We ALL do this Dance of Life ....and after awhile the pain does leave when a loved one dies....BUT...for me personally the sadness is always hanging around just enough to remind me of the loss.....I lift a Glass of Champagne to 16 going on 17 Liesl....Cheers Linda!

Actually, to a navy man, it makes total sense. On a ship, yelling for people is entirely impractical. There's too wide a space and too much going on. The whistle is both loud and easily distinguished, so the commands are easily understood.

I love this scene. Maria isn't intimidated by the Captain and demands to be treated with respect. It annoys him in the moment, but her inner fire and her unwillingness to take any BS from him is precisely what saves him and his family and makes him fall in love with her. The part where she whistles at him and he turns around and she looks at him like, "Yeah, you don't like it when it's done to you, huh?" makes me laugh every time, and it's one of my favorite exchanges between them. Also, watching this scene knowing that she apparently started falling for him the first time he blew the whistle is equally hilarious, given how she just stands there with her mouth open XD.

Lol... I once saw it worded something like when he whistled for the first time, he stood out as a truly unique and unusual MAN to her... When she sat on the pinecone, and very obviously covered the kids, SHE stood out as a truly unique and unusual woman to HIM. Also, this whole thing is just wonderful. Been watching it over and over recently...

There are so many scenes in Sound of Music between Maria and Captain von Trapp that are comically endearing and tenderly romantic. This is one of them and another is Maria's first night at dinner when after she sat on the pine cone. His expressions at Maria's gentle sarcastic speech to the children was comical . I will never tire of watching this movie and this is the umpteenth times. Rest in peace dear Christopher Plummer. You were so wonderfully romantic and an attractive Captain von Trapp.

This is surely my favourite film of all time. I must have seen this movie at least 200 times & never get tired of watching it. I first saw it when my mum took me to see it when it first came out in 1965, when I was at boarding school. I even played truant from school just so that I could go & see it again & again. Even at the now age of 61, it still brings me to tears, which is unusual for most men.

She did a fabulous job in Mary Poppins, but IIRC that was the year that My Fair Lady came out on film. Julie had played the female lead, Eliza Dolittle, on Broadway, but Audrey Hepburn was cast as Eliza in the film. Some people have theorized that her Oscar win for Mary Poppins was at least partially out of sympathy for the loss of the role of Eliza.

Enjoyed this movie when I was very young. Never thought that I faced the same scene when I became a widower in my 40s with 3 young children and was looking at a new relationship. It was so difficult to get a woman into a family with children. Near impossible and it takes a lot of effort to make it work. In one of the scenario I nearly became Brady's bunch re-run.

She may have been counting b/c she saw the large space between Kurt and Marta and realized one child was missing. The Mother Abbess had previously told her that there were seven children. ("Do you like children?" "Well yes . . . but SEVEN!!!")The whistle and noise of the footsteps, though, could have been a shock to her system.

***** YES it is true. Maria was really the stern one.Google it......she didn't love the father but she did love the children. She was not as sweet as Julie Andrews in this movie but she was said to be very nice at times, however, she had a bad temper during some occasions. Here's just ONE of the many links where you'll find the same info. www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/winter/von-trapps.html

***** But she was. Anyway, I can't tell you what to believe. I'm merely stating the facts. I think you find that hard to believe because of the way Christopher Plummer portrayed him in this movie. And he did a fantastic job in this role. Anyhow even though the movie was not 100% accurate, when compared to the real story, it is still a great and memorable movie. One of the best regardless.

Maria von trap was stern yes. She has even said in interwes that she is sad the way her husband has been portraited in this movie he was not like that. He was a kind loving father. The children was not that open to them getting married they loved her as a governess but dident want a new mother so as you can see they made the story fit hollywood. Maria could not do annything about it she had nothing to say about it couse sje sold all rights to it to the first person that made a movie and he gave her a bad deal. But at that point Maria was desperate for money they where about to loose everything there is a documentary here on youtube about it i just dont remember the name.

As much as I love *The Sound of Music* (and I do), Captain Von Trapp is *WAY* too strict! He hits one of them with a book just because she was reading it. I know he said that he wants them to march around and be drilled in their studies, but I see nothing wrong with reading a book. Besides, it could have been one of the children's study books that he wants them drilled in. Note: from what I understand, the real Von Trapp family said that it was *MARIA* who was the strict one, not their father. I can only assume that they switched it for the film version to not make Julie Andrews a hateful character as Maria.
