once upon a time, 18+ men vomited over 24 hours fighting this back when 75 was the cap

Mohannad Al-Shareef Your numbers are a bit off. As there were only 18 people and not all of them got ill it was probably only 9 or less and they only spent 18 hours on it before quitting.

Your clarification did not change anything actually, 9 people got ill. Thats ALOT.

You mean 18+ Losers vomited over 24 hours fighting this collection of pixels. Jesus. That's 18 hours they could of spent working. Or 18 hours fucking some tight pussy. This is hardly a proud achievement of "Men". This is an achievement of losers or boys or both.

So, we've all heard the story about the aborted 18+ hour fight with this thing. My question is, how did that even happen? I'm not well versed in FFXI's gameplay mechanics, but the way I see it, A: The mechanics of the fight were horribly broken, B: The party in question was doing something very, very wrong during the fight, or C: some combination of A and B. If anyone knows for sure, I'm dying to find out.

I don't know how I happened upon this comment. Just feeling nostalgic, I guess. Anyway, I was part of the group that spawned the first Pandemonium Warden ever. We had TONS of people there watching and wanting to help. One of the main problems was that it took us FOREVER just to kill the first form, and then he immediately respawned as a different form. The adds might not seem like much in this video but at that time they were enough to make it very tough for someone to tank. It wasn't feasible to control all of those adds. It was basically chaos. He ended up despawning just because we had been fighting him for hours and everyone had deleveled from 75 down to 71 or so from dying so much. Nobody knew how many forms he had at that time, and you can only delevel so much before you're completely useless to the fight. But yeah, it took hours just to beat the first form, and you can see in this video how many forms there were. FFXI is known for intense difficulty, and that's why we miss it. It was the type of game where you had to dedicate your life to it just to be even slightly competitive. It wasn't rare to see people playing 12-16 hours a day. Extra trivia: When we first tried to spawn him, we did it at the wrong area, which spawned a level one goblin named ATNM Test and we lost our key item that took forever to get!

ALSO! He was waaaay harder. In response to the 18+ hour fight, Square Enix nerfed the hell out of the difficulty and put a time limit of 2 hours on him. If he's not defeated within 2 hours, he will despawn.

@TripleHate33 I know this is a late reply but if its still of interest I'll try to shed some light and clear a few things up, although Ryukenshin's article should still be floating around the internet describing their experience. Firstly, the group was a collection of very highly skilled and superbly geared players. The top weapons in XI would take between a few months and a few years to build depending on your available finance, and the group had a half dozen people with these among them - including some of the very strongest min-max options. They prepared as thoroughly as could be expected for a fight they had not previously attempted, using second hand - albeit reliable - information. They had not intended or expected to take even half that time, but it was fairly remarkably done. They had spent a number of weeks building the set to spawn the boss and during this, also using this time to build their strategy. The fight itself consisted of a boss that form changed, taking on the appearance of I think 16? other bosses from the same expansion, many of which were considered mid-top tier endgame targets in their own right, and these were then stronger. Bosses with mechanics locked to
