Hot tip: While you can sheath/unsheath your weapon by pressing the left stick, this is not ideal, as it doesn't work if you have something targeted (it'll activate lock-on targeting instead, as shown here in Part 3). You can however still sheath/unsheath your weapon while targeting (and when not ofc), by clicking LB+RB (in that order).

I was m/kb only for a long time. Then my PC took a dump and I was tired of rebuilding it so I bought a PS4 Pro. I plugged my mouse and KB in only to find there was nasty input lag on both so I gave controller a shot. After a couple of days of playing/tweaking my controls i was shocked to find how amazing the controller implementation is for FF14. Fast forward 6 months Sony did a system update and now my mouse and kb have no issues. But i’m not going back. That’s how awesome the controller is for FF14.

The hardest thing is exercising your muscle memory. This is so very true for me who has been playing mmorpg for more than 10 years on KBM. The day I bought and tried Controller, I feel like I was playing mmo for the first time back decades ago, like for real. The only thing I mastered was only movement and camera. Once I got into the fights, dungeons, raids, HOLYSHIT I felt like hell was about to break loose, keep forgetting the keybind / pressing the wrong buttons so many times, and I mained healer, so yeah. The most mistakes I’ve made was between Bumpers (left right) switched with face and direction buttons. I played solid 1 week (but only around 2-3 hours per day) for me to FINALLY get used to it.

I've been playing FFXIV for 6 years on PS4. Recently, I was able to build my gaming PC and started playing final on PC as well. I have been STRUGGLING to play on KB/M. I have an mmo mouse and have put in hours of practice, but I just can not get comfortable with it. I'm a hotmess with KB/M. I've decided that I'll be moving back to my controller so that I'm actually useful to my party again. It's good to see that there are so many people that use controller on PC. I almost felt embarrassed and like I was "giving up" on playing the game properly on KB/M. Thanks for your video. It and reading the comments have definitely helped me feel better.

I want to say thank you so much for these guides! You guys are awesome! I just started playing a little over a month ago and I was clueless on a lot of this stuff. Especially adding more hot bars. This guide really helped me and makes my dps job so much easier. The only thing that I don’t understand is macros and if they are something I should be using as a dps. But keep doing what you guys are doing!!
@katrinkpunkt5 жыл бұрын
Not sure if still needed, but you should never use macros to string for example combos, since macros use a fixed time to execute, while when pressing you can "queue" skills, allowing you to execute them directly after each other. So when you're repeatedly pressing a button while the global cooldown is still running, your game will recognize what you wanna do next and execute it instantly. A macro will delay your global cooldown and significantly lower your dps. However, there are macros that are helpful with targeting. For example I have macros for my Aetherial Manipulation to certain party members, so I don't have to go through the party list to target them. I know a lot of dragoons do the same for their second eye. Also it can be helpful to target ground aoes (not sure if any dps has any left though :') )

Just so people know on controller it is possible to fit every ability(including role actions) on 2 hotbars for most classes. The only class I think that has some extra spots needed is paladin, but if you drop some of the stun abilities(shield bash and the role action stun it works). This way you only have to deal with the cross hotbar L2+R2 or R2+L2(which feels really natural in my opinion) instead of having to fiddle with double tapping L2 or R2 on a 3rd hotbar
@Revz8bit4 жыл бұрын
I play a PLD and have a heavy macro use setup on controller. With macros, I was able to get most actions on the first cross hotbar. The 2nd bar is for only 4 skills (Iron Will, Limit break, Shrink, Hallowed ground). The rest of the 2nd bar is for group/raid things, such as marking, raid calls, etc. Was a fun challenge to tackle and it plays really good for me now :)

This is a really great vid on controllers - I just started with FF and wanted to start off using a controller on my PC. It's hard to start with but I can see it will work well when using it for combos. Thanks for taking the time to make these

I've been playing with mouse and keyboard for 3 years and now I'm trying to learn to play with a controller. It's a nightmare. I think I've watched this video three times already. Thanks for posting it.

@@Work2Game perhaps I missed how you are able to cycle to your adjacent hot bars quickly, maybe you could write it out for me? If it's a lot, don't sweat it. I've just been looking for a way to optimize my controller.

Those are just a double tap of the right or left trigger and I have it setup to return to the main hotbar after input thus I put buffs or off the globals on there so it feels smoother :)

My friend convinced me to use controller, and he said the same thing as you. That when playing long game sessions, controllers are a must! Also, when playing on a controller, it’s easier to just lean back and chill:D

Love this video. FF14 is the only PC game I use a controller with, I started out with FF11 on PS and when I made the switch to the PC I found that I couldn't give up my controller for this game. its just so much smoother to me than KB/M. Will you be doing a controller guide for DRG in Shadowbringers?

As a new player, this has really helped out immediately upon starting the game. The big benefit being that one learns to use it immediately and getting the muscle memory early on, instead of remapping a keypad mid-game (say, like that OTHER mmo....).

First time playing a MMO with a controller and this video will help me a lot. Thanks!

@@Work2Game Yeah I'm really enjoying the game so far (it's been a long time since i played a MMO). I have a question, how can you assign skill to menus like "Double tap L2/R2", Top Hotbar or even L2+R2 and vice versa? Are those hotbars for something different?

I no longer have a PC so I will be playing with a Ps4. I am a healer so I need to get confident in healing dungeons. So far I am going to keep doing the first dungeon and get comfortable with my controller before I move onto hard dungeons. I hope this guide will help me setup my controller so I dont panic trying to find something, while everyone dies in the process. TY for sharing

Thank you for this video mate, there's a lot of depth to the controller setup and it was honestly confusing without this. Running dungeons and being accidentally hard targetted onto another player was embarrassing :D

We do that by job. Already published several for this expansion and more on are their way. :) Check the controller guide playlist if you've missed any of them. :)

a generally good idea is to keep action skills off the dpad because using them requires your left thumb which takes it off the stick used for movement. Example: my 1-2-3 tank combo/attack skills are on the X O Square and triangle buttons so i don’t sacrifice movement to use skills.

Great guide, used to play on pc but because of circumstances needed to switch to Ps4, took me a while to get used to the Controller but thanks to your clear and informational guide targeting just became a lot easier, also recomend saying that the L3 & R3 can me customized with a Macro to save up slots (i use them for sprint and mount, but can also be used for some quick attacks)
