Here I laminate the inside of the little Haines Hunters transom.
Fully rebuilding fiberglass boats takes a lot of hours in labour, it’s worth it if you love it or love the boat your restoring.

Thermolite and coosa board are both polyurethane foams as far as I am aware. Both contain fiberglass in the foam. They are both considerably weaker in sheer and compression than a good pvc foam at say h80 density. They are also considerably heavier with the fiberglass strands in the matrix. I am not really sure why people use these two boards as I have found them to be heavier and far more expensive than pvc foam. Certainly when you do bulkheads and definitely for decks I would definitely not use coosa or thermolite as they are far softer and very expensive. I believe full composite boat builders like Ezytopper at enlightened boats use 100 % diab pvc foam for the lightest and toughest composite before you get to exotics like carbon. SAN foams are superior to your pvc foams as far as compression is concerned so they are marginally better suited to hull surfaces than pvc but considerably more expensive. I have been building composite boats since 1996 and I have used thermolite and coosa several times. I far prefer diab foams for a superior blend of weight, price and performance. I am not associated in any way with diab I just research my building materials a great deal and for mine Diab wins hands down. I have used it in many different applications for many years and found nothing to match it. I am not sure why thermolite/ coosa put fiberglass filaments into the foam matrix that arent really attached to anything. It certainly doesnt bring the properties of a cheap urethane foam up to the standard of a good pvc or san foam it just adds weight. The 8 metre powercat video I posted on youtube is 100% h80 25mm diab foam called divynicell. The properties of this foam allow for a much simpler lighter build than would otherwise be the case. The boat runs with twin 30hp motors at 19.8 knots lightship. Cheers

Hello from the Chicagoland USA. I assume Thermolite is similar to what we call Coosa Board. You’re doing a great job. Can’t wait to see more. Cheers.

Thanks mate, really appreciate it 👍. Video will be coming, I do have the footage, unfortunately I am dealing with some health issues at the moment 😢. I was truly hoping that the boat would be done by now, I have lost about 6 months so far. Anyway, looking forward so much to getting back into my life🤞 Cheers and I do really appreciate your encouraging comments 👍

how many layers of chopped strand and double bias did you end up doing tieing the transom back into the hull?
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I did 3 layers of 600 choppy and 3 layers of 450 double bias - alternating of course. That ended up at about 7mm thick which is 4mm thicker than the original lamination which was just choppy. It’s only a small boat and there is some knees etc to still be laminated to the transom.

Looking to do a transom on a 146r Haines Hunter .I was wondering what is the advantage of using double bias /chopped mat sandwich rather than just using solely double bias.I’m new to fibreglassing and just trying to find out as much info as possible
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman Жыл бұрын
Hi again mate. Go the Haines 😁 great boats 👌 Double bias is way stronger that chopp mat but you need chopped mat between each double bias to bond it properly to the previous lamination. Same if your using woven in your lamination, chop between each lamination. Cheers

Did you start and finish the layup with chopped mat ,which would mean 7 layers of glass .I’ve read that it’s best to have a final layer of chopped Matt as it gives a better finish when painting it.Well done on doing the layup in one go ,I reckon I could struggle here in Brisbane with the heat
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman Жыл бұрын
@@kevinwood4974 Hi mate, Yep, it’s best to start and finish layup with chopped, also best not to do the layup in one go. In saying not in one go it is still best to get it done while the last layup is tacky and you can achieve a chemical bond. Cheers 🍻
@kevinwood4974
@kevinwood4974 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your help . How many layers could you safely do in one go and how long would you wait before doing more layers.I was hoping to do the layup in one day but that might be wishful thinking?. I’m going to use unwaxed resin and add styrene wax solution on last layer .I’m not sure if you can use waxed resin straight after using unwaxed resin or do you have to wait for unwaxed resin to tack up slightly Sorry for all the questions (could be more) ,just trying to get my head around the process before jumping off the deep end

How much did you spend on thermo lite? And where did you get it from?
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate. Bought a few sheets because stringers, floor, bulkheads, casting decks are all going composite. I bought the Thermolite from CCA Composites and it was about $330.00 per sheet plus freight. Cheers
