I'll admit Mr Slate that I wasn't keen on how things sounded but your explanation of how to utilise these tools is fantastic which is obviously the most important part! Thank you very much!

Great video! Been playing with the FG-Bomber on a couple of master tracks and it added EXACTLY what I was needing without having to use my usual 3 to 4 complex plugins. All of your plugins, especially the VMR modules, have made my work flow so much smoother. Plus I have better mixes because I'm able to get things where I want them in half the time! Keep up the awesome work!

I run a minimalist approach as far as only owning and using a select group of plugins, just as you would use the hardware in a big studio. I have all of the Slate gear and use it. Now I use the FG-Bomber with great results. If it didn't help I wouldn't use it. Fact is it works and helps me squeeze that little bit of extra juice from the digital tracks.

Please, please, please in these tutorials, once you have set the Bomber how you like it for each instrument and for the overall mix, after you play the short sections with the Bomber set as you like it, then bypass the Bomber and play that and then switch it back in and play that so we can hear the difference and how much it is improving the tracks or mix - thanks!

Very helpful video. Can you create one that explains in depth (like this video) what the Present, Fat, and Tight settings do? I know, I know, "use your ears," but it's extremely helpful to know what to be listening for with these type of settings. Thanks!

Thank you, Steven. Makes it a lot clearer. Thing i notice is how in the rack, Revival always seems pegged even in your mixes. I'm not sure why or what it's actually showing me.
@djtiii9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Gervasi Revival is pretty awesome, especially the thickness. To me, it sounds like it does a great job at exciting the specific fundamentals/harmonics that exist in the sound itself rather than just boosting/exciting a given range. The end result is basically no mud or harshness, but it is pretty easy to overdue as it can give a compressed sounding element and sound a bit flat. I've found revival before VCC, rounds that out a bit if I'm liking the tone at the revival setting and do not want to change it.
@MikeGervasi9 жыл бұрын
+djtiii Do you find Revival pegs in the red for you as well? I've put Trimmer in front of it to reduce signal but I'm not sure it's needed.
@djtiii9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Gervasi I gain stage a mix around -20dB RMS (TV standard levels) and do not run into this problem. If it does peg into the red though, I do not think it changes how the plugin reacts very much. Slate Plugins have a sort of limiting effect when in the red rather than adding a ton of distortion. With that said VCC cranked super hard in red with full drive adds some crazy harmonic distortion. Tried it on a 1kHz sine wave while experimenting and it actually turned it into a strangely tonal hum. In the end, trust your ears.
@owenthomas63379 жыл бұрын
+Mike Gervasi Whearas, what I noticed, was the the Virtual Channel was being absolutely slammed, both for the drum bus, and the mixbus - which is something I also try to avoid with gain staging! The virtual channel is largely pretty subtle, but if its slammed all the way, all the time, it becomes rather less than subtle - nevermind having it being permanently slammed in both sub-groups and the master.
@djtiii9 жыл бұрын
+Owen Thomas I was referring mostly to his question about Revival specifically being in the red, which doesn't takes quite a bit to actually distort. VCC in red is a totally different story.

Can you do a video where you use it in a not so good mix? Not a bare bones mix, but one that isn't so close to a quality product, so we can how it works in early mixing stages. That would be the most helpful in my opinion

I noticed on the virtual channel/master channel his meters are spiking: is that generally okay with these plugins? I just got them and have been usually not letting them just max on the red but it seems like in a lot of his videos he does.

Listen with your ears, never your eyes. You can crank thos Slate Plugins. Most of the time you get nice harmonics in each component

Using this thing on my Vocals ;)
@kirkbolas49854 жыл бұрын
Very nice. The mix in the beginning...the drums seemed a bit washed out and placed a bit too forward in the mix. The vocals seemed muffled and almost buried under the drums. The Bomber indeed is subtle, yet it corrected what I heard as deficiencies in the overall mix and created what I think would be an essentially finished mix.

The only small amount of criticism I can muster is.. That you always use tracks that are already incredibly well recorded and sound amazing without any tweaking. Well to my ears anyways. I'd like to see / hear you use your plug-ins on something recorded not so well.. Bad room.. not the greatest mics / preamps. etc. Maybe you've already done this and I just haven't seen that one.. I don't know.. Just my .002 cents.

I guess I'd prefer to hear this plug in action without all the other processing involved; without the FET reduction, EQ, verb, and Revival, ( which, BTW, seemed to be pegged pretty hot, no?) ... just so we could hear what this plug does on its own.I could be wrong, but doesn't this just sound like a compression/saturation kind of vibe? In a way, it sounds similar to an 1176 plug in "British" mode ( all buttons in)... IMHO of course.

Was the song used in this tutorial made just for the purpose of this video or is there a real song behind it? :D
@renejrhodes887 жыл бұрын
... no offense but the change was not subtle to me... more over the top. By the time you get the Glue and Compression from Distortion you wanted on a Mix it sounds drastically different. Bomber made the Drums Pump (Don't know if that was the Intention) which can be avoided with right compression, the Vocals lost the little Dynamics they had and the Mix started to sound distorted, which also can be avoided. I get it, it's an Ad and for people to get it you go a bit over the top. But I don't see why we need to keep exaggerating stuff. Just an opinion.

None of these companies will show you turds that need to be polished vigorously. Talent, dynamics, and timing are everything. Sure you can make badly played songs sound "sonically pleasing" it's like taking an ugly girl and putting her on the cover of sports illustrated with the same photographer and crew as the actual model. All this plugin does is make songs sound squashed without being actually squashed. I myself love it, but it wont make the punk band down the street have the dynamics of a symphony orchestra. I have mixed professional tunes, famous multi tracks from scratch and i get pretty close to the original. It's all about the talent in the room. Or in the box in this case.
