FFXIV Shadowbringers 5.3 Reactions (Elidibus, Exarch, too many tears)

Matt Stokoe, Elidibus's voice actor, took the character from practically a nothing entity to someone with so much emotional depth that it almost made me feel like I had whiplash. "We will meet again. We *will*. We will..." never ceases to take my stoicism and snap it in two. I'm sure plenty of folks have said this, but 5.3 is the first patch they released after the pandemic hit. To have a story filled to the brim with tragedy and happiness, joy and sorrow, was such an enormous boost in a time when so many of us needed it.

The best thing in this whole patch to me is a subtle thing - it's Y'shtola tossing Thancred a pouch of imbued cartridges. In my mind, this is something he had simply overlooked returning to the Source, even with their armaments replaced for them -- and something she, without prior discussion, started doing for him and that he only learned in that moment as we see it. The real reconciliation between them after their rift in the First over Ryne. Family, healed.

At 4:59:00 it talks about symmetry. But if you noticed, there was symmetry just before that. When you originally arrive in the First, your character starts walking through Lakeland towards the Crystarium, Tomorrow and Tomorrow starts playing, the camera pans up to the Crystal Tower and the Shadowbringers logo appears. At around 4:49:25, your and the Exarch start walking through Lakeland towards the Crystarium, Tomorrow and Tomorrow starts playing, the camera pans up to the Crystal Tower and then fades to black. Symmetry indeed.

I know this is several months old but you hit the nail on the head. Elidibus's mission was fundementally different to that of the other 12. He took it upon himself to step into the hero's shoes when Azem could not. This is made all the more tragic by him taking on the visage of the first WoL to fight us. He is the tragic hero, fallen into despair and resignation. It makes my heart break for him.

Bad take. My friend never had a pet in her life and while she thought seto scene was sad she did not have emotional flood since she couldnt connect to the moment personaly. She does have a cat now. So if her ShB playthrough happened now, that might break her.

Ugggghhh man I weep every time I go through this. There's all the obvious tearjerkers but I feel the most undersaid one is Thancred with Ryne. Solidified as Dadcred, and absolutely -broke- me. So glad to see to see you enjoy all of this.

It was really impressive how they only took like 2 patches to turn Elidibus from being "vague, evilish background character from ARR that barely interacts with you directly" to "depression inducing Dementia victim, more like a computer program left on repeat for eons until it's forgotten why it even does what it does. A rabid dog to be put out of it's own misery."

You reach the end of that attraction when off in the distance you see a newer, flashier ride called Endwalker- which you're gonna want to get in line for! You think you got hit in the feels now!! Oh yeah, 5.3 was a trip and a goddamn half when it first released, especially since it was after an extra few months due to the first wave(s) of the pandemic, meaning we spent a loooong time in 5.2 Patch day 5.3 was one of the best moments I’ve ever had playing this game, all the blind gasps and cheers and tears from the buildup to the trial to saying goodbye to seeing everyone wake up at home, to the first steps towards Endwalker and the finale of a ten-year epic

It might interest you know that in the Rising Stones, before you hand in the final quest (and I think the text remains after too), in Japanese Alisaie actually calls him Raha, ie doing away with the tribal marker entirely, same as Krile. If you get the chance to do so before starting the 5.4 MSQ, you should talk to Raha again and choose "Ask how he fares of late". As a loremonger, I think you'll find what he has to say pretty interesting.

It's still a very emotional scene, even if you know he's not actually dying. There are similar scenes in Endwalker that got me teary eyed even though I knew it would turn out okay in the end. Graha is just really good at bringing out those emotions. No amount of meta narrative awareness can take away from the weight of the emotions behind his words and feelings.

I think partially its coz he has the utmost belief in you and puts his life in your hands on more than one occasion. All the Scions believe in you but his faith is like, unshakeable. And yeah he's at the center of ALOT of emotional moments in ShB.
