Fiat 500 instrument cluster removal

Explains how to remove a Fiat 500 instrument cluster display from the dash in the event of needing any repairs. I charged battery without disconnecting battery status sensor from negative terminal and LCD display was blown. Who knew, ridiculous! I posted to Cartronix who replaced the display for £250 and turned around the same day, very good service.

Thanks for the video. Very useful. I will have to remove the speedo on my daughters 500 as the display is showing flashing oil and abs lights when indicating right. Same colour as yours ! The repair looks like its going to cost around £300.

Hi, I paid Cartronix £250 but that was a while ago. My display was completely gone but not sure about your issue, have you checked all external bulbs as the displays sometimes do odd things when you have a faulty or blown bulb. Check brake lights, fog lights, reverse, headlamps, etc. I am sure I had some strange issues with warnings and found a bulb gone.

@@MLTOPAYNE thanks for the tip. I asked my daughter who lives on her own to check all the lights and she says they are ok. I was was concerned about the oil and asked her to check this urgently, again ok. At night she says the other warning lights are very dim. I will see her at half term as she is a teacher and check everything myself. 👍

Did you have to disconnect the battery to do this job? Or is it safe to dismantle?

Good question, the honest answer is I cannot remember but as far as I recall I just left the ignition turned off. The only thing electrical is unplugging the display which is not going to cause any issues so I don’t think I disconnected the battery.

@@MLTOPAYNE thanks for the reply Martin, have to do a swap for the printed white kmph to mph/kmph circular strip for an import, it comes with the warning light panel around the outside so means dismantling it from the central digital display and replacing rather than just fixing it over the original. So this video has been really helpful to save some money, thank you!

Why took mine out after it played up and used a 12v battery mains charger. Mine is start stop has a heavy duty battery that alone £200+ Had thought about changing with LCD speedo from 2014 but that requires reprograming the mileage too not major challenge but does require ecu recoder

Pleasure, you can send for repair but I have seen a site which sells the display if you fancy changing it yourself. I would have done it but found out after it was already repaired.

Is it safe to use jump leads without disconnecting anything?

If it’s just a jump lead from another car battery then I guess it must be ok. The issue with charger is the stop start battery needs the use of a smart charger, this is what damages the instrument display if the battery sensor is connected. The battery sensor can be unplugged really easily so if your not sure just disconnect it then plug it back in, but if just a 12V supply via jump lead it should be fine.

Cartronix in Waterlooville. They did it the same day, if your happy to have a go yourself I later found someone selling the parts and has a video showing how to replace the parts.

The parts seem to be available from www.akspeedo.com and they have a video showing how the parts are replaced, about £69. I can’t confirm if any good as I used Cartronix.
