You don't have to rebind a and d to strafe. Just change movement type to legacy. That's probably what you really want instead of rebinding.

If you have a mouse with two side buttons, change them to CTRL and ALT, it'll allow for more easy use of CTRL + Key or ALT + Key combos without being a hindrance.

@@dango2917 Depends on the mouse youre using. Most mouses come with a software app. Mine is razer so I use razer synapse. Then all you do is change the side buttons to function like a keyboard button.

@@byteresistor You lose keybinds if you don't rebind your modifier keys to M4/M5. Either way, the only thing it really changes is which hand you're using for modifier keys, but most people just think it's so big brain...

Quickly glancing at the comments it seems like I am not the first to say that you should really try using the keys Z / X / C / V / F / G for hotkeys. They are all around the W / A / S / D keys which makes them all very accessible. Another thing I suggest doing is, if you have access to a gaming mouse with more than 1 side button (like the one you have that has 2 buttons on the side) you can bind SHIFT and CONTROL to those two side buttons. This way you don't have to stretch your hand across your keyboard to hit modifier keys, you use a completely different hand for the modifier key and I have found that for me it makes it very comfortable. I always find it odd to use an extra key on the side of your mouse for only 1 bind, why not make more use out of it? Seriously try it and let me know how it goes for you!

Anyone who is using mouse keys for binds is also using modifiers for those keys, so a minimum of 4 binds per key. If you bind modifiers to your only 2 mouse keys, you're losing 8 easily accessible binds for 2 keyboard keys, which is never better unless you literally cannot hit two keys at the same time.

I have an actual bar set for just movement abilities between all classes. That include charges/mounts/disengages/sprint/peloton/ teleport and there all special key binds that don’t interfere with the rest of my keybinds usually shift spacebar/ shift W/S once you get that set up, it becomes universal and it makes movement so much easier.

one thing i kept saying while you was showing off your layout "It makes sense!" my typical layout i have only for one class and isnt that universal (still building it from swapping from ps4 to pc) but you gave a really good example on what i can edit it to.

I've got a similar philosophy to this, but instead of 12345 / QERTY I do three 4x3 grids (neutral -> shift -> ctrl) with the layout: １ ２ ３ ４ Ｑ Ｅ Ｒ Ｔ Ｚ Ｃ Ｖ Ｆ This is way less stretching, it allows your fingers to stay more localized to WASD, utilizing ZCV down below and F right next to it. Then I have a 3x4 grid to the left with all my utility stuff like mount summon, sprint, limit break, etc. all with alt keys, with the layout: １ ２ ３ Ｑ Ｗ Ｅ Ａ Ｓ Ｄ Ｚ Ｘ Ｃ so I keep sprint on Alt+W since that's my forward key anyway, mount on Alt+Q, Alt+2 for a Follow Tank macro I set up, etc. I find it's super useful, and worth trying out as an alternate layout with the same basic philosophy applied

This was very helpful as a beginner playing an MMO with keyboard and mouse! I am used to play with controller since Final Fantasy 11. I play all Final Fantasy 14 with controller and a few keybinds but I wanted to learn how to use keyboard for times when the controller dies while waiting for replacement to arrive. And yeah, first thing everyone should do is unbind A and D from turn left and right and make A and D to Strafe left and right. Force yourself to turn with your mouse. And it'll free up Q and E for you

Though it's a slightly older video of yours, I wanna comment my setup for people with little to no dexterity such as I. I set 3 hotbars to a 4 by 3 grid, and set the keybinds to an appropriately shaped rectangle on my keyboard, 1 in the upper left corner and f on the bottom right. Shift and control are then used to activate skills on the 2nd and 3rd hotbar respectively. I do this because all of these keys are very close to WASD, and I have unbound arrow icons in the hotbar to represent WASD, also acting as a visual reference to where the keys would be relative to my fingers. This does mean that I only have 8 keys per hotbar(totalling 24), but this helps because I don't have great fine motor skills as a result of having ASD. This also makes me excitable, meaning that not only can I not reach some keys, but I easily forget what skills go where when any action happens. The combination of a visual reference plus a short reach on the keyboard to activate skills makes the game much more accessible to me. Thanks for helping me learn how to set this up, and hopefully this can help people with similar issues. God bless yall!

I find it really useful to utilize the z x c v b f g keys since they're all easily reachable from WASD for certain cooldowns. Really great for when you have certain skills you use often enough but don't have space for and don't want a modifier key to pop them. Especially useful in panic moments. I use my F keys for big cooldowns and self buffs I use often like lucid dreaming or tank buffs etc.

As someone will tiny hands, use every button you can reach. Do you (like me) rest your pinky finger on the shift naturally while using wasd? Then use that key as double click key-binds ( shift +1, shift +2, etc) I can’t reach the 4 key without picking up my hand off wasd (yes, I mentioned I have small hands for a reason.) so I use directional movement rather than default, this frees up q and e for keybinds, I also use alt as a double key bind button. So 1-3, all buttons on the left side, and shift + alt means that even though I have small hands, I have 36 combative key binds and 4 shared keybinds. (Also don’t be afraid to keybind w a s or d, I use shift+ w a s d, and alt+ w a s d for combat keybinds.)

I bind Z,X,C,V,B although B won't get used much. And then Shift modifying all those is super convenient to hit. SHIFT B I always set open Inventory, that's an old carry over from WoW and "open all bags". And Shift E is always Sprint. Another carry over from Rogue in WoW Edit: and I always have "toggle AutoRun" bound to CTRL R

I personaly use qerfzxcv (all the buttons around wasd) as my skill actions and shift, ctrl for modifier on my thumb you might need a fourth bar depending on the job but everything is right next to your fingers.

I thing I like doing for unused hotbars is use the combo of hiding unassigned slots, maximizing the size of the hotbar, and putting all of the important gcds and stuff I need to press to be optimal and basically make my own weakauras for ffxiv.

I've also got a 3rd side thumb button. Was thinking about adding auto-run, some kind of heal, and maybe teleport onto the mouse. Also, I was already gonna reassign Q and D to strafe. Might be because of my keyboard, but I find CTRL modifiers to be the easiest. All I need to do is rest my wrist on CTRL whenever I need it. But it really wouldn't work on a keyboard with very flat keys, or laptops 🤔 It's very nice how accesible CTRL is for me though

Personally I set up my movement to move like a regular game, was S isn't backpedal but rather turns my character. It made being on KBM so much more tolerable for me as a kbm player

with a per key rgb keyboard, i like to set my hotbar keys to a different color as well (not that im often looking at it). when i reorganize, i might make different rows change colors as well, or have modifiers change the color of the hotbar keys

Looking back on the dragoon skills is weird! Blood of the dragon became a trait instead of an action, so to try out this layout Ill have to replace it w something.
