A thought, but what if this was the Richard in Camelot, and because he wasn't able to be his own servant, he was linked to the actual Richard, I wouldn't put it past Richard to allow this to happen. He is almost nothing like Richard, and is very clearly strong, strong enough to face the Lion King Round Table that even Gawain comments that it would likely require 2 or 3 of them to be sacrificed to take him down.
