gelmorra was the big ancient empire they were hinting at in 1.0 that ended up lost in the move to arr.

Shout out to fish lore stating that the creation magics to even make these creatures will still remain even if the concept isn’t approved for widespread use. Hermes. You wanted to know why that process happened in the first place? The Endsinger. The Endsinger is why that happens. He quite literally caused the death of millions and purposely sabotaged any efforts to stop this all for nothing. Less than nothing cause any point he has is dead on arrival because *the concept and creation magic still exists even if it cannot be used.* FISH LORE. KILLS HERMES’ POINT DEAD ON ARRIVAL.

I think it's also a cultural thing. Japanese culture is more likely to think of nature as a higher authority to humanity and existing in harmony with nature and local spirits, with its give and take, as a more ideal state. Things go well when the spirits are please and bad when they're not. To westerners this seems like a very one sided relationship, but to Japanese people seems more normal and thus no need to really delve into. I personally would love to see Gridania get more development. Elementals aside, it definitely has the least development of any city-state.

It had me laughing my ass off in the long walk towards the end of Endwalker when Hades reminds you about how still nobody knows the true nature of The Twelve. I was like, holy crap that's right, have these literal gods of the game's setting even been MENTIONED since the character creation menu???? XD

Right? When I heard that cutscene it was more like the devs were say. "See all this stuff we've never talked about? Maybe we will, maybe we wont." lmao

Yeah, all other dragons are born of Midgarsormr. They were born of Hydaelyn so they'd be made of her aether, when they die they go back to the lifestream, Midi is from idk space somewhere so their death isn't tied to the aether cycle we're use to. When it comes to the scholars of the source "miss-attributing" light to astral and dark to umbral it's brought up that application & intention shapes the dark/light nature of the elements. A tsunami that destroys a coastline would be an umbral application of water while the rain that brings life to crops would be astral. The whole point of Shadowbringers was to tell us our strict separation and classification of light & dark was far too simple a view point.

Personally I think we should get some background lore on both gridania and garlemald. Both need their histories little more fleshed out. Something for future endeavors I guess

So random question, if dynamis so weak why was it an issue for the ancients and eventually us? Asking for a friend... >.>
@SynodicScribe
@SynodicScribe 8 сағат бұрын
Because that much Dynamis was never used or directed before, as far as the history of FFXIV is concerned. Even harmless water drops can become dangerous when enough are gathered into a tidal wave. And it wasn't being used by just one entity. It was Meteion and all her sisters acting as one unit that created the phenomena we see. There's no evidence that a singular person could ever hope to channel dynamis in such a drastic way. Ultimately, Dynamis was a force that the Ancients knew nothing about and had no time to prepare for. And as such they were ill suited to fight a threat they knew nothing about. But despite the Endsinger's power, she was still defeated by aetherial beings from an aether based world. Even the Twelve, who were theorized to be molded by Dynamis into the forms we see, were still created from and empowered by Aether. Without a collective will to direct it, Dynamis is near powerless do to how listless it is.

I just want a Duskwight character that isn't unnamed, a villain, retconed into a Wildwood, killed off, or made dislikable... It's wild there's like... only one or two in the entire game. Subjectively up to five if you're super generous. Unless you count the Squadron characters, then you can get a dozen or so, but at that point you have to admit we're truly scraping the bottom of the barrel.

The funny thing about blu mages is, the limited jobs, are likely to be the only jobs with stories from here on out. Blu mages will still get plot, and the beast hunters, they too will get plot. When no others do, because they are cast out, they cannot share the plot of others. The limitation will be, in the long run, a strength.

My personal interpretation is that dynamis isn’t a source of energy It’s… entropy And entropy is in essence, a catalyst It’s also enthalpy and Gibbs free energy It’s the catalyst for *all* aetheric reactions No it’s not the only part of the reaction but it is also not absent. A reaction literally cannot happen in chemistry without entropy which leads us to explain that the presence of entropy is permanent and unchanging That and While Zodiark was suppressing the influence of dynamis Notice how he was suppressing it. Not STOPPING it. Therefore, it was always there. It had always existed it was just virtually impossible to detect because who’s measuring the rate of a reaction in any ancient civ? Not very many… The reason i mention reaction rate is that, the only way one would even be able to see entropy existing was if they saw an exponential growth of chemical species interacting. Which is pretty fucking specific. Moving to XIV this connection to entropy is logical. Æther can’t just “react” without something to use as a medium. And no I’m not just talking about magic I mean it literally has to exist as either matter or energy being used in matter to do literally anything. So then how does aether move? Simple, something else is catalyzing its movement. Which is what dynamis is Dynamis is the exponentially increasing movement that allows elements to react. Which itself is what entropy is. Negative entropy doesn’t exist, but negative entropy influence does(to an extent put down the gun chemistry majors). This is why no one detected it, it requires noticing something fundamentally flawed about the universe and then requiring an explanation that can be tangibly measured and/or calculated with solid/definitive proof. This is something that only very few civilizations would be even theoretically capable of producing. Which is why practically no one knew about it. However this doesn’t explain limit breaks… or does it…? You see my interpretation of emotion in XIV is that emotions manifest themselves through æther in a being. There’s a certain feeling that increases the amount of æther or energy being channeled and that in the presence of a lot of it, and with dynamis amplifying it, creates the necessary situation for a limit break. You suddenly have all of this amplified energy in you and at your disposal, this chaos is coming from within you and your teammates, it just needs a target or a focus. This is why limit breaks are so insanely powerful and yet people can still use them without dying. It’s because, there not exactly using the energy of their being, well they are but it’s not just that, they’re using the power of their sheer willpower and desire to win to channel an INSANE amount of ambient and internal aether into one huge action. This is only possible by using the amplifying power of dynamis as, this person wouldn’t be able to produce this amount of æther without either killing themselves or whatever is immediately around them within seconds of attempting the cast. That is if they were able to get that far to begin with. Limit breaks are the product of the amplification of dynamis applied to the destructive and manipulative power and properties of æther. It is the physical manifestation of chaos. When you give it a problem, it makes the problem worse. When you give it something good, it makes it better, when you give it order, it makes chaos, when you give it chaos, it makes even more chaos until it physically can’t without undoing last action. Which explains equilibrium.

And before anyone says “this explanation is incredibly hard to follow” I’m sorry but the theoretical quantum mechanics of a fictional universe will literally always be confusing You have talk about things like The concept of literally nothing existing at all or, how do you measure the rate of change interactions between particles that you can’t see and can largely only measure in percentages. Which will literally aways be confusing

Isn't the WOL already strong enough to wipe out the Elementals? Or are they different enough from the Primals, i.e., there's nothing corporeal about the Elementals, that we won't be able to physically hurt them?
@SynodicScribe
@SynodicScribe 23 сағат бұрын
The elementals aren't just something that can be found and wiped out easily. They're spirits of nature. Even if the elementals of the Twelves Wood were to disappear other elementals would still exist. Very different from Primals.

What's the lore on Gelmorran enchantments coming from? I have all three lore books and want to know! They co-created the Padjal race with hyur to create communication with the elementals, iirc, but what other magical thing(s) have they accomplished?
@SynodicScribe
@SynodicScribe 23 сағат бұрын
Mostly from EEv1. The Gelmorrans became extremely good at enchantments and spell craft in order weave wards that would prevent monsters and Elementals from invading their caves when Gelmorra was in its hay day. That's why the Duskwight Elezen have one of the highest natural magic stats when compared to the other starter races.

Without having had a lot of lore on any of the FF universes or the 1.0 game, I thought Gridania was the youngest of the city-states--they only came together because they were forced to, somewhat recently. It was my starting city and given the prevalence of woodsy elves, I just figured it was still mostly a city-state on paper.

Yeah, none of that shit is happening. It's clear YoshiP isn't big on class fantasy and "living the job" sort of content. We've been asking for this sort of stuff since 1.0, and what was YoshiP's answer? To stop developing job quests entirely, the only bit of lorebuilding and class fantasy we ever got for the jobs.

One of the things about Gridania that influences the amount of story that it gets is just that it is the most stable of the city-states of Eorzea. Things don't really change much there. They are very much built upon ancient traditions, and their relationship with the elementals, and the elementals change at the pace of nature and the Twelveswoods as a whole.

the astral/umbral light/dark split reminds me a lot of the early history of electronics electrical current was discovered decades before we understood the electron's role in mediating it. as a result conventional current, that is, the current direction shown in diagrams flows positive to negative. Though we know now that the electrons actually flow negative to positive. Everything still works, and so decades later we still use conventional current when discussing electronics and refer to current as the movement of "positive charges", even though we know its "wrong"

The series of quests involving Meffrid during the ARR MSQ had such a negative impact on Gridania's reputation that I'm convinced that the writers are too afraid to give the City-state a renewed narrative focus for fear of backlash or lack of interest. Regardless of whether that's true or not, that selfsame lack of focus is only digging a deeper hole for Gridania in the eyes of the player-base. Where Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa have seen city-state wide reform in the quests focused on it, whereas Gridania has stagnated and the story has yet address it's problems (i.e. the rampant xenophobia, the discrimination against Duskwights, and the Elementals just kind of being douchebags.)
