Pretty neat! Love the underwater bit as it gives a better idea of how they work. As I'm Somerset based I tend to use the wild willow withies for my projects. Keep it up.

Cheers 👍🏼 aye, willow withies are an amazing material. Thanks for the feedback

The bait bag must be anchored to the middle bottom of the willow pot. Perhaps trap makers could add a wood bar across trap bottom. Bait bag quickly tucks under bar.

Like it, will make the suggestion, cheers 👍🏼

I like your site. I’ve seen you legally catch, and keep mackerel, hake, pollack, crab, lobster. What other spices can you legally land? Do you have individual species quotas, or is it a fixed tonnage with a free for all to fill it? Curious minds want to know. Cheers
@F20_forager9 ай бұрын
It's to do with the type of license entitlement. This is then registered against the commercial fishing boat (has to match the boat KW and Tonnage). Can read more here: www.gov.uk/guidance/do-i-need-a-fishing-vessel-licence

The species list and catch limits are variable, too. Take this year, for example. Pollock is no take due to low stock levels
@MarkLuddy9 ай бұрын
@@F20_forager as the pollack quota is closed to you, does your daily mackerel catch allowance increase? What is your daily mackerel allowance? Also, am I the only one who thinks those wicker traps, might catch better, if fished on there side? Oak lathes for protection may be required.

I’m also starting to experiment with pots mines from a kayak so on a much smaller scale but it’s all learning and I’m loving the videos

Cheers. Good skills launching pots from a kayak. Nice and sustainable 👍🏼

Brilliant video! I've been researching my local Anglesey Ynys Mon lobster pot, I'm about to start experimenting making them soon, jig is made, willow ready. Will keep an eye out for more videos. Great work.

Thank you 👍🏼 the lads making these pots were telling me that traditionally different areas of the coast have different styles of pots, partly due to the different types of grounds they were fished on. Would be interesting to see the Anglesey pots 👍🏼 Hope the making goes well, cheers

Just well made what's the price of one

I was discussing this with the guys who made them. They are quite labour intensive, but they seem to be getting faster at it. The pots I'm using here were as a trial, and I've not had to pay for them. Will be using them and seeing what I think and giving feedback. If you're looking for a price, it's probably best to give Aaron a shout on his Instagram; treetosea_withypots 👍🏼

I'd be terrified to fish those. If you lose a wire mesh pot it's a money thing. If I lost one of these I would suffer emotional damage.
@F20_forager9 ай бұрын
😂😂 brilliant comment.. Have to say tho, a modern pot, when lost continues to fish on its own, becoming a death pot. Waste. Whereas one of these will break down much faster if lost.. ;)

Northeast region United States lobster pots must have a biodegradable escape hatch. They are not too dependable. The old school half round lathe pots converted to a coffee table are beautiful.
@F20_forager9 ай бұрын
Yeh, a good idea on the escape hatch. What's the half round lathe pots ? Had a Google but didn't pop up 👍🏼

@F20_forager Look up 1970s New England lobster pots. Very nice looking but not as nice as those willow traps.

Very tough fishery. You had to leave your gear unattended to soak. Sometimes you would lose gear to draggers , ships wheels and other traffic. There has been high seas gun fire when someone messes with another man's gear.
