I've ran into these fiber glass repairs on box gutters before, does seem like a pretty good quick repair. I rebuild, reline box gutters pretty much exclusively these days, of course i do all kinds of roofing tho, i just tend to take the kind of jobs i enjoy doing these days. I have one customer who works for the historical society, and they pay me to hand fabricate decorative corbels, sometimes they're made of wood, but sometimes they're made of metal, i fabricate outta whatever the original were made of. I'm getting ready to start about 185 foot rebuild/reline Yankee box gutter. One side is pretty much completely gone, so that's a total rebuild, rafter tails, fall boards, cap boards, pretty much remove what's left of the entire run of gutter, and completely redo it. After 34 years roofing i can honestly say that i still enjoy the hell outta the metal work i get to do. Just something about creating things with your hands, that you know for a fact will be there, doing it's job, long after I'm dead and gone. Leave my mark on the world i suppose. One thing i hate tho is i can't find any young people who wanna learn to do this stuff, all the tricks of the trade I've picked up will just die with me i guess. I've taught quite a few guys how to solder and even taught a few of them how to line a box gutter, the whole left side, right side thing, but i have so much more i could teach the right young man, but I'm only gonna work maybe another 12 years then that's probably when I'll hang up my pouch. I'm sure I'll always do a little stuff here and there, but it's starting to be too much on my body, all the rigging i have to do to be able to do the kinda work i do, the ladders , it's all just starting to be too much on my old body, especially my damn back haha.

We are getting ready to do this around our 1891 castle. We have looked at all the options and this is exactly what we came up with as well. Our videos right now are concentrating on the slate roof and brick work. Box gutters are next and we are getting the materials together. Thanks for the tips. I will be using them.

@@craftsmanshomesllc8219 It is a handful. We have done a lot of research and have done quite a bit of slate repair already if you aren't sure about it. Slate roofs are wonderful.

The outlet you put in is for an aluminum k style gutter,use a 3"piece of smooth round galvanized downspout and cut 3/4" cuts on one end and bend them for a flange use gutter sealant and they can be cut to any length to get threw box gutter,they also sell a silicone coating that will last 20 yrs called Enduris,have you ever heard of a wire brush to prep the rusty metal,throw away the sandpaoe8r and as far as replacing the metal in the box gutters you can use rezibond sheet metal from a roofing supply house properly installed and soldered with 2 coats of paint will last 40 yrs copper for that old house would be not worth the exspense.

@@eastside0434 if you're working with ResiBond galvanized sheet metal, just make the outlet tube to whatever size and length you need. That's how I make mine when I reline box gutters, I also use steel pop rivets and solder the seams, including my outlet tubes. Make sure you have the proper flux to clean the seams to be soldered. Use Ruby fluid for copper, but if you're going with galvanized such as ResiBond, you'll wanna get some Stay Clean flux, and grab a few acid swabs while you're at it. Most importantly get a decent soldering iron, I have a Sievert soldering iron, mine runs on propane and cost me quite a bit, it was close to $700 brand new, but I make more than that in a single day doing this stuff for a living, so money well spent.

Was checking out your fiberglass gutter patch job. Think you are spot on with it. The only thing I would have done differently would be to use a rivet gun instead of screws to avoid cutting screws afterwards. Looks great tho. Great job man!

Good suggestion, I am going to do that , prolly faster too. I still have some more to do on this house, other “emergencies” took priority.

How long since you did this fiberglass resin repair ? How is it holding up ? I may try this on mom's house next week. Her main A frame roof at the attic floor levels leaks from where the downspouts go through the box gutters both sides of 100 yr old house in WV. I put tar on it 10 yrs ago at down spout junction. I believe metal , wood and the EPDM rubber box all bad in that section. I may make extended down spout like you showed, pop rivet in metal, rebuild fascia, soffit,, and fiberglass the entire pan all the way into spout overlap

I made this repair last fall before it got cold. It is holding up well. I think it would do well for years, nit unlike a fiberglass boat. I just want to buy some time so I can make other repairs or progress on the house and circle back later and do an extensive repair including the eave and soffit. If you want to make this more of a permanent repair, consider a coat of epoxy paint to protect from UV rays. Also by adding paint (epoxy) your not only adding another layer, but also making any pin holes visible.

How long would you expect a hack job to last.?

If you paint gelcoat over the glass it will last longer.

Did you not make any attempt to scrape off any of the moss and mildew and rust? You're foundation of the fiber glass is only as good as it's foundation!!!!
@craftsmanshomesllc82192 жыл бұрын
Yes, eliminating all the debris is important to get a good bond to the substrate. Keep in mind that for me, this is a temporary solution to stop the water. In some spaces I will have to completely remove the entire section because all the framing has rot. Thanks for your input Robert
