The map didn't lie. Because it's purpose isn't to give scale it is a navigation map that is very useful in ours purpose. Sadly you can't make a good map of the globe on a flat rectangular price of paper. Because even if you adjust for size then the overall shapes are a bit distorted.

What’s the point of comparing High Latitude Countries each other? That’s what this video is about and make totally no sense. The whole point of Mercator Projection is comparing the countries near the Equator with those near the poles. It’s totally ridiculous comparing Japan with Europe, why not comparing Central Americans countries with Europe? What about South America? Paraguay is bigger than the Japan you can fit the UK, Germany and Italy in Venezuela. Disliking this video!!!
