Wow, that engine sound takes me back. Drove a 1970 850 Spider that was orange. Lot's of mechanical problems, but so simple to work on. Took 20 seconds to reach 60 mph, but sounded like a race car while it was doing it!

I have one in my garage right now. 1970 Fiat 850 Sport Spider. I completely restored it in 2000 to give to my daughter. After twenty years of not talking to me, I will get it running and may sell it. I purchased it in 1983 and did the first restoration of it. I need to rebuild the carburetor for it before I can get it running. It has a Weber 30 DICA and they are not available anymore. I suppose that I will also need to go thru the brakes again.

I drove a '69 850 spider for years - just a fantastic little car!! could reach 93 mph eventually, but the handling let me drive it at very close to that speed on all kinds of twisty roads - fantastic gas mileage, never less than 36mpg Mods: cannon headers with a tiny muffler, carb rejetted to Abarth specs, lowered transverse leaf spring up front, lowered coils in rear, Koni adjustable shocks on full the only car I've ever owned that girls would ask me to take them for rides - right out of the blue!! I removed the convertible top and popped on a aftermarket hard top when necessary - and it could carry 800 lbs of people with the top off!!

Now that I'm in my 70th year, I'll be looking to sell my S-class (550) and find another gold 850 - the S550 is nice (2012) but I still miss my S600 V12 too much... I owned a blue 850 coupe before purchasing a gold Spider - and also drove a '61 1100 red cabriolet for several years - it never failed to get admiring horn honks + yells and waves in traffic..! many conversations with older folks at gas stations drove an X1/9 4-speed for a few years, which was GREAT fun!! it came stock with Campagnolo mags that you could easily lift with your little finger - superb lightweight wheels however, my stock black 5-speed. 78 Datsun 280Z with the Japanese headlight covers never failed to get many questions and offers for many years - despite needing floor pans, a gentleman offered me $4400 for it one day and I let it go apart from my first car - a '57 Chevy Belair coupe in two-tone green, and an '86 Honda Prelude with full Jackson Racing suspension kit, mags and a few Basani mufflers - it went just over 200,000 miles without ever having the head off! it only needed a clutch at 276,000 miles (the dealership refused to believe it was the original..) and a water pump a black '95 Maxima that's it in a nutshell...

forgot to state here that this particular engine really needs to be thoroughly warmed up before driving - the oil channels are fairly restrictive, so you're going to want to get the engine temp up all the way if you want to avoid having to take the head off.. I also ran mine with a lovely Nardi steering wheel... a superb look

Had an 850 that saved my life by cornering an unexpected T at a fairly good speed. I thought myself and the girl were going into the swamp. But the Spider just went around the corner. The new Michelin tires probably helped.

Oh brings back memories.i owned a blue 1970 Fiat Spider, my favorite car to this day! Could fill up on less than $5. The only problem I had was the gas pedal stripped.

Love it! Had a butterscotch colored 1969 one in the late 70s for high school. Miss it, looks better in Paris than Dallas, but everything looks better in Paris :)

I had a 69 850 and love it. It was a mechanical nightmare at times, but had under a 6 gallon tank and got over 50mpg and was a blast to drive.

One of these in the same colour red was my first car. The fan used to fall off and you realised by hearing the water start to boil in the radiator. I fixed it when I discovered nyloc nuts. Great little car
