant Growth a saving grace on the Fey Patron for Warlocks for this reason, as they can Repelling Blast foes through it and wish them luck getting anywhere near your team at 1/4 or 1/5 speed while getting pushed back up to 40 feet (but expect 10-20 on the levels you'd use this) per round. Especially without requiring concentration this makes Plant Growth one of those spells where I'm perfectly fine with spending a 5th level Pact Magic slot on casting if the right situation comes up, despite not gaining any further benefits.

I understand that it doesn't end the fear, but I would imagine it would at least temporary suspend the effects. An invisible creature is effectively heavily obscured. Heavy obscurement breaks line of sight which fear specifically requires for the disadvantage component. One component of the frightened condition is that you cannot willingly approach the source of the fear; if the creature doesn't know where you are, that cannot be enforced, unless you have some weird ruling where invisible creatures can be located by a creature frightened by them.
@Elkay_J3 жыл бұрын
@@brennennestvogel3983 i do agree about the weird interaction of knowing where the invisible creature is. Id just rule that they cant go near where they last saw them. But heavy obscurement does not break line of sight. It only treats you as blinded. Which also does not break line of sight, only makes you fail ability checks for seeing. The fear condition makes sure to state line of sight not "if you can see the creature" which many other effects do

You truly are the best at finding, optimizing and presenting these synergies, great build! I think playing this build i would dip Undead at level 2. Sure, this will delay a lot of features by one level each and most likely come out a bit weaker but it will also let me benefit from Dread Form (and a recharcheable spell slot) for the entire leveling process. Sure, the main build synergy will still come at the same point (Level 8) but fear adn temp hp boost are quite strong at early levels and your second attack (which is great for more opportunities to apply hit) will only be delayed by one level. I've found that i want to get dips done as soon as reasonable and not wait for halfway or even 2/3rds of the campaign to finally add it, both for fun and for roleplay reasons. If the campaign starts at level 2 that way you don't have to beg the DM to facilitate an opportunity to sell your soul but instead can work it into your backstory. Thanks for another great build guide! I really enjoy your content, just found your unbelievably thematic Ancestral Guardian/Echo Knight build and it made me heavily reconsider changing my Shield Master version backup character (in case EGtW is allowed; Echo Knight adds so much flavor to the AG theme) :D

This build would also work very well with the Eladrin race from monsters of the multiverse. they get a number of bonus action teleports each day equal to their proficiency bonus, and from 3rd level the teleport has a rider effect that can charm or frighten. So, that's another way to frighten and charm, and another feature that make sure you're always making good use of your bonus action and reaction.

If I was having as many combat encounters as you usually prepare for, I'd probably have the summon fey up for when I couldn't use the form of dread. @Chris, Most of the time I agree with you. However, I think there are three ways I would optimize this build. 1: If you're going to dip Warlock, you should strongly consider going full elf instead of 1/2 elf. With the build you proposed you are getting a +1, +1, +2 (which is nice) and 2 proficiencies. However, with a full elf you get Trance. Trance is AMAZING for warlocks. 2: Your build recommends hitting level 7 ranger before dipping. I would recommend dipping at level 3. This delays your second attack, your ASI and your Beguiling Twist, but you get those pact slots online at level 3! 3: I think nearly everything in the Tasha's Ranger options are better than the PHB. But the one I would strongly consider is: Natural Explorer. By 10th level you get three terrains where you can't become lost, stay alert to danger even while tracking or foraging and know exactly how many, how large and (a good idea of how far away) ANY other thing in this environment is? I think it's situationally better than deft explorer. (Like in Chult or some other area where the environment is a threat to your survival) I would build him as a Wood Elf of Aerenal (fits thematically) (You get Perception and a +5 to your speed, and expertise in a skill) offsetting your loss in deft explorer and the 1/2 elf proficiencies. Wood Elf if your DM isn't onboard with the elves of Aerenal. At level 3 whenever your party rests, you can trance, gaining all the benefits of a long rest in 4 hours. This leaves you 4 un-accounted for hours. Cast Goodberry! You get two pact level slots that recharge on a short rest. That is 8 free castings per night. They last 24 hours and you get 10 each. From level 3 onward you have 80 points of portable healing on you at all times. You're healing better than a 14th level character at level 3. It's better than the 7th level spell "Heal" and it's better than a 14th level paladin's lay on hands.

Edit: so I wrote this before finishing the video and I realized leonin with this build and one maybe two level of barbarian for the rage damage resist might give a fairly solid melee ranger, possibly swapping sharpshooter with pole arm master so you can potentially have 4 hits to apply dread strike with. Flavor wise it's excellent to be this primal, terrifying lion humanoid that was somehow blessed in the woods that charges into battle and who instills an aoe fear while your blades barely seem to touch it. The constitution and strength aren't awesome damage stat wise but the aoe fear from the first level seems solid if you somehow get rushed by a wolf pack or something to pop and run if you get caught out by an enemy party while scouting. But the easily resistable aoe fear means you have a very high likelihood of some of them succeed that save to beguile twist it onto someone else.

I'm thinking that warlock a couple more levels would do a lot. Warlock 2, twice the pact slots and two invocations--Eldritch Mind could really help to keep your hour of Hex or Hunter's Mark. Misty Visions up an area of smoke or fog that you can see through and enemies have to take an action to try to look through, if they even think to check that it's an illusion. Or, with a 3rd level, level 2 pact slots, take eldritch mind and Darkness and really abuse your Elven accuracy advantage. As a bonus, take Pact of the Chain and have an invisible imp giving a free advantage on an attack a turn even without spells, or carrying around a rock with your darkness spell on it. Darkness could interfere with frightening, but if they get out of the darkness to see you they have it again I'm pretty sure.

Another potential form of redundancy can seeing if a friend would be interested in playing a Oath of Conquest Paladin. Makes it even more likely that people are going to be shaking in their boots and makes the frightened condition even more impactful. This party would probably tend towards evil but you can always choose to roleplay differently until initiative is rolled ;) Would probably be an interesting evil party composition, throw in a necromancy wizard, a phantom rogue, whispers bard, war cleric etc. Just because you're evil doesn't mean you murder innocent people indiscriminately! I feel like running at least one evil one-shot gets the creative juices flowing, villains are often more interesting characters than heroes.

What a badass build. I think wisdom need to be higher earlier to get more fears out.

frightened + ensnaring strike could be interesting. If they fail their strength save they take damage each turn, become Restrained -and have disadvantage on their strength checks to break out of it [or regular roll if < than Medium sized] while frightened.
@PsyrenXY Жыл бұрын
While its fewer ability scores and skills, i'd recommend trying Leonin or Winter Eladrin with this build as well, as they let you fear things right at level 1 and start fear-twisting immediately on hitting 7

I REALLY like the idea behind this build. How do you feel about a 2 level dip in war-cleric? You can channel divinity to give +10 to an attack roll, somewhat mitigation the sharpshooter negative, and you can use your bonus action to do an extra longbow attack. Not always useful, but if you need burst damage, this is a nice way to get it. The extra procs of hunter's mark/hex, and fey wanderer damage, and sharpshooter damage could really spike your damage. Plus it lets you wear heavy armour (unless for some reason the 1 level in warlock doesn't allow this?)

How did it go?
@beleva093 жыл бұрын
@@Almighty_Mage dm either didn't save so they got feared one turn or saved both so no fear :/ But all in all, it was really fun to see people's reactions the first time I did it and I would absolutely play this again!

If you don't want disadvantage on stealth goblins do have leather armor, and leather armor only costs 10 gold anyway so it isn't that hard to get your hands on it for when you choose to stealth around.

I am thinking of starting Undead Warlock, mainly for concept, because it seems more natural to me that it is a character that wants to get rid of that stain. And it gives me Wis saves too. But, it is a pain to slow down access to extra attack, of course, and beguiling twist. I am taking a Shadar-Kai, running from Shadowfell and the grasp of his patron. And taking booming blade instead of mage hand, for some emergency button. Thought of even increasing more Cha to +2, but only if rolling for stats. Just an idea. Would start frightening at lvl 1, and thats nice too. (Sorry for this late comment)

First half of the video: seems like a normal rundown of a Ranger. Second half of the video: Form of Dread. Oh shit this is gonna be good.

Eladrin Elf Winter could be awesome for this. Focus on wisdom and get druidic warrior, magic stones and Shillelagh. Main weapons: Quarterstaff, and Sling. you could get sharpshooter, but I like the idea of crusher with sentinel(you can move a creature 5 feet with your quarterstaff if you hit them with a reaction, then their speed is reduced to 0, you can also get polarm master but that would be at 12th level unless you're human Variant). Crusher also works with magic stones since it's bludgeoning damage, spike growth combo but not that great, it would be better with a swarmkeeper moving them 15 feet and another 5 feet with crusher, back to the center of the spike growth!!! Have a pouch of pebbles to use magic stones on, and if all else fails go melee. The original multiclass idea I had was eloquence Bard, minimum of 24 deception and persuasion at 9th level. I honestly think the Fey Wanderer Ranger can stand on its own using this. Magic stones and Shillelagh count as magical Bludgeoning damage so boom. Eladrin Elf might change when the new book comes out but idk.

The thing i missed is that, you can choose to make it frightened OR charmed. When i played my fey wanderer, i usually only used frightened on physical attack enemies (melee/ranged) cause the disadvantage / do not approach is incredible, however, against casting enemies, you have aoe spells. As soon as someone is charmed, it will generally try to avoid harmfull spells that include you. And ever so often, they might include you into a beneficial spell

MoM adds an amazing racial choice for Fey Wanderer with Eladrin. 2 of their 4 seasons adds a rider onto their fey step, that they can use pb times per short rest, that force creatures to save against charmed or frightened.

@texteel3 жыл бұрын
I asume you are implying getting more reactions somehow?
@samueldrunkard61293 жыл бұрын
@@texteel no they get a save at the end of each of there turns until they make it so if they succeed one of those while you still have your reaction you can jump it to another creature
@TreantmonksTemple3 жыл бұрын
I guess that's true after the initial application, I hadn't even thought of that.
@texteel3 жыл бұрын
@@samueldrunkard6129 ah you meant within 1 combat, to bounce it. I thought you meant within 1 round, somehow buying extra reactions (I think Mercer's cobalt soul monk can do that?)

I wonder how effective summon woodland beings would be using the sea hag death glare with this. You don't get it until 14th level I think but a druid gets it at 7 so at 8 when you are ready to fear spam they have it ready to go and the hag can force the admittedly low save to 0 a creature every round. Would be fun to try.

Immune to frightened means you automaticly succeed, so if your ally has an AoE fear effect that could choose to friendly fire, then he can choose you so you use Beguiling twist

I think I'd have gone to second level warlock for the invocations ... Devil's Sight, Mask of Many Faces and Misty Visions all seem appropriate to this character concept, though you'd only get two ... and for the extra spell slot. But then, when I'm considering a small dip into warlock, that's what I *ALMOST ALWAYS* do, so it may just be habit. ;) Also, you may delay getting your 15th-level ability by another level, but I consider that a fair tradeoff for a couple more first-level spell slots, especially at lower levels.
@morganpetros96352 жыл бұрын
Other thoughts: I know Chris dislikes Charm Person because it's a save-or-suck, single target spell with limited combat utility, but on this build it can be pretty good even in a fight, and that's not to mention its role playing and interrogation uses. Also, Hex is a trap, as is Hunter's Mark. They might be okay at the very lowest levels, but we're talking about taking Hex *at eighth level* here. It might not be as much of a trap as for a level 8 warlock, whose limited spell slots are now automatically upcast to 4th level spells, but the average damage bonus (roughly 2.4 DPR if using Sniper, 4.2 if you have a reliable source of Advantage) isn't worth your Concentration, much less a first-level spell slots. Cause Fear, on the other hand, MIGHT be worth it, specifically because its target gets a save every round. If it continually fails the save, great; it remains afraid of you. If it *MAKES* its save, however (and it most likely will), that's yet another chance to inflict the Frightened condition on another opponent. 😈

I would really like to make a more melee focused build using dhampir flavoring every thing as Shadowfell influenced - every before Summon Fey seems flexible enough. If I go this route should I take first level undead right at second level and get by with booming blade at 5th level?

Really love the concept, keeping it my back pocket incase maybe I do die and want to speak with my DM on a RP reason to come back. Due to your reach this build is all I see on posts, or the Wis based ranger new with tashas, curious how this would compare to just straight ranger, guessing just less control
