Feynman: ahistoricality of physics & two different perspectives used for guessing

Feynman, in conversation with Fred Hoyle, describes the ahistorical perspective that is present in the practice of physics when thinking about physical laws in analogy to the historical perspective present in the practice of all other sciences.
In reaction, Hoyle begins speculating about the issue, upon which Feynman immediately recognizes and remarks that they use different methods of guessing; his own method of guessing is constrained by how Nature actually is (i.e. more in line with the perspective of a physicist), while Hoyle's method is, fueled by his own interests, to how Nature could be (i.e. more in line with the perspective of a mathematician).

Richard did not understand Fred, nor did he realize how much he and Fred were alike when this discussion took place. Richard obviously figured these things out eventually.
