@@koxsuper5Definitely not true, though some of these are more dated names. I usually hear “point blank AoE” and “donut” more often than “chariot” and “dynamo” I definitely hear “protean” more than “cone” because there’s a bunch of different types of cones many of which are not proteans. The additional point if protean is that they are typically baited on multiple characters and go off all at once, which is why we tend to use clock spots for those.

These terms are generally only used in high end content, so it's fine if the average person won't know them. Referring to a specific mechanic means there's more clarity. For instance, "spread" is a very ambiguous term and it might not be clear as to what that means exactly. Group spreads out so you don't hit each other with AoE's, spread out to clock positions because it's a protean wave, or spread out from the boss itself? Just saying "chariot" instantly tells you exactly what the mechanic is as long as you know the term.

@ugxsan
@ugxsan 4 ай бұрын
Protean is a specific kind of baited cone. People don’t call it that unless it’s baited on multiple players all of which go off at the same time, usually resulting in the players using clock spots which usually not a mechanic, it’s a position. Definitely don’t here dynamo used much and basically never chariot but it’s still good to know in case you hear that in a guide some time.

No need for the hate, these are still terms that will get tossed around in certain raiding circles. Isn’t it better to know an alternate name for a mechanic rather than to not know if at all? Dynamo/chariot are originally from the corresponding attacks from the ARR raids, Shiva is originally from the primal, etc - and some raiders have just stuck to these names to describe mechanics easily out of habit.
@holmesholmes.8784

Exactly, it’s not even that hard to remember. Nobody need to use them, but knowing them helps getting through communication easier, and if they’re interested in why it’s named as such then they can ask about it. A lot of them saying they never heard of it as if they’re the only person in the world, or just plainly disliking it because they don’t understand and fear that they had to memorize something so easily memorized and trivial

While older terms, yes, these were used a lot back in the day. Not as much anymore, but they arent non-existant like some comments are implying. Still applicable to bosses today though since SE likes to recycle mechanics but just call them something different. Limit Cut is a great example of this. Anything with 1-8 and dashes a lot of players just like to call "limit cut", even if thats not what the ability the boss is casting is called whatsoever. All these terms originate from older bosses, so you hear mostly older raiders say these things. Especially ones who do ultimates. At the end of the day, in/out, donut/dynamo, spread/protean, whatever. It all works. Just baffled me these comments were saying these terms never existed and arent used today at all when that is not true. I just cleared all the ultimates and these terms were used during UCOB and TEA.

@@holmesholmes.8784Wild Charge is a baited Line AoE that requires other players to stand in front of the targeted player to soak damage so the targeted player doesn’t die. Enumeration is a stack that requires a specified number of players to resolve, as too many or too few will result in a wipe. This is different from a stack where the more players you can have in the stack without overlapping stacks, the better. It’s also different from a double or triple tank buster because once again, there’s no “too many” for those, it’s just painful enough to kill non-tanks.

Seems like most of the comments are conflating protean with cone because of the shape. A cone aoe is just that, a cone aoe. A protean, however, is something that directly targets the player and cannot be avoided. These mechanics are similar in shape but distinctly different mechanics that oftentimes are used together, such as in Hades EX and Living Liquid TEA.

I truly do love how the language of FF14 has evolved. Because they were the attacks or bosses that introduced the mechanic, even something as simple as a circle radiating from the boss has a unique name that would confuse players as soon as a year into the game's release. And while that name has stuck around, mostly from veterans passing it down via word of mouth, it's mostly been replaced by the overwhelming majority of players who simply lack the context to understand the original name. Humans and language are simply fascinating.

I can say as a player who came in during Endwalker, that I developed my own parlance for these as: 'out', 'in', 'Shiva' without learning from someone else. There's clearly lots of folks who came to the same conclusion. These feel like the natural names. Of course, whatever the flip Protea is on about. I guess you might as well call it a narrow cleave marker, because it's like 1/4 or half the size of like a Sepirot or Diabolos Hollow cleave marker.

Using Chariot or Dynamo is bad because it adds an indirection towards resolving your thought : Upon hearing the term, you have to think which boss this is a reference to and what shape the attack had, precious milliseconds wasted. Meanwhile, Circle and Donut get straight to the point of naming the actual shape. As a counter example : When additional monsters spawn, do you say "Scurvy Dogs" in reference to the first dungeon boss you ever encounter that summons adds, so everyone should know the reference? No, you use a common term "add", as in "additional monster", without requiring a reference.

Never used Shiva before, although if I heard someone say it id probably end up using it lol. Other than that, these are pretty fundamental in describing mechanics but i wouldnt use then as acrual calls (other than proteans). When doing calls you want it to be as short as possible and directed towards movement, so in my experience in/out is an overall smoother call. Using Nael as an example, "She'll say a voice line and do either a dynamo or chariot" but come that point in the pull, I'll just call "in/out". Either way, learning new terminology is always helpful.

Oh right, to explain Bane, if Sothe would NOT kill when Bane procs (ignore DR for now), he instead deals 99% of the opponents hp as damage every time it procs, ignoring DR. If he would kill, then it just ups damage by being a slightly worse Luna. So in the trailer when he fought Fedel, he deals exactly 44 ho damage each time he hits, cause he wouldn't one tap her when Bane procced (somehow, don't ask me how a cureent gen unit misses that) This means Bane is slightly terrifying, cause as long as Sothe fails to kill, he can just bring you down to 1 HP for basically free, excluding Scowl. Y'all have fun with that, I'm going hide in a corner

I've also seen Shiva Circles refer to the reverse: Where circles appear around the edge and spiral into the middle. IIRC Titania has this variation.

I often hear proteans called earthshakers, too. There's a lot of terminology like cards, intercards, and clock spots which new raiders always gotta learn. Cards means cardinal directions (N, S, E, and W) and intercards is intercardinal directions (NE, SE, NW, and SW). When a raid leader yells cards, they don't mean yugioh lol. Clock spots means both cards AND intercards, for a total of 8 positions. There's also healer stacks which is when the party separates into 2 light parties, and role stacks which is 3 groups based on tank, healers, dps. Sometimes its support/dps stacks, which is 2 tanks 2 healers in one group and 4 dps in another group.

To all those nay-sayers: I don't even raid and I'm familiar with all these terms. They're used all the time, from Realm Reborn to Dawntrail. Makes a lot of sense to say "followed by chariot" rather than "followed by an out." If I didnt know any better, I'd say you're all French players. Or German.

I get everyone complaining about old words, but like... These are still castbars. If you don't know what a boss is casting, and it uses some of these words, you can know what they are and this video also gives you a history lesson! Come on guys lmao. (Also proteans and cones can be slightly different terms in raiding. Bc proteans are specific small cones from the boss solved with clock positions. Compare nado cones from P3S, which are not proteans.)

There's a difference between using the term the game is putting right in front of you in the current fight, or even the same raid tier, vs using terms from fights multiple years old when descriptive generalized callouts are avalible. Especially for ones like Protean and Limit Break, because almost _nothing_ people have used those callout for since the origional fights actually work like they did.

Everyone in the comments saying "THIS IS DUMB JUST SAY THIS" as though all callouts aren't valid if they work for you. Say Dynamo or Donut. If your group understands, what does it matter? Quit invalidating other peoples' callouts just because you haven't yet been in a group that used them. My group started Coil. I hear Dynamo/Chariot like 50 times a week.
