Same, played it on a 1080p home projector in performance mode and it looked fantastic. Only real issues were occasional object pop-in when travelling at speed and some off looking lighting on the character models in outdoor spaces (if you got the camera really close). Stuff like this only really becomes noticeable if you are trying to run it at 1440p and above

Because Rebrith on performance mode renders at basically 1080p (1152p) that's why it looks good, if you tried to play it on a 4k tv it would have to stretch the image which is why it looks horrible.

One benefit of being an older gamer: 30 fps doesn't bother me, at all. Played Rebirth in Fidelity mode and enjoyed it greatly. So now I get to wait for the PC version to really pretty it up and mod it as well. Can't wait.

We grew up on TVs that had near instant response times and S/NES games that would induce slowdown/flickering instead of framedrops which isn't the greatest but at least kept input integrity in check which was really nice (sometimes it even became useful lol). And the VAST majority of the time the games were running at 60 which was important for the large amount of high difficulty/arcade style "twitch games" (wow what an old term) they threw at us. Hell as far as I'm aware Atari games basically had to hit 60fps or else terrible screen issues would occur. It wasn't until we got to the 3D era with Star Fox, Doom, and the entirety of the N64 that consistently running below even 30fps became that common. As a kid I even told my parents I didn't need a N64, something about it just put me off at the time and I couldn't accurately describe why other than "the games look weird" lol I still play my NES and SNES frequently by the way and even still have my Toshiba TV/VCR combo so it's not like I'm only looking back and remembering how these games feel. I don't have a working adapter for my Sears Atari so I can't play that one currently but I'd jump into Asteroids or Centipede occasionally if I could. A lot of modern games can just look AND feel bad to play when they run at lower framerates, even to us that are older gamers lol

Maximilian. Keep in mind, Digital Foudry is not comparing it with the PS5 Pro Enhanced version. There are just comparing the PS5 version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth with the PS5 version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth running on a PS5 Pro raw performance. So that's why the game hasn't changed like pop in and shit. They promised a PS5 Pro Enhanced update that will take more advantage of Ray Tracing and graphical enhancements beyond just raw performance. How much will it be? We don't know, the official update is not out yet, but they promised it will be better.

Actually the infamous Zoom In's in DF videos are because of the YT compression quality and the fact that most of the viewers are on mobile devices. They were talking about it in the video where they look at the PS5 Pro presentation in high quality too. They usually tell (especially Oliver) if something is visible from a typical viewing distance or not. Maybe that's why he mentioned the shimmering, because its visible normally, just didn't say it.

Ideally, the base PS4 could also run the game at 60fps (CoD is 60fps) but may have to drop fidelity to 720p as counterbalance. PS5 Pro means little to nothing if devs choose not optimize which history has shown takes considerable more time, money, and resources; KuSoyny can't afford it rn.

I'm going to be honest, while I was just 4 years old when Final Fantasy VII first came out, I played on my PS2 when I was a teenager and I enjoyed it, I didn't become my favorite game of all time or anything but one thing I really like was that '90s pre-rendered, low poly aesthetic, and I found some Tetsuya Nomura's illustrations for the original name and I loved that '90s anime style. But that's the thing, I don't think Final Fantasy VII was ever meant to look realistic, it had a very obvious '90s anime look, but when Advent Children was released everybody wanted to see a remake of the original game that looked like that, despite the fact that Advent Children's animations hasn't aged all that well. I think the Final Fantasy VII Remake project would have been made much more earlier if they went with a more stylized/cel-shaded look

Max, the problem with using this game as the main comparison point in official marketing is that Sony can’t piss on their on primary product. If they call people’s attention to this level of blurriness coming from Rebirth’s performance mode on PS5, suddenly the PS5 (which they intend to continue selling like hot cakes) starts looking pretty bad, especially to people who have no intention of buying a PS5 Pro. Pretty much every instance, in modern games in my experience, especially UE stuff. It's not that shocking when you realize the AI is trained on basically infinite resolution and trying to replicate that "generatively", raw pixels can't compete with that at high resolutions.

I love FF7, I bought a PS4 solely for FF7 Remake, I bought both physical and digital version of Remake solely so I could play it day one and also have a physical collector edition. I bought a PS5 for Rebirth launch, played FF16 and Rebirth on it. If another console comes out for the third part, I will buy that console to play it. That said, I wouldn't buy a PS5 Pro just to play Rebirth at 60 FPS. In fact, the next time I play it will be on PC. I would rather wait for FPS and fidelity gains, than cash out on a PS5 Pro. The difference between that and when I bought my PS5 is simple: To play the game, you needed a PS5. You don't need a PS5 Pro to play the game. The only time its "worth" buying a console is if the game is exclusive to that console and you absolutely cannot wait for PC ports. None of the above takes cost in as a factor either which the cost of the PS5 Pro is just funny too me. Basically though, what I'm trying to say here is: You want the new PS5? We have PS5 at home.

If Square Enix plans on adding extra graphical bells & whistles to the PC version (i.e. moving folliage, enhanced lighting/reflections, better draw distance) I don't think it would be too big of a task to take some of those features and apply it to a new PS5 Pro mode in the future, if they're already putting in the work.

When Alex from DF was asked if PSSR could be implemented in base PS5 he said that it is definitely possible and nothing could prevent Sony from doing it if it's not to harm PS5Pro sales so i'm expecting either Sony officially updates the ps5 firmware at some point to support a let's say a GPU manageable version of PSSR or the underground scene to find a way and grace us with custom solution

Because its not being recorded STRAIGHT off the console. I am currently playing Rebirth on my base PS5 Slim, and it looks fine. The issue is like max said the small details and pop in. That's it. But pro is fixing those issues. Oh and twitch's bitrate, too. He streams on Twitch and imports and edits the video using FROM Twitch.

I may have had my fill of FF7 rebirth but seeing the improvements the pro version has over the baseline version makes it stand to reason that future games are going to run better than many are thinking. Im betting dollars to donuts that there are marketing plans that say "GTA6 plays at 60fps* only on PS5 Pro" Sony should have moved mountains and backed the ol Brinks truck up to Rockstar to get them to even show a snippet of GTA6 running at 60fps on the pro. Alas we're going to be stuck with guestimations and speculation until we get footage one way or another.

Having gotten a really nice 4K tv specifically for this game, I’ll admit the base performance mode felt great BUT you can really tell that you were sacrificing A LOT of fidelity at that pixel density. If the pro were like even just $150 more than base, this would’ve convinced me because damnit this makes this one singular game look so dang good

I know this video we saw was made as a comparison, but what I'd REALLY like to see are three things: chocobo travel, because it's ten times faster than running around, to check how well the environment renders in that speed; the same for tiny Bronco ocean travel, and finally any JENOVA or dual boss battle from the colosseum (like Malboro and Zu), because I think they are the most particle-heavy fights in the game.
