Another thing that makes a good opener important and useful in a big fight is that the bossfight usually starts with a 10-15 second "free DPS" where the boss either only attacks the tank, only does a tankbuster or showcases their various mechanics one at a time to show you what it can do before rolling into the actual fight itself. Which means that you can pretty much do a clean burst opener right before actual mayhem breaks out. And as you said, with the entire party buffed and various dots and debuffs rolling on the target, that can make for a LOT of damage output right at the start of combat.

Learning opener has been a blessing for me. Initially even as a tank I didn't pay much attention to it. I would save the Infuriate just to unload on Inner release for example but then seeing your WAR video on the opener helped me understand why using it immediately is better. All these small things in general are great to understand

Starting a tank was the only reason I looked for guides and found this guy in the first place. Before that I'd just learn the abilities for classes as I'd play and do my own thing, cause it worked and was fine for me, but I was scared shitless of playing tanks for the first tim ecause I didn't wanna get into a group where I'd mess up and have people shit talk me for it, so I decided to look up a guide, found this guy who made a guide that actually made sense, and I've been watching him when I start a new class ever since.

It also helps that unlike other people who explain rotations and openers the fact that he just does "Ability A > B > C > D > E" and so on instead of the discount guitar hero mess of a rotation example I see some people on KZbin showing from time to time that doesn't even show what ability goes after what actually makes sense and is easy to follow.

Slow and steady wins the race indeed. I once blew the mind of all parties in the Labyrinth of Ancients by saying, Slow down to speed up. Because they kept running into the Atomos fight forcing everyone to be teleported into the A side meaning B and C either had not enough players to even push a button or no one at all. Sometimes stopping to catch your breath or let others catch up will save time. Also I'm really bad at openers but when I tank I try to at least do a count down but seems that the end of a 15 second count down happens at 5 seconds.

This was a treat to hear! I always try to at least do a ready check for the final boss of a dungeon, unless it's clear that everyone knows it and is overgeared for it, but given I've had wipes on some expert dungeons that should otherwise be on lock down for everyone running the roulette, even a bit of preparation can help everyone. I feel more confident to do countdowns even for normal content after watching this. At least as tank or MT, still not sure how well it'd go over as healer or dps. But then, I guess, the worst that could happen is the fight starts before countdown finishes, so not a big deal really.

Jokes aside, I don't see the player base as the main culprit for most of the players not being interested in learning openers, rotations and adapting them to specific mechanics. I would argue that the game itself is not challenging enough before all the savage/ex trials content, leaving all these advanced concepts on a second plan. Although practicing openers in low level content could be extremely beneficial, in the end this won't make any difference if you are about to succeed or wipe in a fight, since the game doesn't push players harder outside the savage/ex territory

/cd 20 A without some form of a countdown, you can MASSIVELY hamper a ninja. Their openers, when accounting for pugs, require 4 casts of Mudra. An instant pull, they will only get 3. And since mudra are the biggest hitters for Ninjas, that's a big loss and that's just the start. Go back to my big rant on E11 and 12S for why it matters so much. Yes, it's high end content. But a HALF A SECOND of leeway screws up my entire rotation. Things get misaligned, I'm not using skills under buffs, etc. Also the part later. People are using party buffs. An attack does 1000 potency? Now it does 1600 potency because you have DRG buffs, AST buffs, DNC buffs, etc. Even a bad opener is improved just by being timed along with everyone else.

All I have to say on this is this: I remember doing one of the crystal tower raids (I think it was the last boss in LotA), and someone used a 15 second countdown before the fight. What followed was one of the smoothest fights of that boss I've experienced. This is as someone who has so far only done Ramuh EX, Tsu's Ballad, and Dancing Plague EX synced. No savage content experience yet. If that's not evidence that openers matter, I don't know what is.

A lot of getting better at dps in this game is practice, having a consistent way to start fights helps get practice for how the player should act in future fights (edit: looking back on this with more experience with the game god I wish any somewhat relevant fight at like 70+ maybe earlier had a timer. As a dancer main who doesn’t want to pull early, not having a countdown means I need to telekinetically guess when the tank will pull or risk screwing up a huge part of my rotation by misaligning my dances)

I understand that is important for high end content like extreme stuff (which I most avoid for not having the patience for the stuff, same as PVP), I don't know how to fully explain but it feels...like I'm being forced to play in a way because it's the "right way" and feels less fun to figure out stuff for yourself and finding a way to play that you enjoy, a rotation that you fell confortable, I have been yelled for "overhealing", I do take care to manage my mana, but someone freaked out because I was keeping the party at full health as a white mage once in a trial, sometimes after a day's work I just want to enjoy my red mage flashy skills, so my take is, if isn't anything overly difficult, it's fine to be slacky with optimal stuff and max/min dmg/cd, you video has great content as always anyway

No reason not to let everyone else practice their rotations though.. i play for a few days coming from another mmo and i have a genuine question. so what happens if the fight takes longer? is there a timer that makes u wipe when u are behind in time? why cant u just fight the boss for longer, are resources running out? what is it? im coming from a mmo where those prinicples only apply when going for a world record speedrun or something, where u have to beat that .x seconds to get the record. its really hard to imagine that this is a requirement just to get a clear. i also hate how the only skillexpression in ff14 seems to be if you get an extra gcd in more than another player... but thats the nature of this combat system i guess. let me know if im wrong about that assumption tho.
@JelisW
@JelisW 3 жыл бұрын
As you go, there will be more DPS checks, and more of them per boss. Basically, you have to unload a minimum amount damage in a specific amount of time, or you will have a full-party wipe. This can range from things like having to take down certain adds before the boss finishes casting a very huge unavoidable arena-wide attack, or straight up hp dmg requirements like with the Odin fight, which, iirc, _must_ be reduced to 50% by the 6min mark or you wipe, or simply "kill the boss before it finishes long-casting this huge ass mega-attack" (again like Odin, who does shin-zantetsuken near the end, and you have about 35 seconds from cast start to kill him or he kills you). In normal dungeons, especially if you're still in ARR, the DPS checks are _very_ forgiving, but they do get tighter in the hard mode ones, and with Savage raids, your margin for error is often tiny. Just yesterday I watched a friend's static wipe three times in a row when they were in the last... I wanna say 10% of the boss' HP bar because there were missing a measly 4k DPS, and the boss hit enrage. 4k can be as simple as a handful of missed GCDs, or taking a couple of hit that you should have been able to avoid, forcing the healer to spend more time than absolutely necessary on healing and therefore contributing less to the DPS.
@JelisW
@JelisW 3 жыл бұрын
Also, while DPS checks in dungeons are generally more forgiving, being efficient with DPS is still vital to the overall success of a run. I dunno if you tank or heal, but as tank, I have about 3 substantive defensive skills (and a couple more minor ones), and these skills give me a defensive boost lasting a mere 10-20s, and are on cooldowns of anywhere between 1.5min (rampart) to a whopping 6min (my invulnerability skill). Healers too, have a limited number of healing skills they can use before they are all either on cooldown (for the oGCDs), or the mana runs out (for the GCDs). We tend to talk as if the tanks and the healers have the bulk of the responsibility for the success of a run, but that's only because we're the most _visible_. When we go down, the speed with which the rest of the team goes down is very obvious. But the truth of the matter is, if the DPS don't pull their weight, there is only so long we can drag the fight on before the tanks and healers run out of skills, at which point we can't keep up with the damage being inflicted, and everyone wipes. DPS is its own form of mitigation.
@WeskAlber
@WeskAlber 3 жыл бұрын
I think you missed a couple bits of the video. I covered the idea of longer fights. People make mistakes, they die to mechanics, sometimes the same mechanics over and over. If, using an opener, you could clear on 7:59 with a tough mechanic at 8:00, a slower clear means people will die, and possibly an entire wipe. Or maybe yes, mana is running out because the healers have to keep saving people from their mistakes. The bigger reason I was suggesting was the fact that your average player can perform better when given an opener. I used my single GCDs as a base example, and then explained that's just the beginning. Many other jobs will lose far more than a single GCD. 12S i lose more than a single GCD. I went over that too. A job like Ninja basically NEEDS an opener to be not a nightmare mess. I opened the video with RDM which the two barely resemble each other. And everyone can benefit from party buffs. Also even some DUNGEON bosses have DPS checks

@@WeskAlber dont get me wrong, im not trying to argue against the importance of an opener. it its important, like in almost every mmo. but having everyone to time everything frame perfet to not do the fight longer and play mechanics is a weak argument in my opinion.
@WeskAlber
@WeskAlber 3 жыл бұрын
It wasn't my only argument though and I never said anything about "frame perfect." But as for that idea, it's true though. The longer a fight goes, the more that can go wrong. This applies to Savage especially. Skipping tough mechanics is a goal not for speedrunning but for safety. We already meet the DPS checks by a ton, but skipping mechanics we don't like/struggle at is great. Back in 3.3, every Akh Morn in Final Steps was a chance to wipe. Every set of orbs, a chance to wipe. People struggled SO MUCH with that mechanic. 4.0, Royal Menagerie was hard for people. People would leave/vote abandon immediately so they wouldn't have to carry 7 dead bodies across the finish line. This is also when Ozma created the Wiping City of Mhach. Every meteor phase was a potential wipe, because people did not know left from right. Ending the fight before the next meteor could save the run 3.5, the only time I ever got 7 comms (not because of my play ability, sadly) was when I carried a group through A11N. Literally every single mechanic, someone would die. Every Hawk Blaster, GA-100, Laser Sword, Whirlwind, someone died. It took us 3-4 tries I believe to kill the boss and even the winning run, half the group died. Including me, because one mechanic is a heal check and I was on DRG. But that was the ONLY death i had. O11N, people NEVER could understand Larboard vs. Starboard. 2-3 people would drop, every run, every time that mech happened. And don't get me started on the flame puddles + flamethrower. There are mechanics, even in the casual content, that massively cause issues. Even if I hope to help the playerbase improve, not everyone is some god gamer. Mistakes will happen, wipes will happen. But every mechanic you skip is a potential run saved Also given how prominent "Skip Soar or Disband" was... most people probably like the idea of faster fights.

This idea is very new to me, so I've got a question or two. If I am a tank, what am I aiming to do. In my head I've currently got the following: 1. Start a 5 or 10 second countdown timer before a boss 2. The moment that timer hits 0 is the moment I'm expecting my first hit (likely ranged) to land, or is that the point I press the button in the knowledge that there is a bit of leeway anyway? I guess I'm not sure how important it is for me to immediately have emnity the moment the countdown finishes, vs. just knowing that I will have emnity by the time the boss performs an action. Does that make sense? The next question is, does that mean I need to be in range of the enemy for my attack to land when the countdown finishes? Lots of questions, but yeah, just trying to figure out how I actually do this. Cheers
@WeskAlber
@WeskAlber 3 жыл бұрын
20 second countdown ideally,. Aim for the fight to begin at exactly 0. Even in Savage, a DPS can take an auto attack and live. If you're using a ranged hit, try to make that ranged hit, well, hit, at "Go" If you are going to be starting with a melee hit, sprint in, and i mean Sprint, not normal walk speed, at like, 1 second. By the time it hits 0, you'll be in range. Look at how we handle E11S, if you ain't one of the people just listening to avoid spoilers.

I still have a long way to go before I’m great but an opener isn’t something the average player should shun at all. I agree with this video but I can already see the casual player base that can’t be asked to do anything getting upset or thinking it’s toxic or elitist even if people aren’t enforcing it.

I just had a debate on reddit about underperformance-toxicity and had to argue that WHM during dungeon content can easily be seen to hit harder than a reasonably performing DPS role, 1) in general because WHM is OP in dungeons and 2) because said DPS role is holding onto their DPS buff cooldowns due to boss coming up. This 2nd idea was foreign to the other poster who massively engaged in a pointless knowledge-flex about fflogs, completely missing the variance in playstyles or goals leading to "results that don't give you an excuse to be toxic." Someone else even came in and asked me why would a DPS not use a DPS buff cooldown. They argued that I'd be losing DPS by 1) holding onto the buff and 2) not using it during AoE trash where the DPS numbers are higher. That was literally a conversation with players peacocking game knowledge on 4-man dungeons. I don't care if I play the "entirety" of a 4-man dungeon at somewhat higher efficiency if I skip practicing openers on every-single-boss fight. Trash mobs are not worth optimizing anything for. As long as I do my basic rotation, and use that buff if I'm sure we're far away from the next boss, I'm good. The average tank does NOT do cooldown on any boss in dungeon, and certainly isn't the kind that's waiting for ready up, or taking feedback to delay start for 15-20 seconds for that buff to come off cooldown. As such, I'm holding it always so I can use it to open on normal bosses correctly so when I run normal tier raids, or extreme trials, I'm able to do with with solid practice behind me because openers start to matter for those fights, but that doesn't mean it should have been the start to practice.

In Relict, I have a full opener for the 3rd boss, but I otherwise use my resources on a rotation. 1st trash pack: Litany + LC 2nd Pack: Dragon Sight + LotD Boss: DS, LC, and LotD 3rd pack: Lit + LC + LotD 4th pack DS + LotD Boss: DS + LC + LotD 5th pack: Lit + LC + LotD 6th pack: DS + LotD 7th pack (single enemy): Nothing Final Boss: Everything, starting the fight with 2 eyes Look how many CDs I get. Practicing openers is good where you can, even in dungeons, but its still good to CD trash. It's why I say the FINAL boss of a dungeon can use a Countdown cuz those tend to benefit from it

@@WeskAlber Monk is the only DPS role I play and I have solid experience behind me from extreme trials and non-savage raids, and I'm also coming back from a 9 month break. My habit is simple: use those cooldowns on first trash pull of dungeon, and first after boss. Beyond that, I need to specifically know that there will be enough time and it's usually not "yes" if it isn't a pull right after a boss fight. I had to look it up but Lance Charge is on the same cooldown as Monk's buffs at 90 seconds. Monk has three buffs that all take part in the opener and synergize so your usage in Matoya's Relict lines up exactly with mine except I am holding all three buffs and using them exactly where you have Lance Charge used: only the first pull after a boss, and the boss fights as well. All other resources (Monk oGCDs) are used basically on cooldown with Tornado Kick (45 seconds) maybe needing a judgement call if it's being used late on a trash pull right before a boss. Elixir Field at 30 seconds is short enough to be an almost no brainer unless it's the finishing hit of an enemy right before a boss. Battle Litany is an interesting one, because while it is on a very long cooldown (180 = 90 +90), because you choose when to activate it and the cooldown runs while the tank is gathering up a few pulls for a single pack. Monk, will hold activating buffs while the tank is still running forward gathering enemies and only when they've settled on a spot to start AoEing down enemies, will they be used. This means the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 7th packs are better for the nature of Battle Litany. Monk would find themselves at a loss for the next fight if they popped buff cooldowns at the start of those same packs. Maybe the 6th pack is OK to use Monk buffs because the 7th enemy takes some time to kill. To my point on the reddit thread: if someone looked at a WHM at some point during parse, and saw that they outdid my Monk DPS for a pull or two then called me trash, that person is toxic. I am always at least executing my AoE rotation as fast as GCD allows, and still usually perform above average without those buffs all the time.

I didn't know people thought this about openers, I'm not even in savage content and I learn them. But put it like this: Even IF openers are "only for savage content"...why wouldn't you learn to use them and build on them, committing them to muscle memory as you go through the game so when savage content hits, you're ready if you want to do it...? Lol

If it wasn't already difficult to get everything right at endgame and even certain points in progression, I would agree 100%. Whenever I think of optimization on that level, my mind can't keep up. I mainly play red mage because of the ease of use and the flair. I didn't even know there was a concrete opener for it, despite reading guides. How does one safely practice openers in a realistic environment without royally messing up mechanics that are prevalent in higher tier activities?
@WeskAlber
@WeskAlber 3 жыл бұрын
The thing is, Openers happen BEFORE any mechanics come out. The first mechanic in most any given fight, is long after your opener has gotten out. From that point it's rotational practice. And your opener can vastly affect your rotation over an entire fight

If you want to practice your opener in a real setting do stone sky and sea first and once you have it down to muscle memory take it into normal raids and once you can do it perfectly in normal raids take it to extreme then savage at a pace you feel comfortable with

I'm not going to lie, it's stuff like this that makes me feel like maybe I don't actually like FF14. This stuff stresses me out immensely. The fact that you gotta do this this precise sequence of actions at a precise time and being even a second off throws you totally off sync is just not anything remotely close to something I would call "fun". I like learning the mechanics of the fights themselves, but as far as the rotations go? I absolutely hate them. They're a means to an end at best. (I should clarify, I do still make the effort. But it does stress me out.)

So you’re telling me that it’s not worth it for me to actually try and get somewhere far in the game 🤔 I’ll leave those fights for people who can actually focus on what they’re doing then 😢😅 seeing as even after watching multiple videos on one dungeon for multiple hours I only managed to remember one single boss attack

Elitist should just PF members so there’s an understanding that they’re looking for Elite players. DF-ing and expecting everyone’s an elite is toxic. Play with elite if you want elite clear but lower expectation when you’re playing with random people. At the end of the day, it’s just a game for a lot of people. I think by the time people try end game contents, they’d have seen opener videos already and have an idea how to do it anyway.

@@dusergayne I've argued with someone who is a lvl80 blm that they shouldn't be spamming fire1 while fire 4 is a thing. Their main point was fire1 has a lower cast time. I understand playing the game however you want to play, but it is really frustrating for the healer and the tank to be spending their resource for an extra minute or two every single pulls, thus making a dungeon an extra 5-10 minutes longer because the average dps is so low

Learning an opener isn't elitist. Even as he mentions in the video, doing your opener improperly is still better than randomly doing your skills. It isn't that hard as a tank to just put up a countdown before the fight so people can get ready, nor is it too much to ask for people to learn a simple opener. Nowhere in this video does he say that everyone needs to be elitist, he's explaining why openers are important, to elite players, and even more so to casual players.
