Good progress guys. I think it was a good idea to build the right way up. Apart from the turning over dramas you have been able to build the cabin and deck etc making for a much more varied (and hopefully enjoyable) work day. Also, I think it is dangerous to walk or crawl around an upturned hull. This way you can hang to fibre and work on the ground more.
@Nena84734Ай бұрын
OMG, it looks so good, damn, that hull is going to be so strong! Speaking of RAN III, I feel like I have a learning disability when it comes to that magic tape and the machine he goes around it with, like, I watched it from the beginning and I couldn’t understand WTF is going on? Anyway, super job on that fiberglass layup, I was worried about the midship and all those beautiful curves. I’ve never heard of Myrdal wood, enjoyed the forrest immensely, that was gorgeous. But that table….oh man, that table, like she said, looks good even without a finish, it’s going to be so beautiful, can’t wait to see that! Obie can melt your heart with those eyes of his, such a sweet boy!

What may help with the gravity thing is add some glue powder to the epoxy mix and make a slurry , , wrap the cloth around a dowel and wet the hull first not the cloth . Work from the keel upwards , just a damp roller sleeve will pull the resin thru the cloth ,same with second layer and squeegee out smooth and peel ply , I'm an older traditional boat builder from NZ and have used this method multiple times .( you may need an extra hand on the end of the dowel ie., 3 people )

@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River - an old Dutch saying: the best helmsmen are on shore - that's what I am, on shore :) So as to RAN, between you and me, while they're doing a great job, I felt they could have re-used the frame-structure on which they built the hull. If they had put it surrogate keel down, then they could have cut out the panels on the interior side and built their boat's interior into that. It also might have helped them decide where to put cable ducts (in most boats/yachts an after thought. In another channel, we see two architects rebuilding their sailing boat in Sardinia too. From a methodological point of view, a bit more analysis might prevent issues or difficult decisions later on. But without that experience, the risk is "analysis paralysis". Their problem is lack of experience - they're smart and work out out, but they are from another educational background in the labour division than what they are doing. That makes it interesting to watch, at one level. What would interest me, is a bit more of the thought processes - rather than a live explanation of what I see, how they got to the decision. In the case of RAN, this gets some, but minimal attention. And same story with the architects. A British shipwright rebuilding a famous wooden boat gave it more attention, but in technical design decisions was very frugal. That said, an organic process, is fine too. It's merely a choice. If you watch other channels, as you have mentioned a few in the past couple videos (comments), you might have seen one couple that had their new sailing boat made in Iefke's fatherland, in aluminium, and this was an all CAD-CAM process, where all the analysis (architecture) and design (technical, realisation) decisions had been made in the CAD domain with virtualisation potential. In that boat's case, e.g. all the cabling for the diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, all instrumentation and control cabling, etc., had been planted into the design in the CAD domain too. Understand me correctly, I am not saying it needs to be CAD-CAM. A whiteboard and a few doodles may work great in a more organic approach to building. And explaining why the things are going the way they do. And pencil on paper or marker on whiteboard is orders of magnitude faster than drawing in a CAD system that wants mm precision.

I just love Iefke's hat. I have got so little hair left that i don't need to worry too much about getting resin in my hair and besides i am not sure leopard print would really suit me. Like you and lots of your other viewer's i watch a number of boat building channels including RAN and its great to see all of the differing ways a boat can be built. None are right or wrong they just suit the builders, their budgets and experience. Besides all the well known ones a channel that i find really interesting because it is such a different approach is Dan Lee Boatbuilding. It has hardly anything in common with your build but still fascinating. When you were discussing the table design you talked about book matching the wood. I assume that you were considering ripping the plank in half and then joining the two halves as a matched pair. I guess that you decided the work and risk in doing it were not worth it particularly as you had something stunning already. Great video as always.
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_RiverАй бұрын
Hahah yes she loves the hat also! The good old op shop anti epoxy hat! Been around for a while now, have to be fashionable while boat building! Thanks Tim, wise words indeed! Cheers
@stevepople9366Ай бұрын
Speaking from successful experience you put epoxy filler directly over GREEN epoxy glass and this means you don't need to use peel ply or sand the glass. You just sand the filler. You only need peel ply at the "edge" ie the last of several "drops" of glass at days end. Plan ahead and you can save a lot of agony. I did this with a 38 foot launch glass over carvel plank ( with glued splines ). Try it on a test panel and see the ease of work. Good wishes.

I need an answer from an expert.....please put on your thinking cap. I'm restoring a boat with white oak (18' Penn Yan Runabout). As you know red oak is too porous with very long pores. For added strength I'm making some curved laminates using very expensive epoxy resin. Wouldn't red oak be a better application as the resin will better fill the voids???? I dig your video btw..
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River14 күн бұрын
Oh interesting! We haven’t used red oak so not very familiar with it.. epoxy will fill the voids to a point bit of those voids are throughout the wood then it may not be that strong. But I think it’ll be fine, laminating frames is sooooo strong!
@onenewworldmonkey11 күн бұрын
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Thanks for the reply. No one uses red oak for boats. There are videos showing how to tell the difference. Basically, red oak has pores that runs the whole length whereas white oak pores are intermittent (and the reason they are used for boats). My point is they didn't have epoxy back then. If the point of epoxy is to be absorbed into the pores (ie, vacuum bags, slow cure, low moisture, clean first with alcohol) then it makes more sense to use red oak. I've never heard anyone mention this.

Hi guys with fibreglass on inside and outside how will the timber breathe will it rot with moisture trapped between glass ?
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_RiverАй бұрын
A good question, the timber does not breathe anymore, that’s sort of the objective. And where it cannot breathe it cannot build up moisture so then fingers crossed it cannot rot! Well that’s the loose theory haha but basically we are encapsulating the wood and preserving/hiding it from the elements
@svlamancha9877Ай бұрын
