THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS INTRO!!! GNB is my first tank class and I'm a little nervous about it. I've been playing FFXIV for 6 years but have only ever played my main story class, DRG. thanks! this guide was great. I rolled a brand new GNB last night but had no idea what any of my attacks did. I set my bars up kinda like you did, and then went through a few quests to test it out. hopped into my first dungeon after that and it went great! I accidentally used the supercollider spell when I was low, but the healer was focusing me with some mega heals as I did it, so it worked out. I miss my WAR self heals but this is way more fun so far

I finally put down wow. I'm buying a ps4 today. Skill placement is very underrated. For example in wow on my paladin, wings are my mouse button 2, my big dps cooldowns. On my warrior? Recklessness was MB2. Muscle memory is key. Glad you mentioned it. I'm really looking forward to playing 14.

lol doing another guide for one of my mains. just my luck! when you do the full guide i HIGHLY recommend covering the different openers. The Early Bloodfest Opener and the single/double weave openers. the Early BF opener is better when there are few raid buffs in your party. while the single and double weave openers are better for personal DPS. u sure about where u put continuation? it's a VITAL oGCD that you use in between your cartridge combo. I recommend putting danger zone/blasting zone, where you have Gnashing fang since it's a 30 second cool down while gnashing fang is 60 seconds. then put gnashing fang combo on your R2+ B,A, and Y. with Continuation on R2+X. that way your holding down the same button for your entire gnashing fang combo. (except maybe other ogcds like boow shock and rough divide). if u were on mouse and keyboard i'd recommend your normal combo on 1,2,3, with Danger/Blasting zone on 4. and Shift 1,2,3 for your Gnashing Fang combo, and Continuation on Shift+4

@@Work2Game Gunbreaker was my first tank to 80 and I would highly recommend Gunbreaker to anybody. Not only am I a FF8 fanboy, it is also a fun burst dps Tank. The one tank to make me enjoy SHB tanking.

I would of preferred you to wait till level 80 to release a controller layout guide as your opinion could change. You double weave so much during your No Mercy which when combined with defensive cooldowns and boss movement can get pretty hectic for the Gunbreaker so button positioning is very important. At level 60 with the lack of Continuation you don't see this yet.

i love your guides guys and your podcast but i feel you may change your mind down the road for your placement of the gnashing fang combo because i goes from a 3 hit combo to a 6 hit combo with continuation meaning when you get it you are going to hiting your right trigger lik crazy just to get it to work with this setup.

Have you ever tried the cross hot bar where you can hold R2 then hold L2 to use the right side of the second hot bar. And hold L2 then hold R2 to use the left side of the second hot bar?

I avoid the D-pad issue using a steam controller action layer that, when I press any trigger, turns button pad into D-pad and right track pad into button pad. In that way I can input commands while running around with the left track pad.

You left out a step, what set are you using for the actions in the upper crossbar where you have Arm's Length, Interject and Shirk on the left the others on the right?

As a gunbreaker, NEVER use superbolide in a dungeon! Healers will hate you for it. I know because when I level my healers I hate Gunbreakers tank invulnerability. Made me think of quitting healing due to frustration. Good work Brian!

I understand the sentiment, but here's my perspective. It's the tank's responsibility to use their cooldowns if they are choosing to do a giant pull so therefore if they drop, but don't use their Superbolide or other invulnerability skills (invul for short) it's the tank's fault for not accounting for ping or whatever, not the healer. That's my rationale so I don't feel frustrated whenever I tank goes down. However with the GNB in particular it's invul is actually a lot better than you think because it makes the character immune to damage just like the PLD. Sure the GNB goes to 1HP, but it literally doesn't matter because all healing during that window won't be countered enemy damage. THE GNB should be holding their Aurora for their invul phase because they'll receive full benefit until the Superbolide where's off. So whenever I see a GNB's HP suddenly hit 1HP (usually associated with a marco chime) I just think "it's free real estate." For me personally I think the issue comes later when the invul where's off because all the adds are still alive meaning everyone has to do their jobs correctly without any of the invul cheese. Tank's gotta makes sure cooldowns are still being used after invul, dps have to be doing their damage, and the healer have to be sure they have the emergency abilities still up such as Benediction or Swiftcast to ensure the tanks survival.

If you're using it at the right time (close to dying), it's really not that bad. As long as the healer knows what to expect. I feel it's pretty nice to use for huge pulls.

If I am using superbolide it’s because I’m not going to get the heals I need in time to survive, if you don’t want a tank to use it then do not leave them in a position where they have to

Work To Game I do the same thing on my warrior and other classes too where my single target combo is on the right side and the aoe combo is on the left. Then all my big cds on the L2+R2 for each class. I changed R3 from first person zoom to sprint

I would disagree with the right side d pad buttons for your combo moves you want to keep your thumb on the left stick so you can hit and move at same time dodging does without interrupting your long six button combo.

Uhmm, my issue with the controller is, how can you move when you are doing combos on the left side of each crossbar.....i tried something similar to your setting, and if I can't move properly during gnashing fang combo, and I need to time to move between gcds and that is not a problem while I use keyboard and mouse.

You can’t, you’ll need to drop them into the cross hotbar that’s acting like the shortcut for it. If you need more examples check out my ultimate controller guide :)

I want to love Gunbreaker because I love tanking and Squall is my favorite character of all time, but Continuation forces moments of losing DPS when you have to Provoke/tank CD because you already have to double weave DPS OGCDs all the time. I hate it. PLD/WAR/DRK are so much better designed because of this. If you "save" your DPS OGCDs or use tank OGCDs instead as you have to, they mess up your No Mercy window so much that it destroys your DPS. I hate it.
