FFXIV What Class Should You Play | New Player Guide

I just want to point out to new players, that where the FFXIV community is almost entirely made up of nice and helpful people, there are still some snobby players that hate when you don't play their way. I just hope you don't feel discouraged to play a class or the game as a whole when toxic players treat you like trash. Find some friends or FC mates to guide you or practice in lower dungeons until you're confident in your skill, if need be. But again, a majority of players are willing to help you or be patient with you. It's a pretty good community.

@@reptile97 the game is pretty balanced, play the class you prefer. Worst case scenario, you just switch class. You can play every class on the same character so, dont care too much about it... Especially when leveling

The best tip for any new player is that picking a class at the beginning literally doesn’t matter all that much. At level 15, you unlock the other two city states and can pick up the other starting classes, so you’d be able to swap them out and experiment with them to see which ones you actually enjoy playing. I’d also recommend that you find a main class to play in all three of the major categories (tank, healer, DPS) so that you’ll be able to swap if necessary.

@@SolariGames It is locked to level 50, yes. Make sure Monk is the job you want to get to that level, as it is a pain in the ass to level up between 30 to 50 and switching to another one will be even more time consuming.

@@SolariGames Monk and Dragoon are very technical, which make them quite hard to play for a beginner. I’d actually recommend something like Ninja if you’re starting out, as they are highly capable of doing ridiculous amounts of damage while being fairly easy to play.

I now get the "Floor Tank" thing! I was so busy bringing the pain on the final Dragon boss (Stone Vigil dungeon), I didn't notice the AOE marker underneath my character. Frostbite is a hell of a price to pay for tunnel visioning. 😂

For a new player, I really recommend starting with an Arcanist. 1. You start at Limsa, the city with the most accommodating Layout 2. Arcanist gain access to 2 Job at level 30, Summoner and Scholar and both jobs share levels means you level 2 jobs at the same time 3. Since you have access to both a Healer and a DPS you can switch to whichever suit your needs at the time, like, say, switch to Scholar for an instant queue pop on MSQ dungeons and sweet sweet adventurer in need bonus. 4. You gain access to 2 Shadowbringer Role Quest Chains at the same time, that means more exp and more story contents during your journey through the expansion, and you'd want to eventually do all 4 anyway

Personally? The best experience i've had was with tanks. I started as Glad, and progressed to Limsa, i got Marauder. Both of them are extremely fun, because you're a beefy boy, so you can just pull the mobs and aoe them down and not die. It's hard to go back once you go tank

I recently came from WoW where I played an Arcane Mage. So I went to character creation, saw Conjurer, said "Ok DPS Mage" same as WoW. Got to about level 20 and said, "Weird, my DPS Mage sure has a lot of healing spells but not much DPS...." Got White Mage, said "Ok! Mage now we're talking, bring on the DPS!" Went into a group, people kept calling me a healer, I said "No I'm a mage!" the response was, "Let me guess, you just came from WoW didn't you....."

Welcome to FFXIV and yeah, sounds like you picked healer. If you want the "mage" you'll want black mage that's the damage school of magic in the world of Final Fantasy. That job starts with the class thaumaturge.

By name, Conjurer sounds like a dps class and white mage sounds like a dps class as well, as in almost every rpg anything with mage in the name casts magic damaging spells

For very new people: It’s worth spending a good amount of time for your character creation. Also, pick a voice that doesn’t annoy you since you might hear it a lot during battle. (BUT YOU WILL NEVER hear it in a cutscene)

Bard is a very good recommendation for beginners indeed. You get the safety of ranged combat without the limited mobility that comes as a cost to casters. Also to elaborate on the leveling part, "fastest way" is not a good mentality to have in this game, the MSQ is so important for a reason: this is a story-driven game, it's a Final Fantasy game, so don't skip cutscenes or dialogue or you'll likely regret it later when the story gets good and you don't know who half of these people are. This is very important. Though there IS a NG+ function to replay story missions, you're better off getting the full experience from the start.

I disagree on Bard for a starting class simply because Bard only reaches its full potential in parties. It's not really a "solo" class, and when you're going through the MSQ you're going to be spending quite a lot of time solo. Even with your Chocobo after level 30, you'll still end up having to kite fairly often to survive. I love Bard, but I would not recommend it for first playthrough.

@@GingerPrimeGaming Personally? Arcanist. As it's been mentioned elsewhere, past 30 ARC is levelling two classes at once. The ability to self-heal (not on a cooldown) increases solo survivability, and they still do very good DPS. ARC has always struck me as playing similar to Warlock in WoW (DoTs + pets). I think it's also worth mentioning that the xp from MSQ is very valuable for levelling up DPS classes, since Tanks or Healers can just insta-queue for Duties. You're going to end up doing the MSQ no matter what else you do, so for anyone who intends to level up more than one role, it might be worth it to that person to reserve the xp from MSQ progress for DPS jobs, only.

I only started playing about a week or so ago. Picked Gladiator because of the classic hero-with-sword archetype, and later discovered that I'd made a great choice since the general consensus I've seen indicates that Paladin is the most beginner-friendly job. Now that I'm about level 58, I have to agree - lots of health, a simple three-skill melee combo, a two-skill AoE combo with great range, a single-target ranged attack for mob pulling, two Stun skills (one on global cooldown, the other off-global), and basic 'take less damage/deal more damage' buffs, not to mention a straight-up 'become literally invincible for ten seconds' buff. While I'm a bit hesitant to say this since I haven't gotten to the point where I've unlocked the 'mage' aspect of the vaunted Paladin Rotation yet, it's a very simple job and easy to pick up for new players. Sure, your damage output is kinda paltry as compared to most other classes (I unlocked Samurai, went to fight a mob and my jaw dropped when I mowed it down in about 10 seconds as compared to the 25 or longer it took as a Paladin), but it usually doesn't matter since you can take so much damage and when you're not in a dungeon with other DPSers helping you out, odds are you've got your Chocobo companion with you to pick up the slack. So, in short - if you're a newbie, I recommend starting with Gladiator due to its simplicity. I should also mention that before you go into any sort of dungeon, *make sure you complete all of your Hall of the Novice challenges.* It teaches you everything you need to know about how to play your class's role in co-op PvE content, so if you're not sure about how you should act while in a dungeon, walk up to any NPC named 'The Smith' (you'll find them next to the entrances of the first few dungeons and inside each of the three starting cities' Adventurer Guilds), and play through your challenges. *Do not skip them if you are new to the game.*

A little backstory on Calendar and Deity. It used to matter in 1.0 and is a hold over from 1.0 for the benefit of characters that transferred and kept in as a feature for Role-play purposes. In 1.0 Deity effected a base elemental resistance bonus and Calendar effected a reward system that was never implemented. In 1.0 magic damage and physical damage had elemental alignment and elemental resistance effected how much damage you were resistant to of that type. For example, Ice or Fire damage. The system was re-introduced for Eureka content, however, it doesn't matter which deity you pick because there is no resistance bonus in Eureka outside of that provided by Eureka gear, items and Eureka exclusive mechanics.

When I've done alts, doing leves/fates near the current level while queing up for dungeons really boosts XP (especially with early XP boost items). The highest level dungeon usually gives a lot of XP too :)

Eat food also! Stat increase and 3 percent XP boost every 30 mins, pop 2 and you get an hour of 3 percent XP boost. Orange juice is 7 gil a pop, a stack of 99 was like 700 gil. It's a good way to level, just pop some food and get to grinding 😃

Disclaimer: I agree and support everyone playing at their own speed. Its ok to take your time with msq, even in arr 2.0 and 2.x quests. Tea time cutscene with the sultana is waiting for you whenever you get to it. My comment is this: seeing what classes are available is super easy to find on the internet or in your job tab. Players tend to identify or connect with classes before they even play it. 3 great jobs that entice people though are locked behind the heavensward expansion unlock. Wanting to be a dark knight, astrologian or machinist does drive some players to rush all prior content to get to the class they want. I was like this. I wanted to acknowledge that if you do want to dark knight, astro or machinist, I strongly suggest you start as tank, healer or arcanist (unlock dps and healer at 30). Shorter queue times for all content will help you get through story faster. I would also warn against skipping too many cutscenes. Enjoy the ride even if you are in fast lane.

My very first character I started with dragoon, and I haaated gridania. Normally I love forest locations but to me gridania was kind of bland? I then created a black mage and I liked ul’dah a lot more. Later I created an arcanist to check out limsa lominsa and it is by far my favorite starting town. I can’t wait to get there with my black mage (who I decided to stick with).

I'm also a veteran wow player that lost interest in the game a expansion or two ago. It's not that game i fell in love with and blizzard as a company doesnt really exist anymore ( i mean that was foreseeable), so i've made the jump in ff14 two days ago. I'm really happy so far, many cool stuff like a good transportation system, flexible classes and many more things to explore. Server are buzzing and it's feeling like on launch day in other mmo's. Since im only lvl 10 i can't give an detailed explanation. Just try it and it may be become your new home. :D

@@Heartscream91 hey, i've seen only 2 servers on eu side and both were full to the point of me waiting in queue. I'm still on free trial, so can't say much about end content. I'm still uber low and trying different classes. When you hit lvl 10 and did the class q you can change/try all other classes on same char, so don't overthink it and just jump straight into the adventure. If i find more infos i'll let you know.

When I started I was advised to take Arcanist. You get a pet, DoTs, a little direct damage. When I started, they got heals, that may have changed. The best thing about Arc though is instead of graduating to a new job, they get two: Scholar and Summoner. Better yet, those classes use 1 exp bar so you level both at once.

Fun fact; Rogues are excellent at kiting. My first time fighting Ifrit as a Rogue, our tank died and I pulled agro. I managed to successfully kite Ifrit in a circle until the healer rez'd the tank. I was so proud of that.

For Starting class for leveling and progressing while not having toooo long of a que time, Level a TANK class.. You will not have to wait too long for ques to dungeons, trials or raid stuff. Why do i say this (after playing FFXIV for many years): DPS que times are Awful and in some cases may have you waiting in que for an hour just to progress thru a Main Story Dungeon or Trial quest to move forward. DPS can be leveled up Via the Tower Mechanic quite quickly, but that doesnt unlock until later in the game. Healing Que times are almost instant, but in saying that it takes quite a while to kill mobs as a healer and in the case of White Mage, casting STONE over and over and over and over again just isnt that thrilling. Healing Class however can get leveled up pretty quick thru dungeon leveling and in the Tower Mechanic so this stands to reason that you should level a Healer after your First Class because it is soo much easier and less time consuming and less boring. The only class i would suggest to level besides a Tank would be as the OP said, but at the same time, not many people like the Pet class.. Reason for Arcanist is that it becomes the Scholar and the Summoner classes which Level up at the same time with your Arcanist, so you pretty much have a DPS or Healer, plus a pet to kind of tank for you, so good for leveling and Dungeon/Trails etc.. However, why i dont recommend it as the First class is that the Arcanist can level thru dungeon leveling and the tower mechanic (palace of the Dead etc) pretty easy which gives you 2 different options for leveling the class up. However the Tank will pretty much only have 1 option for you to level up and that is the Tower Mechanic which gets boring after a while, dungeon leveling is out of the question as the que time for a tank is around 10-30mins (depending on Shard) so to fill the gap there is not much.. So as a person who has played for many years and has a couple of characters on different shards (so had to start over again etc before they had content skip) I suggest a Tank be your first class to level, followed by the Arcanist, that way you will have a Tank a Healer and a DPS when you finally finished and all you would have done is leveled up 2 classes..

I played rogue in world of Warcraft, and you saved the best for last. I was thinking of playing a wizard type class or a rogue type, and having a rogue type class that seems to be similar to world of Warcraft makes this game more enticing. I haven’t played a PC game in almost five years, and I am really starting to miss it.

Fun (IMO) is the most important aspect of the jobs themselves, if you don't like it, you won't put in the world to get good with the job. The meta is there to serve us, not the other way around. :)

I just started however I'm leveling everything to 10-15 before making my decision to mainline a class. I just want to learn a bit about each class and profession while picking up a more broad experience of the game. I'm in no rush to hit endgame and I do want to experience a good chunk of concepts before locking in on my main play through.

If you do jump in, just start with the trial and take your time and just note the start of the game is pretty slow, but it does pick up, but many players find it a challenge but the payoff worth it.

Got into the game a few months ago, and I was very frustrated with how the melee DPS targets enemies, so thanks for the legacy movement controls tip. Makes it so much easier to avoid AOE (also sorry for any mystakes, not a native speaker)

Left brain: let's choose an easy to understand class with a simply rotation, then move on to more dynamic ones. Right brain, who definitely chose time battlemage in ff12: BLACK MAGE BLACK MAGE SUMMONER SUMMONER

Archer (Later Bard) is best to start with Not only you're able to move while casting, you're ranged and have a permanent speed boost on top of basic sprint ability so you move fast without the mount. For first playthrough it's the best starter - and once you ding max lvl, you can do whatever you want so who cares :D

I would suggest Arcanist for new players , you get to level at same time a healer and a dps later on, do the solo part as dps and when need to change to group content to advance the main scenario quest go for healer for fast queue times, also carbuncle is best boy

I appreciate this video. I started playing back in January, and having now leveled a most of the classes to 50 I can say that I've seen a few "which class to play" videos which talk about how the classes play, but include things new players won't see for a while. Examples being, at level 51 BLM doesn't have Ley Lines or Enochian, at 50 MNK doesn't have a chakra gauge, etc. Your video goes over how the classes feel in general terms, rather than specifics and I think it works well that way.

Starting the Trial today! I have FF15 (yet to finish) and I just finished FF7 Remake, let just say I fell in love! I know each FF is different in its own right, but I can’t wait to see what FF14 has in store. So far I’m loving the character creator, although I’m stuck on which class to pick, hence why I’m here. Cracking video Brian, I'll be really interested in the Class Comparison videos. Just started having a dabble again with a couple of friends new to the game and went with Marauder to Warrior just because I love the aesthetic and Tank style. But I'm already seeing noticeable changes at Lv 10, nothing bad just surprising (would never have expected Overpower to be a no cost/no cooldown ability!), I'm looking forward to re-learning the class.

I'm sure you will, but like many who come over from WOW there is an adjustment that people call "the wall" but for those who make it over that hurdle, they sing it's praises. Start with the free trial and don't quit until you've unlocked flying in the base zones (level 50 MSQ - story quests) the game from the start gates everything behind the story.

I feel like a lot got left out when describing the classes. You described things as “feels good to play” but did not expand on why they feel good. What “feels good” can vary from person to person. You mention aesthetic which is cool and all, but doesn’t really explain the play style of classes. Like what if someone enjoys the martial arts aesthetic but when they play pugilist they find out that 3 stacks of greased lightning is too fast for them. What if people like big explosions but then find out that casting is standing around, unmoving, for a bit and thaumaturges have to keep in mind of the balance of fire and ice. Like you put in a lot of effort I can tell and it’s a nice video, but it’s kinda lacks any information of what playing a class is like.

You might enjoy a more specific guide per character class, because I find that going into hyper detail in a class overview doesn't have a level of benefit for the viewer that I wish it had, and for more details then can then drill down into a specific class/job. If there were less jobs then it would make since to put that into one of these videos with a summery of all then individually layout the details (ala Outriders) but thanks for the feedback. :)

Not checking if anyone else caught this (so sorry it this is a repeat) but to open the rouge class you have to have completed your level 10 class quest NOT just reach lvl 10. Found that out the hard way so spreading the knowledge 🙃

To change your job you have to clear the level 10 class quest, so level helps, but that is the real milestone.

@@silvermax6392 Ever play FFXI Online? used to have to level a base class untill half of max level and all advanced classes had their own quest chains to complete before you could touch them, gated behind level requiemens too. I loved my DRG then but most didnt like it since it was hard to ability chain with (pretty much need a DRK-which used to be a squishy dps, Samurai, or Beastmaster-nobody wanted because you shared xp with a monster they temp tamed that would randomly turn against the group). God that game was unforgiving in so many ways, yet oddly i miss those nights of trying to build a lvling group of weird non-meta setups....

Arcanist, Conjurer, Archer or Marauder imo are the best beginner classes. Arcanist allows you to gain two jobs in one and allows you to heal and DPS. Conjurer is an easy peasy reactive healer. Bard is ranged physical meaning no cast times or positionals. Warrior is an easy self sufficient Tank. Then when you get to the other expac jobs both Machinist and Red Mage are good beginner jobs too. Least friendly jobs for beginners are Dark Knight, Ninja, Black Mage and Astrologian.
