FIAT 500 1.2 Cam belt / timing belt Replacement

This video runs through a cambelt and water pump replacement on a Fiat with a 1.2L engine.
This video is not intended to be a tutorial, but instead for insight about the job itself and why we do it.
What does a cam belt do?
The main role of a cam belt or timing belt is to control the timing of your vehicle’s internal combustion engines. It controls the timing and sequence of when the valves to the cylinders open and close. To do that, it makes sure that the the crankshaft and the camshaft rotate in sync.

I'm a bit late to this video but huge thanks for posting this. I have a 2014 Ford Ka which is the same engine but I have a head gasket to replace. I'm in construction and not a meachanic but have a healthy interest in mechanics. I'm going slowly bit by bit but I'm determined to get it done and this has helped massively.....thanks, Gaz.

@@thorobredcars1975 If it's just the head gasket I want to change, is it the same process? Can the engine mount and top cam cover just come off or does the whole cambelt need access with the wheel off? Gaz.

​@@thorobredcars1975 I think I have the same engine. Is this engine actually a Non-Interference-Engine? I've read many people saying it is not because of vvt, or changes to the engine, other just don’t know. thanks

This engine is very much similar to the 1,4 Fire Evo used in Brazilian versions of Fiat 500.

How do you remove the electrical parts on the right of the airbox? You skipped over that part

You can leave the ECU Connect . There is four 10m nuts holding the bracket on . Remove the nuts & slide the mount/ bracket away from engine .

@@thorobredcars1975 Thanks very much. This job is kicking my arse. One last question. The tensioner came loose when started and the cam isn’t in time with crank anymore so having to time the cam. Does the locking tool only fit in when it’s at tdc or isn’t more complicated than that?

I just did the work with fixing tool on camshaft but markers on the valveshaft pulley. Fixing both may be complicate for mounting the new cambelt when there is not a little gap for moving the pulley. So, all worked well without demounting the valve housing.

@@stukyu No real issue, If it was your own car & you knew it was running well etc. But,, you would only be presuming its set up right. If its a customers car & you are being paid to do it correctly the only way to be sure is to lock cam & crank. Often we do find it a tooth out, but no noticeable lack of power ? These engines are actually quite resilient.

I think “book time” is 2.5 hours . We generally say 3 hours is needed if you are taking time to clean surfaces & making other components better along the way .

It looks quite a task on a small engine.Agree with changing water pump auxillary belt and tensioner whilst changing belt.It would be daft not to whilst all stripped down.

Yes you’re right. we always recommend replacing as a kit and do so in Five year intervals. The good news is it engines are non-interference so can survive a failure but it’s always good practice to keep on top of it .

But 50yrs ago you didn't habe to remove the motor fixing to change a timing belt. Additional nowadays you didn't have enough space to work on the engine. I just did the work on this engine - what the video here shows is the minor part of it. But it was done in around 2:30h.
