While I found your summary of the novel entertaining and generally correct, your description of the inhabitants of Galt's Gulch as a bunch of hippies is beyond bizarre. In other words, it makes no sense and contradicts the facts presented in the novel. These were ideological capitalists who paid each other in gold for every service rendered and all property in their community was privately owned. Plus there was no collective decision making and even democracy itself was despised. The correct term to describe this kind of society is AnCap.

There's people talking about a decline of the west and how Rand predicted it. I'm curious: what do they mean by decline, what are they actually talking about? I'm aware the world is not perfect or even great by any means, and neither are the western countries we (probably) live in, but I don't see how things have ever been "better" if we want to speak in a general and qualitative way, though I'm not a fan of this manner of speaking. Just the fact that I can read and write, and in more than one language, without being noble or even wealthy, is something that wasn't possible for most people even 70 or 80 years ago. If the west is declining what is it declining from? When has the life of the average man ever been easier and relatively full of opportunities?

It's declining philosophically which will translate into decline in material terms. But the effect is not immediate.

I think the west is declining because many people don’t feel the way you do-most people aren’t in search of all of the knowledge that is available to them. The western mind is closing.

The West is not declining. Crime rates have been at an all time low since the 1990s when compared to the decades previously, literacy is consistently rising and the younger generations are becoming more intelligent on average. One can argue that America is regressing with its recent Supreme Court decisions in the last few years, but by almost every metric, the West has improved immensely in the last one hundred years.

@@richyrich6099 Like I said, it is declining philosophically, which is the foundation of all those good things that you mentioned. So who knows when we will see all the effects.

@@AssaultSpeedwhat does it mean to decline philosophically? Is it that people adhear mlre to science nowadays eather than going to their holy books for answers? morally, I would say we are more compassionate than a hundred years ago (from my subjective view). Do we have to read nietzsche, kirkegaard or marcus aurelius to be a more sophisticated society? if so, i believe more people are reading them than ever. This is entirely my opinion, so it could be wrong. Also the internet tend to show the extreme negative of people, so if you're getting the belief of people not being philosophycal from random vids on the net, then that should be a factor to consider. Sorry for putting so many questions in one comment.

So what if all the businesses shut down tomorrow? That would be a devaluing of assets if they were not to reopen. Essentially Scenario a) the government would go to middle managers give them loans to restart the businesses and confiscate the assets of the business leaders who closed down the old businesses for political pressures. Scenario B) Quid pro quo bargin with them. Subsidise for contributions. The old fashioned way to embezzle.

I think that people who are against rand should try to live in a third world country where effort and vision are overshadowed by monetary interests and envy

Try to live in a third world country, such as one where government subsidies are inherently inadequate due to the corruption of wealthy elites making the poor majorities beholden to them? Sounds like a Randian paradise to me.

Have to resoectfully disagree. Nobody has as clear a vision as AynRand. If you are in any way a Statist then you will not like her vision and that is OK. But surely you can see the sharp decline in the West both economically and morally is a result of the Statist mindset not the objectivist mindset?

@@joepaluka9031 Honestly, no I cannot. First of all, morals are SUBJECTIVE....not objective. So I am at a loss in understanding your subjective opinion that there has been a "sharp decline in the West both economically and morally". Also, I have no idea what a Statist is. Do you mean Stalinist? Like a Communist? Since I'm going for honesty here, I consider myself a Democratic Solialist Progressive fucking punk rocker. I don't want to live anywhere near Ayn Rand's "Utopia"...so I also disagree with your opinion that "Nobody has as clear a vision as Ayn Rand". Ayn Rand was a total C U Next Tuesday.

I've typed this out before on this channel, and will do so again: Rand was a loathsome human being, a callow thinker, and a hack writer. Her "philosophy" (essentially a rationalization of selfishness and greed) hardly deserves to be called such.

This is a really bad summary of Atlas and you read stuff into it that isn't there. That's the problem with most people who review Rand they bring their pre conceived notions into a book that are not there.

For the most part, I thought the plot was one of the highlights of the book - some the logistics are questionable, but it's certainly an original idea (I literally just re-read it, and the downside is the plot only has small windows to properly get going between all the ceaseless monologuing). On the surface, the plot is best enjoyed as a piece of pulp mystery adventure.
