I like some of the Ascians as individuals, but I very much disagree with their response to the Sundering beyond the whole "it's tragic they were forced to become monsters" deal. Choosing to reject something new, even if that new thing seems lesser than what came before, is still a choice. I cannot imagine the torment of living countless lifetimes and trying to connect with people, only to witness then die again and again as you live on. Nevertheless, choosing to become a card-carrying villain or a unsundered supremacist and purposely sowing the seeds of countless structural inequities, divisions, and crimes against sentients on a global scale is still a choice, even if that choice started as a coping mechanism. I bet the Ascians, had they committed to openly and honesty working with the sundered instead of trying to sabotage them after the occasional token test of their "worthiness", could have built up enough aether to rejoin the shards with a bigger world than before (maybe not physically) that had room enough for everyone, or even kept the shards but made everyone as strong as the unsundered while bringing back the sacrificed unsundered WITHOUT NEEDING TO SACRIFICE A POPULATION OR TWO OR REJECT ZODIARK. I mean, the Allagans alone were figuring out ways to bring back the dead albiet imperfectly and were very likely on the cusp of interplanetary travel. The Dotharl (I think that's how it's spelled) had figured out how to track and even modulate how members of their culture reincarnated (no memory crystal required). Tellingly, the two most powerful unsundered are offed due in part to cross-world technological advances. At least two other breakthroughs regarding the soul are made due to the same cross-world exchange of ideas. The kicker is that this exchange was done under the backdrop of total war occuring in both worlds, and carried out only by a handful of people, most of whom (the Archons with the exception of a certain character who has had a bunch of experience by this point) while extremely powerful warriors and prominent political figures, would probably still be considered to be post-doctoral research students in our world given their ages (if you want to know what a hardcore principal investigator or venerated department head would look like, think Master Matoya). Heck, for all their accomplishments, Alisae and Alphinaud are basically just foreign nobles who got their undergraduate degrees from Harvard really early. Yet they still pushed current science forward by several leaps during their time on the First. Imagine if the Ascians had worked with everyone after the Sundering to establish easier cross shard communication. We could have entire colleges talking across worlds. In our interconnected real world, living conditions are generally better than they've ever been. Imagine what fourteen magical worlds could do to improve themselves if they Ascians decided to stop mimicking Venat and worked to connect instead of divide.

I believe the main reason they didn’t go with this plan is because of hydalen and how they view her. They look at her as a parasite that destroyed their world and God, so I don’t think it’s “we wanna destroy the world” as it is more so” your god-parasite killed our god and countless of our friends and families, and destroyed our world, so we shall return the favor and bring our god back”. Not agreeing with the ascians at all but I think their motive is a little more nuanced than some guys trying to destroy the world
@Xialoh
@Xialoh 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think they could bring back their people without destroying the newly created shards. The people in them contain fragments of the original Unsundered people, so there's not really any possibility of compromise. Following that logic, it's hard to say that the rejoinings are entirely maniacal villain levels of evil, considering that the 14 shards only exist as a direct result of basically destroying and repurposing an existing world and its people.

I agree with you, however, weren't the remaining Ascians still considered to be thralls of Zodiark? Despite being very powerful and intelligent, being brainwashed would have been a major issue. That on top of the pain and anguish and hatred they felt...I can only imagine how this logical option would go out the window when they realized the limitations of their newfound peers.

@@TheInterplanetary Emet-Selch's dialogue between quests DOES state they were tempered, though Endwalker kinda conflicts with this, but its suggested that the Primal Enthrallment was added after the fact, when they taught "Summoning/Creation Magicks" to the beast tribes.
@TheInterplanetary
@TheInterplanetary 2 жыл бұрын
@@JShort89 right yes that's right I remember now . So while they were tempered, a full enthrallment was not necessarily happening to them, more like their own hopes, dreams, fears, loathing, and zealotry was carrying them through the ages to complete their mission. After Stormblood I realized that no matter how much they may seem better, you cannot EVER trust someone who has been tempered. Similarly, the Ascians may seem to change their plans throughout the years and even support humanity on occasion, but it will ALWAYS be with their final goal in mind.

There is something that doesn't quite add up with the period after the Sundering but before the 1st Calamity. We know of the 13th and 1st shards that they had entire civilisations, focussed around the primary element of the shard, prior to their own Calamity. So why would the Source be any different?
@Mad-Slick
@Mad-Slick 2 жыл бұрын
Do we know where the Reflections of the Source exist? The Reflections all have stars in their skies but cannot be travelled to by physical means which makes me think different dimensions. But then when the Source was sundered did Hydaelyn create 13 entirely new universes to place the Reflections in?
@rachelkelley5930
@rachelkelley5930 Жыл бұрын
I always thought of them as pocket dimensions, but I may be wrong. It is all the same sky, but if someone were to travel to our star from another they would end up in the source, as evidenced by Midgardsormr and Omega

The way I see it, Hydalen was a paperclip machine, given only the goal of Stop Zodiark, but without any limits The true tragedy of the Sundering was not all the life and possibilities lost, but that of Venat's shitty programming
@jellyfishjig
@jellyfishjig 2 жыл бұрын
It's funny how being dedicated to one ideal above all else can reduce people like that. I mean, most current Primals operate as metaphysical paperclip machines with their tempering. In my opinion, the fact that this sort of dogmatic devotion to a given idealized way of fixing things is the core driver of conflict in FF14 puts it a step above a lot of other "epic" video games, especially as this usually isn't very pedantic in its presentation.

The latest expansion recontextualizes a LOT of what we were led to believe regarding the Sundering, as well as what led to the decision to Sunder the original world. No major spoilers, just letting you know that you only know part of the story (a heavily biased part) if you've only known the history up to Shadowbringers.

We forgetting they planned to sacrifice the new life that sprung after the "end of days". They where about to do some mass genocide before the sundering.

Okay. Wanton isn’t pronounced like that lol. The second syllable has a vowel reduction. So it’s closer to the second vowel sound in the word “caution”.

Personally, this is annoying to listen to in character. Some people might dig it but the highfalutin melodrama really is a shame. Would much rather hear it presented succinctly.
