my guy ended up being a Qestir because I just hit the random name buttion until I got something I thought sounded cool, I didn't know about the tribal lore then and just assumed the last names were just random "Fantasy Mongolia" words until much later. One thing to know about the Hotgo: the Xaela involved in the Alexander questline/raid series are from that Tribe, and their lore is tied to it, which is kinda funny that the Dotharl specifically wiped them out if you know about their own lore.

For the Dotharl being so aggressive, and violent they welcome people into their fold, a few bits of Npc dialogue say you can gladly drink at their oasis, just as long as you don't intend them harm. Heck, you can even question and mock their beliefs in their camo to their faces and they won't attack you over it, as we saw in the MSQ. Also one of the only tribes to actively help the warrior of light~

it's also pretty cool that their philosophy has basically erased the concept of gender roles. Sadu in her previous life was a man, one of the male warriors from the sidequests you can take around their camp was a woman before, and so on, and that has absolutely zero bearing in how they see each other or live their lives. Sadu is just Sadu, whether she's male or female is just a sidenote on her current incarnation. Love the Dotharl, even though they're uh... a little insane lol

While the Xaela tribes are obviously modeled after the Steppe tribes of Eurasia, our real world tribes were no less varied. For example, Huns would tie bands around newborns’ skulls to shape them into a very sloped forehead, making them appear almost alien. Mongolian women were only permitted to marry after slaying an enemy in battle, and could ride horses and use bows with such supremacy that they would fire their bows from the side of the horse, underneath its belly, using her legs to hold onto the horse and using its body to block return fire. The Amazonian legends were likely based upon Greek interactions with the Scythian tribes of the steppe. There were also tribes that were made up entirely of women. They would raid and pillage, then once a year all the fertile women would seek out the strongest men from surrounding tribes, taking turns mating with each man, believing the strongest man out of these would impregnate them. These women also would just drop male infants in the wilderness.

sadly there isn't a lot of information on the Raen as far as I know. They either live in isolation - in which case the only ones we have any real amount of knowledge of would be those of Sui-no-Sato (ironic, as they should be effectively the most isolated of them all lore-wise, but thanks the the WoL making friends in strange places we end up meeting them personally before any other isolated tribe..), or they end up just integrating into different societies such as Doma, Kugane, and Radz-at-Han, in which case the information would be mostly on those societies in general rather than the Raen specifically. The Xaela and the Seekers of the Sun are kind of unique in that way - they're the only ones who retain their own unique cultures to such a degree, while all other races, and even their own cousin sub-species, end up integrating with the nations and cultures they reside with. Maybe the Keepers of the Moon retain more of their ancient culture than I am aware of, but we have almost no information on them save that most reside in the Shroud, maintain their matriarchal family structures, are quite reclusive even for Gridanian standards (no doubt due in part to the discrimination they suffer as "outsiders"), and make up no small amount of the poacher population (not to sound like a... well, like a typical Gridanian, but both of the poacher gangs we can fight in the South Shroud are made up of Keepers and Duskwights in their majority, so it is a known fact that many end up joining that lifestyle. Though we know from a few of the Postmoogle quests that this is often not by choice)

Raen that do not live in isolation are more cosmopolitan, with groups of Raen settling in Hingashi, Thavnair and Wherlyt, in terms of their culture, they tend to adopt the culture of the region they've settled, in terms of nomenclature: Raen who settled in Hingashi and the Ruby Sea tend of have Japanese given names, Raen who settled in Thavnair have Indian/Sri Lankan names and Raen who settled in Wherlyt have European names. Otherwise, despite player demographics, It's actually incredibly rare to see any Au Ra, generally, west of Wherlyt, similarly it's incredibly rare to see any Miqo'te in Othard

So I have a theory that the Mol's "Elder Gods" are elementals similar to those of the Shroud. The Pillars of Nhama are near the Mol camp, and those are basically a huge allagan aether syphon that creates a massive confluence of aether. So I think it's safe to assume the elementals in the mountains and steppe near the Pillars are stronger than your average sprite (though still vastly weaker than the Shroud's Elementals, which would explain why the extent of their influence on the Mol being whispers and guidance rather than the more.. direct action the Shroud's Elementals are known to take). Combine these more powerful Elementals with the Au Ra's increased sensory perception from their horns, and it's possible that the Mol have evolved a particular mutation that makes some of them able to use their horns' extra perception abilities to listen to the faint whispers of these slightly stronger elementals, just like how the Padjal's horns grant Hearers the ability to perceive the shift in aether from the Elementals. Imagine the ancestors of the Mol living in close proximity to an unusually massive confluence of aether, and because of that evolving a trait that makes their horns not only able to sense shifts in air pressure and vibration, but also shifts in the local aether, and they start hearing these faint whispers and voices that, unbeknownst to them, come from the faint, fumbling intelligences of the elementals forming in the area, who are more powerful than usual for the Steppe due to that same confluence, and interpreting these whispers as words of spirits. At first, perhaps the whispers are nothing more than the fleeting thoughts of these beings, and don't make much sense, the few that hear them potentially even being regarded with suspicion or fear. But then perhaps there's some sort of natural disaster - a particularly violent storm, an earthquake, a rampaging beast, a drought, etc - that the elementals can perceive ahead of time due to sensing changes in the aether prior to the disaster arriving at the doorstep of the Mol. One of these mistrusted outcasts can hear the elementals fretting over this disaster, as the imbalance of aether upsets them, and warns their tribe, saving lives. From here, they begin to accept these "hearers" and pay more attention to the whispers, and every now and then something good comes out of it. The elementals in turn begin to sense that their thoughts influence these people, and the people's actions affect the aether in turn. They start to tell them which areas are overgrown and need to be grazed on by their sheep herds in order to balance the aether, or to hunt a specific kind of animal if their numbers are growing a bit too much for their liking. Over the centuries, this evolves into the culture we see today, with them regarding these spirits that offered guidance to their people as gods of eld, spirits of the land apart from the Dusk Mother and Dawn Father, and deferring to them on almost all things.
@_sidereal
@_sidereal Жыл бұрын
I'm interested in this part of the lore too, because my character is a Xaela of the Mol tribe. Your theory of their gods being nature spirits comparable to the elementals of the shroud makes sense. The other possibility I've heard is that they are connected to the Kami that the Domans believe in. Compared to the Twelve, who are a clearly defined pantheon, the Kami seem more ambiguous. They can be anything from legendary beasts to personifications of nature, and it's unknown how many of them exist. I've also always wondered how Cirina's grandmother, Temulun, was able to sense so much about the WoL. She even foreshadowed things about us (Azem) that we didn't know at the time. It means that either the Mol's gods knew about this and relayed the information to Temulun, or she has an ability similar to the echo.
@marcog.verbruggen674
@marcog.verbruggen674 Жыл бұрын
@@_sidereal That's a good question, I completely forgot about Temulun's insight and gift for prophesy, somehow... My bet would be on the Echo, as you suggested. We know in the lore that it's not uncommon for those with the Blessing of Light and/or the Echo to be regarded as heroes, seers, prophets and messiahs, so if a member of a highly spiritual tribe with little contact with the outside world, in a place where the gift is already rarer and less understood than in Eorzea, were to possess it, It would be easy for it to be misconstrued as a prophetic gift from their gods. As for the kami, as you said, it seems to be almost like a catch-all term for anything they consider divine. Legendary deities akin to the Twelve are amongst the most important ones, but auspices, primals and spirits of the land (which, likely, is just another, less aetherologically inclined, term for an elemental - not necessarily Shroud-type Elementals or the weaker ones that i posit the Mol commune with, but elementals in general as described by our dear professor Synodic in his lecture on these beings) all seem to be regarded as "kami", and even the spirits of ancestors can sometimes be revered in this divine form. While the Twelve are clearly a defined and enduring pantheon with *ancient* roots, and perhaps linked to actual entities from the real history of the star (i'm just about done with EW, so haven't reached the alliance raids yet, I assume they clear up their origins and lore but know nothing about it), the kami seem to be more of religious entities in the traditional sense - phenomena and beings interpreted as divine, but whose nature and origins is quite varied. I think it doubtless that a Doman learning of the Mol's Elder Gods would regard them as kami, and vice versa, and perhaps many of the kami are also some kind of elemental. Curiously, despite Eorzea's abundance of such beings supposedly resulting from a much more aether-rich environment overall, Othard and Ilsabard both display the presence of many elemental beings from sprites to greater entities, which we can come across and even be attacked by in those lands, so perhaps certain specific areas of these continents have a comparable aether density to Eorzea's, which would further explain these divine land spirits in Doma and the Steppes. I would imagine these hotspots are intersections of aether currents, such as those that were exploited in the Empty of the First to revive its stagnant aether, which would imply Eorzea's aetheric characteristics are the result of it being one massive clump of aether currents and intersections..

Been wanting to replay the MSQ from the start and decided to make an RP character to do so with so I made a Xaela from the Buduga tribe. In my headcanon, the tribe being all male is due them being something of a religious cult that views themselves as ritually married to the Dawn Mother and so they are forbidden to lie with any woman as that would be commiting adultery against their goddess. Mine was a shaman who was able to sense aether, and travelled west after first witnessing the fall of Dalamud to the west, and the subsequent freeing of Bahamut and summoning of the Twelve. He arrived in Eorzea to learn of these powerful spirits and bring the knowledge back to the tribe.

Why do people call their characters toons? It sounds like they come from Roger Rabbit.
@mikoto7693
@mikoto7693 Жыл бұрын
@@hippiechick73 I’m not fully sure, but I’ve heard the term used in other MMOs. My best educated guess is that the term “toon” might come from WoW. It the only other MMO big enough for some of its terns to be used by players in multiple other MMOs. I’m curious now. Going to look it up.
@mikoto7693
@mikoto7693 Жыл бұрын
So apparently toons was made popular by usage in WoW, but predates it, even before Ultima Online or EverQuest. Apparently the very first customisable avatars were 2D and looked like cartoon characters. Hence shortening the name kept happening leading to avatars or your player character being referred to as your “toon.” Now while I’m just about old enough to be oldschool to call the player character “toons” I didn’t start playing MMOs until I discovered FF11 back when Rise of Zilart and Chains of Promathia were out but quite a bit before Treasures of Aht Urghan was released. I left shortly after the three Abyssea mini expansions changed the game beyond recognition for me. I did spend a long time playing Star Trek Online and still return to it from time to time. I did play ESO a fair amount at one point but eventually drifted away from it. Fallout 76 won me over after the Wastelanders expansion and I still play regularly. It’s still not a great game, merely decent and enjoyable but I’m biased because I love the Fallout series more than any other. But FF14 holds my love and adoration which is why I’ve been playing it for a year and a half, minus the recent 4 month unwilling break from it. At first I needed to stop for a couple months to help afford a troublesome but worthwhile vet bill, but then a peculiar glitch in the payment website prevented me from paying to resume the subscription and additional retainers. Thankfully both issues have been fixed. I should note that it did take me a bit of time to get used to an RPG MMO where I had no choices, no influence beyond race, appearance and job class. I guess I’ve been spoiled by single player RPGs where I could choose faction or ending in both the main quest and side quests. But aside from a couple examples of my WoL behaving like a total idiot just standing there and letting the bad guy enact his plan such as atop Baelsar’s Wall I’ve learned to love FF14 regardless. I can’t wait to get far enough into Stormblood to meet the Au Ra tribes up on the Steppe.

When I first made my character, I got the random name Angura. I liked the jist but changed the 'u' to an 'o', making it Angora. I didn't realise till later it was canon that the tribes had set names, so I headcanon'd that when he first came to Eorzea from the Far East, it was a mispronunciation borne from his family's accent and not knowing the native script as well. He also had blue skin rather than the 'rust-coloured' skin the tribe description has, so I figured his mother was of a blue-skinned au'ri tribe and married into the Angura. The Azim Steppe was such a great arc for a xaela character. I was hoping there'd be some Angura representation, but I'm guessing since they were such a small tribe and not based in the Steppe itself, it made sense to not have them be around. I like to imagine my character went searching for them during that arc, perhaps finding them, reuniting with long-lost relatives, and gaining some wisdom and spiritual guidance from them.

It's a shame we never see the Dalamiq tribe in game I would have loved to see them, oh well at least I wear their colors proudly. As for the Chaghan tribe has anyone seen any of them cuz the only one I ever seen was girl that was with Curious Gorge.

They weren't a tribe, not really. Just a group of exiles raising hell and attacking people indiscriminately. After they were defeated in the Warrior quest chain they were scattered.

Something about the Dazkar I don't understand: Why do they practically have opposite gender roles from humans? By comparison, I can understand why the Mithra (from FF11) have pretty much those same gender roles, due to their male birth rates being so low that their men are kept sheltered and confined to their home country. The Dazkar's gender roles aren't even part of their race's biology, whereas I can still believe that the Mithra's gender roles are biologically hardwired into their DNA.

Dark red skinned Mierqid here! My girl discovered her early talent for black magic. She said her goodbyes to her brothers and sisters before seeking out other answers to her many questions. Her long trek through the desert soon paid off.

Vampires don't have a direct connection in the overarching lore. However! There are vampire like abilities and blood related magic scattered throughout the game's history!

@EsShinkai02 Жыл бұрын
Closest I'd say are the Night-kin, people who carry the blood of an ancient voidsent named Lilith. The RDM Job Quests go into detail about them and they work fairly similarly to vampires. Also, hi! How are the Kagon these nights? Been forever since Ganbaatar had to leave.

@@EsShinkai02 Thanks, Id forgotten that there were a whole set of people, not just voidsents. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go for a voidsent connection at the time I made her. For some reason I thought I would've had to make her "from the time" that civilization was a thing, but I don't XD "I left in my youth but visit every once in a blue moon. Not much different, a few leaders changed hands or died off. Apparently someone got in a tiff with the Oronir, the sun-crazed brutes fortunately didn't think to challenge us, thank Nhaama..."

Because the Raen don't have tribe structures like the Xaela anymore. The Raen got absorbed into other cultures and essentially lost that part of their heritage.

Someone will have to explain how the Iriq accepted and became surrogate to the Borlaaq. How would another tribe even function on that role alone? That seems a bit too contrived and would be an insult to the Borlaaq taking in their "refuse". There would become issues just taking in males outside the growth of that tribe. And unless they have designated people that fetch Borlaaq orphans, how would they know when they are cast out? Why bother casting out and not kill them? Suikoden III dealth with a village like this and they killed the males born. Why would no one subjegate the Borlaaq as what advantage is there is breeding with them and not inheriting your children. I'd think that would be of value to nomadic people under harsh conditions. How have the Borlaaq been able to maintain at that. And the Buduga...c'mon. They kidnap other males? Why would they go through that effort and warfare and not go after the Borlaaq and take those women to have children? The only time you see such things suggests a certain lifestyle and none that would require cooperation within it. I get they are trying to avoid getting to mature and realistic, but what they made suggests worse or just is nonsensical.

i actually accidentally chose Kharlu as my tribe name thanks to random shuffle and once my friend told me a little bit about the *third largest tribe* i realized my poor boi got kicked out of the tribe at about 18, and traveled to the ARR area shortly after. that knowledge gave me good characterization and gave me fun options for his dad, since i think Genas dad was a Moks. im not sure if Genas dad taught him the signs or not
