No need to fear the IRS. Despite their reputation, they're actually quite reasonable. But the field agents you'll deal with at first have no authority to work anything out and don't even know the tax law that well. The trick is to get to a revenue agent with authority to do something. It may take an appeal or two, but when you get the right level you can reach a reasonable accommodation. I always have. -- CPA

He has back taxes from a job years ago up to $35,000 ? Where is he going to get this information from to file ? I would not be concerned about mileage reports at this late date. No one forgets the IRS. Something isn't quite right. It would have been best with a baby if she took $5,000 to keep as an emergency fund for her security . $1,000 is way too small an amount. Not with a baby, unmarried, and he has been screwing around with the IRS ! That gives him $12,000 to pay taxes immediately. Then work on the rest.

So I'm not from the States, but why is not paying taxes legal, but not filing taxes illegal? Here (NL) I believe it's the other way around... But of course, we have pre-filing, so they just enter what they know and if you do not add to that, that is what they will go with. Filing incorrectly is illegal, but you are not always required to file.
@smithersrob6 жыл бұрын
it's not legal, it's just not a criminal offense, they can pursue a civil case against you for not filing. Not paying a known tax debt is a criminal offense carrying criminal penalties up to and including imprisonment if the debt is large enough.
